looked good when it worked

Weakness:

reliability, lack of features

My experience with these sony TVs is more of a saga than a story. I purchased a KV-32s25 in November of 2001 as an open box. It worked fine and had a great picture for about 6 months, at which time the tube started to flicker off. The TV would stay on, with audio still playing, but no picture. The only remedy was to turn it off and back on again. This got progressively worse until I gave in to my fears and called my local Circuit City(Who have been extremely helpful and accomodating), where I was informed that Sony only has a 90 DAY labor warranty. --On a side note, I contacted sony support and they told me that that model of tv was made in 1996. OUCH.-- However, Circuit City arranged to have the tv sent in for repair free of charge, due to the fact that I was told by the salesman on the floor that it in fact, had a 1 year labor warranty, and that I was sold a 5 year-old tv as new. So 4 weeks go by and still no tv. I call my local circuit city and was told that they still hadn't even sent the tv to be fixed yet, sorry. "Unacceptable" was my response. After speaking with management, I was promised a new tv as an exchange. However, after looking at every model in the store, there was nothing comparable with which to exchange(the kv model 32" tvs are out of production). Then one of the managers came out and said that they had a 2000 model of the same tv --a kv32s42--in the back because it was missing a remote, which wasnt a problem, as my remote would run it. We hooked it up and it seemed to work. Upon getting it home though, we noticed immediately that there was discoloring and distortion on the top and bottom of boths sides of the screen. "Unacceptable" was my response, again. It was obvious to me that this tv was actually defective, not just missing a remote. 2 for 2 Mexican made sonys with bad picture tubes in them. This explains the 90 Labor warranty, I assume. So back to Circuit City we went yet again. This time I traded for a New-in-the-box JVC AV32d303(a "comparable" model) and headed back for the house. Immediately after hooking the jvc up, we noticed what looked like distortion for unsheilded magnets or speakers. We tried moving the entertainment center--no help. We tried moving it to a different room--no help. God hates me, I'm thinking. So back to Circuit City we go. We inform the staff of our predicament(they were THRILLED to see us), and

Strength:

Good picture

Weakness:

Very heavy and apparently short lived.

Set worked fine with great picture and good sound. Price was resonable. But now it is less than two years old and has failed. No picture or sound and we await the repair house call from Sears which will cost $96.

Strength:

Beautiful picture. (For the price)

Weakness:

Unrealiable.

This TV Has an excellent picture with video games, dvds, vhs, regular tv, etc. But one thing that leaves me very pissed about this TV is that it''s NOT reliable. I''ve only had it for a few years. While watching, it will just shut off and when you turn it back on sometimes it will not show a picture, or it will turn right back off. So needless to say I''m very dissapointed in this TV. I expected it to last because we''ve had other Sony TVs last 20+ years. I hate giving one star to a Sony because they have been extremely reliable for us in the past, but this paticular expirence was a waste of my time and money. If I would have wrote this review one year ago, before it crapped out on me, I would have given it 5 out of 5 stars.

Strength:

Great picture, with no extra junk.

Weakness:

None given the price

The best value for the money. Despite the lack of frills it still allows good DVD connection. Great for both video gamers and convential movie goers. Great picture..in fact second only to better Sonys but without the bloated price tag. In todays market 32" is the best size/dollar. Just a couple inches more cost hundreds and its really not worth it. Just sit closer if you really need a bigger picture and save your dough for HDTV (which still needs a few years to mature).

Strength:

Nearly flat tube, fantastic picture quality, decent cabinet size and great price.

Weakness:

Heavy overall, only one input (either RCA or S-Video).

I've had a Sony TV for 10 years now and they are simply the best TVs on the market. First of all the tube is nearly flat, particularly at the corners. Sonys have had this feature for at least 2 decades. The most important thing in a TV is the picture quality. Sony surpasses any other manufacturers' TV in the various prices brackets that exist. This TV is only lacking in the fact that you can't hook up a VCR and a DVD at the same time. It's one or the other. For more input features you must go one model up to the least expensive Wega. This costs 70% more in Canada and only delivers a completely flat tube and the extra input.

As I've seen for myself and as one TV technician has told me, the base Wegas have the same picture quality as the regular Trinitrons do. Trust me, you'll see no difference. It's the XBR Wega that has a much, much better picture than any other TV on the market but it's 3 times the price of my 32S42. It's just a matter of months before Sony discontinues the slightly curved Trinitrons that have made them famous. By next year, only Wegas will be available which is no bad thing as long as they drop their prices and offer them in black and not just silver. For now though, these S-series Sony TVs are a fantastic value and even better picture quality.

Though one or two people may complain about this TV, it's just that they obviously have bought a defective model. A properly working Sony has no equal. I'm not a Sony employee and would gladly buy another brand if it were as good and I'm sure one day the other manufacturers will catch up.

Strength:

Great picture quality. Tri-lingual screen displays. Stereo surround is really crisp.

Weakness:

None

As most Sony Trinitron, this is a great TV. One problem, if you have a center speaker as part of your surround, you will have problems setting up the speaker on top of the TV. The top of the TV is not flat, it's more at an angle and most center speakers could slide off with vibrations.

Strength:

decent picture (after calibration), trinitron screen

Weakness:

number of inputs, cant do squeeze, sound (if you plan on using the tv speakers)

there are better tvs in this price range. the reason i am selling it is because when i play video games there are large curvy black bars on each side of the screen. also no component inputs. this tv does not do the squeeze feature through the service menu. (at least without chopping off the sides of the picture). however this tv did present a very nice picture which i am happy with. but thats it. instead of this get a jvc or toshiba. much better and similar price.

Strength:

Exceptional clarity, brilliant color
moderate price

Weakness:

Limited S-Video and composite inputs

Without a doubt one of the best
values available I got mine at CC for
$629. Factory setting are so far off
it is a wonder anyone would purchase
this when seen at their dealers
showroom however given alittle video
essentials and magic you have a set
capable of providing what you would
expect from a much higher priced TV.
I am currently using the Sima S-Video
switcher and have no trouble
automatically switching a DVD, Webtv,
(its that clear to make an excellent
internet monitor) and JVC S-Video
VHS VCR. FIVE STARS Plus Sony.

Strength:

Picture color & brightness. Sharp picture.

Weakness:

Bad picture tube? Very heavy.

Unfortunately, I bought this TV today & it's going back tomorrow. Horizontal lines throughout the picture are very distorted. The upper right corner is the worse, bending down & to the left. Bright objects (ie, a window or chrome bumper) also distort the surrounding video. It is without a doubt one of the worse pictures I've seen in this regard. Very disappointed, especially considering it's a Sony.
