Features. Audio, Video connections

Weakness:

Have to turn off 3D YC filter when playing Panasonic VCR or picture flicks dark every minute or two.

I like this TV. If you can find any left (I think they are discontinued) grab it. It'll probably be way cheaper than a new set. At the time of my purchase Nov.'99 I had read all the reviews here about it and came to the decision to buy it. I got it at Circuit city and about six months later it had dropped almost a hundred bucks. Oh well, that's progress for you. Anyway, if you haven't found anything yet, consider this one. I've seen the Sony Vegas at around the same price I paid for mine. The reviews about the Vega scared me away from it after reading about having to have it (programmed? or tuned...? What's that all about?) These reviewers must be extreme audio/videophiles! I did nothing to this set except adjust the picture and brightness to my liking and tada, I'm happy. I had a 27" Hitachi before which I had for almost ten years and was so happy with it because of the surround sound. I've never heard a TV with such a good sound all by itself. I haven't had a chance to compare it to a new Sony with 15 watt speakers though. It's all so loud in these stores. How can anybody make any side by side comparisons? I think sound is just as important as video even if you aren't gonna use it all the time. That was what I liked about my now fading Hitachi. It had speaker outputs in the back and a switch,if you wanted to use the TV speakers or these external ones. It also had AV jacks for a receiver which I also had connected. So if I wanted or didn't want to I could leave the receiver off and still enjoy great sound. I can do this also with this TV except for the external speakers. They can only be used in conjunction with the surround receiver. I can however use the TV's two speakers as a center channel speaker as an option which is OK but I still use a separate one that comes with my stereo. My dad has found a short cut to all of that which is to cut the speaker wires that go to the cheap speakers and wire it directly to a big huge 60 watt speaker. The sound is awesome. Even in mono since he's waiting to get an HDTV. The picture on this set is very very good. As far as competing with the Sony Vega for a flat picture, there's no need to pay so much more if in less than 5-10 years we'll all be starting to consider HDTV's. My dad's tv is only a 19" and he believes the picture is the best he's even seen (if he can see it that is). This T V is in my 10' X 10' bedroom for now until I finish remodeling and I'm very close to it. I enjoyed the Olympics very much. My next purchase will be a Dolby Digital receiver to deliver it's promised improvement in sound. I had talked to someone at Fry's and they seem to concur that even now, with ATT's digital cable, you won't get digital sound necessarily from it. That kind of blows since I don't own a DVD player but might. I usually just watch cable or premium channels through the box. The sound from the TV itself is OK I guess. I had bought a 27" Phillips surround at Sears but was forced to return it since I wasn't happy with the picture or sound. It had many, many connections as well as features. I wish they could mel some of these TV's together to get the best. What would be great also is if the consumer could order their features a la carte. That would be great! Perhaps like computers since we are entering the digital TV revolution!!? Well, that's it. If you can find anymore of these TV's for under $800 go for it. It should last until the HDTV's start competing for your hard earned dollar.

Strength:

fits in my bedroom

Weakness:

picture quality

I have a Hitachi 36" and 27" in the living room and upstairs bedroom, respectively, and the 32" Panasonic superflat in the MBR. All hooked up to DSS. The Panasonic doesn't have enough contrast even in a dimly lit room, only barely adequate with all lights out at night. Picture is lame, on certain scenes exceeding its resolution capabilities it just makes a blur like a white cloud in front of the area. I can walk around the wall into the LR and see the Hitachi with clear details the SF can't do. Also, of course, everything that is wrong with the SF is right on the Hitachi 36UX59B.
Of all tube televisions I have seen the Panasonic is the worst, only off brands from China might be this bad. I am going to take a loss, sell it for cheap and get a good Hitachi 32UX59B.
