This post may upset some of you that own this TV. I was seriously considering this set and then the Zenith/Inteq IQB27FW hit the stores. The Zenith is not only cosmetically like the Wega, the performance is as good, if not better. Really. The Wega couldn't display the same shade of black across the entire screen during end credits. The Zenith has no trouble with this. The Zenith's comb filter is also better than Sony. Even with DVD I can't see the difference between S-video and composite. Zenith's warm (movie) mode also looks closer to 6500K than Sony. It also has component video and I paid $600. I'm not posting this to bash Sony. I happen to own some very nice ES A/V gear. Rather, I want people who are considering this set to take a hard look at Zenith's flat-screen TV. Before the Zenith was released I would have given the Wega a four star value rating. Yes, it is pricey for a 27", but until recently it had no real competition (I know, my "old" TV is a Panasonic SuperFlat). The Wega IS a great TV, but now it is not the only game in town.

Strength:

Flat Screen, Great TV Sound, Beautiful Colors

Weakness:

Geometry Problems

Besides the geometry issues...the TV is great
It is better than the Toshiba dn Zenith in my opinion...when fed a high quality signal.
I returned the TV after one night of use because SONY is releasing the new generation of WEGAs this Summer
I would be foolish to buy the current line-up and deal with the geometry issues when there is a possiblility that the newer generation units may have improvements
Check out SONY's web site for their press release

Strength:

BEAUTIFUL picture: crystal clear and tight focus edge-to-edge. Nice size. Multibrand remote. Amount of S-Link and A/V connections on rear. Silver casing.

Weakness:

Second S-Video jack in hidden panel on front of TV (should be around back IMHO)

After saving for a LONG time, I decided to take the plunge and get this bad boy. $800 well spent in my opinion.

The good: Viewing DVD's and playing Sega Dreamcast has never been as good as it now. Using an all S-Video hook-up, the picture quality is nothing short of breathtaking! The colors are extremely vibrant yet rather natural and the quality of the images are actually BETTER than my 17" Hitachi monitor - no lie!

The bad: If you are not running a satellite feed through it, don't bother. Cable looks like the crap it is. Luckily, I'm getting a DISH installed this weekend so my overall viewing pleasure WILL go up!

Overall, I have no complaint about the quality of the TV (no geometry problems whatsoever). Great product that compliments the rest of my Sony equipment (STR-DA50ES receiver, DVD-S330 DVD player, and CDP-CX300 changer). You will NOT regret putting out the money for this masterpiece.

Strength:

Unsurpassed video quality, PIP, Looks great as a piece of furniture. Price for quality of picture.

Weakness:

Big, heavy. Factory picture/sound settings needed sone tweeking. Any set would have though as personal tastes alway vary.

I just picked up my new 27FV15 yesterday and I have to say that I love it! When I first propossed the purchase of this new set to my wife she thought I was nuts but once I convinced her to visit our local video dealer to actually look at the set she was sold. The picture quality cannot be beat. It is without a doubt the best picture this side of HDTV. The colors are rich and vibrant and the picture at times appears 3D. I was also surprised by the quality audio that can be produced by the factory speakers. I actually found myself watching MTV yesterday just so I could hear the stunning musical sounds coming from my set. I was also pleased with the outstanding images produced when playing my gaming system. The flat picture seems to make the games seem like you are playing in an arcade. I looked at the Panasonic super-flat as well before I purchased my SONY but I really don't see that there is any comparison between the two. The only thing better about the Panasonic is the price and I don't think a couple hundred dollars should justify viewing an inferior picture for the next five years before I buy a new set. As far as price goes, I don't agree that the SONY is too expensive when you consider that the only thing that touches it is HDTV (now that's expensive!) My advice would be to go ahead and skip the trip to the Pocanos this year and shell out the additional cash for the Wega. You won't be sorry. Just make sure ahead of time that you have adequate space for this set as the cabinet is large. I fit it in just barely. Also don't try and move this thing yourself. It is pretty heavy when compared to other models. I did find that my wife and I were able to handle it togther with not too much trouble.

P.S. Don't be afraid to haggle with the salesperson at the retailer over price. The one you see on the tag is not necessarily the one you have to pay. I was able to get this set for $699. Not bad eh?

Picture...that's about it

Weakness:

Let's see...price!!!, geometric distortions, color, black level, NO COMPONENT VIDEO

I had very high hopes for this TV. I read all the great reviews and decided to purchase this one over the Toshiba CZ27V51 which was less then half the Wega's price ($350!). The Wega's picture right out of the box was horrible. After a few days of breaking it in, I calibrated it using the Video Essentials DVD. The set has obvious geometric distortion. The black level is also way too bright. For $800, simple things like this should not be a problem. Despite all the shortcomings, the set delivered a decent picture. This was the biggest dissapointment, NO component inputs. What the hell's up with that?? Component video allows the very best picture and color from a DVD source. Even on a 27" TV. I took back this TV before I owned it for a month. I ended up with the already mentioned Toshiba. There was close to a $500 difference in prices!! I used the extra cash to upgrade my reciever. (I purchased the awesome Onkyo 575). DVDs look better on the $350 Toshiba then on the $800 Sony. I do miss the flat screen, but hell, I have a brand new reciever to make up for it!

Strength:

picture clarity and flat tube

Weakness:

pricy

overall, i think you are better off getting sony's normal 27" TV, such as the kv27s66, for less money. Although the flat screen might look impressive at first, it wears off pretty quick. I think for the same money, you are better off getting their s series 32" TV. The flat tube suffers from minor geometric rendering problems. If you like to watch tennis, the skewed lines disturb you.

BUT, if you are rich, then go for it.

Strength:

Best picture

Weakness:

component input, remote has no light

Stunning picture, you'll never leave the lazy-boy. Excellent features including, picture modes and not to mention the design and Sony quality.

Although the new Vega's will be the benchmark of all TV's to be judged, Sony should have included component inputs on the 27", 24", and 20".

Strength:

Flat screen, excellent picture quality

Weakness:

Too wide, no component video, no anamorphic "squeeze"

I loved this set the first time I tried it with the Sony DVP-S7700 DVD player. Superb picture detail and color. I disagree with the previous poster -- I continue to appreciate the flat screen every time I turn on the set. But, I notice that this TV is very unforgiving of poor video sources. For example, I thought the picture quality from my cable feed was good until I got Dishnetwork. I didn't realize EVERYTHING could look like DVD! Absolutely stunning. Now I suppose I'll have to do something about that crappy old VCR...

My only personal criticism is the cabinet design. If they hadn't wasted 4" on either side of the set with those speakers, I could have fit a bigger screen into my width-limited entertainment center. I agree with the above poster: another rear s-video input would have served me better than the front one. My Sima switch should be here within a few days, though, so the satellite receiver wonn't have to be wired into the front of the set with the trap door open (yuk).

I'm not sure if these make a difference on a set this small, but I can't help feeling like I'm missing something by a) not having component inputs and b) lacking the ability to "squeeze" the set's picture into a 16:9 area for anamorphic material. Nope, I checked and can't even do the squeeze through the service mode, although you can on some Sony sets.

Overall, I'm extremely pleased.

Strength:

Very good picture quality

Weakness:

Expensive

I owned this 27" Wega for about two months and so far I am
very satisfied with it. Overall picture quality is rated the best among the competitors like Panasonic Superflat(IMHO) although it costs about $200 more.
Honestly I bought this TV part of the factor is because it is Sony, worth to spend little more money on top of the superior quality. I am not a home theater enthusiast(rather I am an audiophile) but I do know this TV is better when I compared it side by side with other 27" TV at the shop.
The only thing I don't like is it does not have component inputs, which I can't use it with my Sony DVD7000 component outputs, and it is quite expensive for 27" TV. Probably this is the kind of price to pay for the latest technology.

Strength:

Flat tube, sharp picture, great intuitive remote

Weakness:

27" model hard to find, price $200 higher than nearest competion in this size

This is a great TV! The flat tube reduces distortion considerably all the way out to edges/corners of the screen. Ambient reflection is also much less than in a conventional tube TV. The picture is exceptionally sharp and bright, even at average settings. I have seen complaints about picture distortion on Wega TVs, but on mine, lines are straight all the way across the screen with no discernible bowing or waviness. The remote is among the best I have seen, very intuitive and has glow-in-the-dark buttons, great when you dim the light for those widescreen DVD movies. I seriously considered only one other 27" TV and that was the Panasonic Superflat, but the Panasonic is nowhere flat despite its ambitious name and picture is not nearly as sharp or bright, but it's also quite a bit cheaper. If you can afford it, go with the Sony.
