Strength:

Picture, Menu, Remote, # of inputs (COMPONENT!!)

Weakness:

Pricey, POOR sound

I just wanted to add to a caution to potential buyers and/or users of this set.

Although I am very happy with it, I now know where sony cut corners between this model and the FV16's/etc - in the SOUND - and I'm not just talking about the speaker quality or the Watts, but in the sound board itself.

I currently have my VCRs, DVD, game, cable, etc all piped through the Wega - I use its SOUND OUT to supply my old analog stereo.

There is a CONSTANT white noise (hiss) produced by the WEGA not matter what source I'm playing. This has a tendency to block out some background sound in movies and take away from the overall emmersion of the experience. Too bad really.

So, with this set, it's best to go out and buy yourself a SONY receiver (so you can use the same remote) and switch all your sources through it.

Anyone else notice differences in audio between this and the higher end 27" models??

Strength:

Picture quality!! Is there anything else you use your TV for?

Weakness:

Although it dosen't seem to distort the image directly on...the tube has a strange circle pattern in the glass. It's on all the Wega models (view off access with light coming at an angle)

Love the set!!

I only use my television for the video section...have never even hooked up the RF section. The component resolution in the 16x9 mode on a letterbox DVD is simply incredible!! Almost brings tears to my eyes it is so beautiful, properly tweaked with video essentials disk that is! I previously owned a Mitsubishi 27 and loved that set to, but the Wega rules over that relic. Had a problem with the set within the first week, but after it was repaired...awesome!

I would highly recommend this set anyone looking for a top-notch picture for a relativly small price to pay for a smaller television (27" seems small these days)

Strength:

Picture on DVD's and video games

Weakness:

Grainy tv quality and the 16:9 mode has to be set every time

Using the 16:9 wide mode, the picture quality on DVD's is simply amazing. The first time I hooked up my DVD player to the TV via component video and watched a DVD, my jaws literally dropped at the clarity and crispness of the picture. I also hooked up my DC via S-video and the picture is excellent, too.
There are 2 problems I have w/ the TV, though. First off, the TV quality is very grainy. Second, the 16:9 mode has to be set every time I want to use it. A third (but not really) is the speakers: they suck, but I have my TV hooked up to a reciever, so that's no problem.
For those of you who gripe about the remote, it's not that bad and if you can spare $100 and have multiple components, get the sony RM-AV2100 universal remote. It's pretty nice considering it's $100 (go to pricescan.com...the thing actually retails for about $180 or so). Anyways, here's my system FYI

TV: Sony KV-27FS12
DVD: Sony DVP-S530D
VCR: Sony SLV-M11HF
Reciever: Denon AVR-3300
VDO Games: Sega DC & Sony PS
Speakers:
Center: Klipsch KSC-C1
Front L/R: Klipsch Quintets
Rear L/R (bipole): Same

Weakness:

weight; personally, if this TV came in black as opposed to silver, I'd be a little more satisfied with the appearance, but that is a minor complaint.

I didn't need a new TV, as I already have a Samsung 25" which surprisingly performed well in my HT system. Yet in the back of my mind, I was constantly aware that I hadn't completely optimized my viewing experience. There's no greater frustration than to know that there is something better out there than what you have... AND it's attainable.

So I ended all of my frustrations in one fell swoop by purchasing the Sony Wega. From storefront to homefront I found myself woofing and barking, satisfied on some preternatural level that I finally bought what I wanted at an unbelievable price. The gratification was revisited and confirmed when I hooked up the DVD, popped in "Men of Honor" and lost myself in the viewing experience.

What more can I say -- I am in heaven. The picture quality is impeccable. I continue to marvel at the way that you can see the texture of a person's skin, or even the crystalline refraction on a bead of sweat. Absolutely amazing.

My only caveat is to bring a friend or a handtruck when you go to purchase the TV. Me, I purchased a handtruck along the way. I knew that parking in my neighborhood on a Saturday would be atrocious. Three blocks I would have had to carry the TV before I even reached my building. Needless to say, I wasn't particularly anxious for that type of workout.

Strength:

Picture Quality, Flat Screen, Component Video, 16x9 Enhanced mode

Weakness:

Sound, but I haave a home theater setup so I've never really used it. Weight, the first set that I bought started turning itself off if there were a lot of light colors on the screen and I had to take it back (down a flight of stairs), no problems with the second set

This is a great television and I haven't had any regrets about the price that I payed for it. At first I bought a 27" Trinitron and had it for a couple weeks before it started acting up so when I went to take it back I saw the Wega. I debated on whether the extra $200 was worth it and in the end I took the plunge...and I'm glad that I did. The flat screen really makes a difference and the picture quality is outstanding! My satalite picture using the S-Video connection is crystal clear. Watching DVD's using component video with the 16x9 Enhanced mode really shows what this set can do. I don't think that you'll find a better 27" television at this time. If your wondering if the extra money for the wega is worth it then here's my advice: Just do it, you'll be glad that you did!

Strength:

Incredible in most every respect
Even the users manual is commendable

Weakness:

103 lbs...
Don't try moving this thing by yourself
Only one S video input

Picked up my unit at $399.00, after MSN $200.00 rebate.
Incredible price when you consider that my old Trinitron
sold for $729.00 way back when.

As stated above, this set is absolutely incredible. The
16:9 enhanced mode gives you an image quality that resembles
progressive scan. To my knowledge this is the only 27" set
that offers this feature. It is important to note that this
feature functions by "condensing" the sets scan lines into
the screen area between the black bars created by the letterbox process on most DVD tittles. although the resulting image is incredibly detailed, some distortion, a
slightly "squished" look, results.

One more problem, if you wish to connect an SVHS tape unit as well as a DVD player, you will need to use your DVD players component output. As although this set offers four
different video source connections, only one gives you an
S video input. The standard composite connection would be an option also of course, but the resulting picture quality is not the best your DVD player has to offer.

The above mentioned items aside, I have to confess, I've
had my set for three weeks and to this day with each DVD I display on this TV, I'm put in a state of disbelief by
the incredible picture this Sony Wega produces.

Strength:

Great picture from any angle. Great price. Perfect if you're just getting into DVD.

Weakness:

A Little heavy

Can't complain so far. I'd vote for a remote with digital cable control capability (can't access guide/menu/etc. features) but a Sony AV-2100 universal fixed this for me no problem.

I'd also recommend the Sony stand -- reasonable price and realitively small footprint.

Strength:

Realistic picture. As close to true life image as you can get from a standard 27" set.

Weakness:

scan lines scan lines scan lines scan lines

As I shopped for a television, I made the following observation after watching numerous sets and actually bringing 3 different high end 27" sets home. The WEGA does not have the richest color. The WEGA has more obvious scan lines than any made. (This is actually the reason I was hesitant to even try one.) However, when properly set up it has the most realistic picture of any set made. One reason the scan lines show up on the WEGA more than other sets is simply this--it has perfect focus. If other sets were not slightly blurred, they would show up there as well. Now, if you prefer deep colors, the Tau may be more your speed. If you hate scan lines look at the Samsung. But, if you want a picture that makes a rock look like a rock, and grass look like grass, the WEGA is the only one to buy. When set up right the WEGA will reveal detail unlike anything on the market. For example, it will not only accurately reveal the true color of the newscasters suit, but you can actually tell whether it is cotton, wool, or polyester. No kidding.

Great picture quality, 16:9 mode, flat screen, lots of inputs, WEGA!

Weakness:

sound, who really uses them any way?

rcwilley was having thier president day sale and was selling this for 599, they match ultimate electronics price of 569, I was looking at getting a Sony Trintron 32", but after finding out this was wega capable of 16:9 with Component video input, I had to get it.. I do miss a few inches, but its well worth the sacarfice of this crisp sharp picture!

definatlly worth the purchase!
