Strength:

PICTURE!

Weakness:

NOTHING~

I have the Sony DVP-S7700 player which I connected to the component input via the Monster Z300 Cables!

After a A/B comparison with the Sony 9000 ES SACD/DVD player connected to the second component via another set of Z300 cables, watching the same movie running at the same time, with the same picture adjustments! This is the conclusion: I am not buying the 9000 ES. This Tv's DRC feature is the BOMB! The colors are so rich and the picture is so detailed and sharp that I was laughing every 5 minutes, all weekend during the movie watching experience!

This is the best direct view TV in the WORLD! If you have a top of the line DVD player, you don't have to buy a progressive one, I swear folks. What a TV! I am in LOVE!

The settiing that I suggest is the Movie mode with the VCM turned off and WARM setting! You're all set!

My father owns this television and it is by far the best television I have ever seen this side of HDTV. My father had his television calibrated by a certified ISF(Imaging Science Foundation) Technician. His picture was not perfect out of the box, but it looked awesome after being calibrated by a liscensed technician. I think everyone would have less gripes about this awesome television if they would just get the picture properly setup. Besides, it only costs about 200$ for an ISF person to set it up.
I've been bitten by the HT bug....I think I've got Upgraditis.. I will purchase this TV, or a similar model, because my father's is absolutely amazing.

.....now if I could just fine $2000 lying around my apartment...

My experience with the 36xbr250 has been very frustrating because it is close to being a superb set, but I've had a few problems with mine. My first set was defective, with a bright stripe 1/2" wide on the left edge of the screen. I exchanged this for another one, which didn't have the bright stripe but still had other problems.
First the good points. The picture quality in general is great. Colors are deep and vibrant, black is very black. The video amp in these units seems very good, the picture does not bloom when scenes change from dark to light. The flat screen is much more pleasing than a curved tube. Anamorphic DVDs look stunning, with very high resolution and no visible scan lines.

I used the Avia disc to test geometry, convergence and focus. Geometry on both sets was actually very good. Both needed a slight tilt adjustment from the user menu. After this adjustment, horizontal lines were generally very straight, but vertical lines were tilted to the right. Adjusting the VANG parameter in the service menu fixed this problem. All squares in the crosshatch pattern measured within 10% of each other. Both sets had very good convergence. The first one had almost perfect convergence everywhere (even in the corners) but the middle left edge, which was off about 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch. The second set has very good convergence except for an area on the mid-lower right side, which was off about 1/16". Focus on the side edges was somewhat mediocre on the first set, and very good on the second. My understanding is that this is excellent performance overall for a 36" TV.

Now to the problems. This tube seems to problems with uniformity and color purity. Both sets had a dark area on the left side which started about 3/4" from the left side and was 5" wide. Both sets also had a slightly pinkish band on the right side. If you look at a black screen in a dark room you can see right 25% of the screen is slightly lighter than the rest. The second set has reddish discoloration in the top-left and bottom-left corners. These problems are somewhat subtle, but the corner discoloration is hard to ignore once you notice it. The serial numbers on my sets were 9010060 and 9009755.

I keeping the second set because I don't think I can manage to lug this 230 pound behemoth back to the store again. I would advise anyone who buys this set to get it from a high-end dealer who will deliver and set it up and take care of you if something goes wrong, even if it costs more. I also wouldn't recommend this set to anyone who's a perfectionist.

I'd hoped this set would be one I'd want to keep for 5 or so years, but now it seems more like an interim solution until something better comes along.

I was compelled to check out the the new KV-36XBR250 based on a fantastic review of the previous KV-36XBR200 model in the 2/99 issue of Stereophile Guide To Home Theater. I had originally been looking at large screen RPTV's,but decided that anything larger than a 36 inch set would probobly be too imposing in my modestly sized living room. I looked at some other sets by Panasonic,Pro Scan, and Phillips, but none of them captivated me as much as the Sony. I ended up purchacing the set at Phill's TV,a small independent shop in Toledo for $1788,and another $175 for the matching stand. This was about $200 less than the quote I got from Circut City, and included delivery and setup. I was surprised at the mixed reviews the Wega's have gotten on this site. Could Sony's quality control be so inconsistant that you either get a fantastic set,or one plauged with problems? I'm no vidiophile, but I just don't see how it could get much better than this with a NTSC television. I have looked at some of the much more costly HDTV's out there, and IMHO,the sony comes so close in refinment and resolution, that the diminishing return factor really sinks in. I have only had the set for three weeks, and so far it has performed flawlessly. If anything negative comes up,I will post an update, but for now,I'll give it a solid four speakers.

This is a spectacular unit. I've been looking at XBR sets for a year in a local showroom and casually comparing them to other units. I haven't seen anything to match it's depth and richness. Rear projection units can't come close and to my eye this beats the Panasonic flat screen. Frankly I like it more than the few HDTV's I've seen, although I don't know what kind of source material those had on at the time.
"A Bug's Life" is stunning on this set with the DVD player on 16 x 9 and the TV in movie mode. There were colors I never dreamed of, either in this movie in the theater or simply on a TV screen. My laser copy of Hamlet is much less wavy now (even through composite wiring). The previous reviewer who complained about the scan lines should have taken some time to play with the source component or the sharpness control on the TV itself. I rarely notice them with DVD's now.

The one issue I'm having is with some loss in extreme shadow portions. I haven't found the right balance by bumping the brightness without losing color richness. Better cords and room lighting should help. But the main issue is I don't have component outs on my DVD or a pre/pro with s-video inputs, so I'm running the DVD through with s-video and laser with composite. Some equipment upgrades will help the source material a lot. I don't believe it's a problem with the TV at all.

This sets the benchmark as I upgrade my home theater system. I can't imagine, and have not seen, a better picture. Now for the sound!

I'm the unfortunate owner of a wega xbr200. The new model has slightly better quality control, but is still plagued with problems. At a local dealer(Good Guys's), I found 2 of the 4 sets in the various locations to be as bad as ANY xbr200 thats passed through my doors. One was acceptable( about as good as the xbr200 that I finally kept. One was absolutely perfect. No anomalies whatever. Too bad I didn't wait 6 to 8 months to buy. I give the xbr250 1.5 stars.

Strength:

picture quality (color, sharpness, etc, flat screen, sound.

Weakness:

no good grip for moving this tv. took 3 guys to move it.

Personally I don't like projector tv's because the picture sucks once you are off the sweet spot. This is the biggest and best quality direct view set out there. The picture/color.. are unbelievable! The comb filters did an excellent job. Flat screen is great. Why would anyone purchase a concave screen tv however slight the curve maybe (the top line proscan may have a more beautiful picture but the curve screen just don't cut it, and it costs more) The sound of the Sony is very good on its own but need a more powerful subwofer. You must use external HT system to enhance viewing experience. This is very heavy (a good thing) which should justify some design to provide grip for moving it. It took three of us guys to move this thing from floor to tv stand. Store displays may not look impressive because their settings are almost always wrong. I've only seen one vendor with correct settings. paid $1550 cash.

SONY: CAN YOU MAKE A BIGGER ONE? 42-50" !!! If you do you will corner the first and second tier projectors market out there, making them all obsolete instantly!

Attention fellow XBR owners:
For
those of you who are experiencing uneven brightness in dark passages while watching DVD’s, go to your menu
and turn your brightness down a few notches. DVD (especially in component out ) has a high degree of luminous
signal.

Had this unit ship for just over a week.
No such geometry nor discoloring problems. Simply stunning and always amaze me no matter which source I feed it in. Calibrate with VE and get very saturated color and excellent black/white contrast. I paid about $1500
including shipping and taxes, good huh?
The $2100 price tag is just a bit too
high, though.

Hey, Mr. Michael Wetz, I need the info
about the Canare component cables. Can
you email me to ruenhual@yahoo.com???
Thanks!
