Strength:

Great overall picture performance and geometry

Weakness:

Spoiled by sloppy convergence and bad corner focus (mainly lower left in my case). My unit looked average on delivery compared to those in stores and now is a lot better but no where near as good as it could be.

I touched up the geometry slightly using the service mode. It was already very good. I brought in the over scan to the picture edge as I always do with new TV's. This always help resolution, brightness and shrinks compression artifacts.

Unfortunately the 15 or so service mode convergence controls do NOTHING! I reverted to compromising the static convergence, focus (which was off) and what looks like corner focus/ purity pots. It's a lot better, but I'd like to converge it more. Does anyone know if the sevice mode convergence settings are not valid for this set or is there an optional ENABLE setting? I'm ordering a manual.

I noticed that someone has already been removing stuck on magnets during production - not a good sign. That a pretty pathetic sign of Sony's incompetence in production engineering.

I generally avoid even trying to communicate to the service staff as it often results in a conversation that might be had with a 3 year old.

Strength:

It's one of the best pictures on the market

Weakness:

Heavy as hell and high price

For all the people complaining about how its just a DVD player TV and how you can't watch TV on it, I just have to ask one question: I sure hope that you aren't recieving your signal from normal cable. Don't even consider buying a nice TV such as this one unless you have a DSS system. I feel sorry if you are using regular cable because you are missing out on so much!! My advice is to go out and get a DSS system as soon you can. If you do already own one and are still having problems, then I would consult someone to look at your television because something is definitely wrong with it.

Weakness:

Terrible geometry and Sony service

I am yet another poor person who purchased this set with great enthusiasm only to be disappointed by the geometry problems that others have mentioned. In all other regards I love the set, and would like to rate it higly. However, the bad geometry ruins it for me. Also, service from Circuit City and Sony has been terrible. Sony doesn't admit there is a problem, and just wants to send out an authorized service rep. They recomended a company to come out and look at it, but this company then said that they didn't want to get involved because the problem can't be corrected ! That's Sony service for you. I have tried making adjustments thru the service menu with some success, but the geometry is still bad. I have one more try coming with another service tech who will be visiting. If that doesn't do it - I'll be returning this TV. I hope Sony takes notice of customer experiences like this, but somehow I doubt it based on the attititude of their customer support folks.

I have had my set for about a month now and I have only had one problem withit. It has a slight almost non-noticible geometry problem. The picture
quality is very amazing. Watching DVD movies on my Sony 550 provides a very
sharp picture, especially with the vertical compression. I think it is the
best picture available under HDTV. I have bought a sony str-de935 receiver
that is still on backorder, and I hope that it will bring out the best in
my TV watching. This TV is definetly worth spending $2100.

Strength:

Great Picture, lifelike flesh tones, super crisp colors, lots of picture setting choices, easy to use menu.

Weakness:

Second s-video in the front, requires adjusts to settings depending on what video source your using or what channel your watching. Pricey.

The TV came yesterday as promised and it did not disappoint.
I experienced none of the problems you will read about if you continue down here. I have a Dish Network Satellite with a S-Video output that I plug into the back S_Video input, but since my DVD does not have a component output I had to use the second one in the front of the set. I wish it had Two in the back and one in the front. But I guess this just means I need a new DVD player. Best advice I can give is don't believe everything you read and judge for yourself. Also, don't assume the way the tv is set up in the store is right, or is the way you would set it up at home.

Good TV, Many Features

Weakness:

Too Overpriced, STUPID headphones!!!

1 Month ago, I purchased a Sony 36XBR250. When I recieved this tv, I had picture purity problems and other minor issues. However, I was impressed with the picture resolution and color saturation. After 3 weeks, I felt that the $200 price difference between the 36xbr250 and Sony 53v80 RPTV was compelling. I could not justify spending $2000 on a TV that was half the size of the Sony 53" TV. I returned the XBR250 and exchanged it for a 53v80. I was impressed by the color output of the RPTV, it was equal to the XBR unit.

The Sony 36XBR250 is a good TV, I removed the case to calibrate the unit with Avia. I was impressed by the speaker inclosures on each side of the TV. The XBR 250 is build very well, but it should be for the XBR series. If you are picky about picture quality, and REALLY scrutinize the picture performance, you will find uneven brightness and other minor issues. I feel that Sony's RPTV are better overall. Please understand, I am not trashing on the XBR250, I'm just being realistic. I dislike some of the inaccurate articles on this site, but most are very good.

Overall, the Sony 36XBR250 is a good TV, but not worth the $2000.00 that it costs. If you are thinking of getting a 36xbr250, shell out the extra $200.00 for the 53v80. After 1 week, I cant find any problems at all with this RPTV.

WOW!!!!! Man I just hooked up my Sony SAT-B50 DSS receiver and wow. This Picture is amazing. Sports and Vivid appear a little washed out but on NTSC or better yet Movie mode this set really shines. The picture is nearly flawless. I have had no problems with geometry, goofy colored bands or any of the stuff discussed here. After looking over reviews at this site there appears to be quite a bit of Sony bashing here. I have this hooked up to Sony SAT-B50 DSS, a Sony DVP-S530D DVD and both of them have worked flawlessly since day one. These are great products and (other than this WEGA) have great pricing. I love my set-up.

Can anyone tell me how to turn off "digital noise reduction" in the service menu of the 36xbr250?
Thanx in advance to anyone that helps me out.

xbr model 200 32inch I am very pleased with the picture quality on this unit. I have all sources connected with either component video cables or composite video cables
as suggested by my dealer;who says that the 3d comb filter
is far better than the filters in either my dvd player or
dss, laser disc.I have not seen or used the cables that
are suggested by so many reviewers, but may also suggest
Tara Labs video ht or even video rsc.
