Strength:

The dual tunner is just what I needed with the digital Cable box so I am able to record Pay for view and watch the regular channels.I know you can do this with other 2 tunner sets, but the picture is outstand ing.also, I would say it is the next best to HDTV.

Weakness:

None found to date.

I read the reviews here and elsewhare about this set for a least 3 months before I purchased it in earley Dec.2001.This set has been short of great right out of the box. I compleatly set it up by myself. I to on libe to Toshiba.com and dowdloaded the manual, that was a great help, so that when it came time to hook it up to my, Digital Cable Box, my new Toshiba DVD, the Sony VCR and The Sony Stero. I had all of the contion wires and cables that I needed before I brought it home. It has not been the least of a problem since the day I took it out of the box and plugged it in

Strength:

Multiple hookup including dual RF''s and component inputs.

Weakness:

NONE

If you are looking for a 36 inch sized TV or less, then look no further. This has it all from Dual tuner PiP, to component hookups. Plus it has two video hookups, plus an extra RF hookup. Picture quality rivals the Sony Wega. But the price definitely is better.

Great picture!!

Weakness:

None, zero, zilch

I'm always trying to get the most bang for my buck and this is no exception. This is a great TV. I got it for $799 (online pricematch) from sears. Looked at comparable (Sony WEGA's, Panasonic, etc., and this smokes all but the Sony, but at half the price, a no brainer. The picture, from cable or directly from DVD, is outstanding. You must use the component video hookup, you'll be amazed. People complain about the speakers, but if you have a 36" TV, you should have an HT system to go with it. Great TV, can't say enough.

I just found what causes these lines. It's the dreaded "MOIRE PROBLEM"!!!! Other's have described this as lines and grid like lines. I didn't consider this a typical moire pattern, but the end of the lines do curve. Can't believe after "3 YEARS", Toshiba didn't fix this!! Guess I should had know after their audio drop out problems with DVD players. Guess I'll avoid Toshiba like the plague!!

Strength:

Vivid Color, Sharp Contrast, Multiple Inputs, 2 Tuner PIP

Weakness:

Shared Input (RF/S-Video), Remote, Menu Display

After much research I deceided to purchase the 36A60 to replace my 1988 27" RCA. For the money, I don't think I could find a better TV. Side by side with RCA, JVC, and Sony, I found the Tosh colors were more vivid and natural, and objects have more detail. If you are waiting for HDTV prices to settle down, this is the tube to watch while you're waiting.
If you don't have an A/V amp or receiver, the 36A60 has enough inputs to handle cable, Sat, DVD, and a VCR: Video-1 & Video2 (A/V RCA jacks), RF1 & RF2 (75ohm coax), S-Video, and Color Stream/Component Video (Red, Blue, and Green RCAs with L & R audio). First fault - you can't use both the Video-1 and the S-Video inputs, it's one or the other. If you have an A/V amp that shouldn't be a problem. Also, it has a RF and a composite video outputs. Another shortcomming - no front A/V jacks for the camcorder/digital camera input. Again not a problem if your A/V amp has front inputs.
I've noted reviews of other TVs where the reviewer stated they could not see a difference between RF, S-Video, and component video. Not with this set. There are very distinct differences, each one a step up in picture color and contrast. I connected my Panasonic DVD C-220 with an Ultra Component video cable from Better Cables and was blown away by the colors and fine picture details that were not apparent with S-Video.
Other design fauxpas: 1. The menu button on the remote is in the wrong place, the menu keeps popping up when changing channels or the volume (get a Pronto or universal remote). 2.The Menu display covers 2/3s of the screen making it difficult to calibrate the video. I found the default brightness, contrast and sharpness levels too high - adjust them down and extend the life of the tube and get a better picture. Also, the mute does work and will show CC if the channel is CC capable.
So far, after one month of use (knock on wood and the extended warranty), I have not had high contrast bluming, color blotching, pink hued white objects, sound hissing or humming. It has worked perfectly each time I hit the power on button.
If you are thinking of buying a 36" tube, I highly recommend the 36A60. Sports fans, Sat and cable junkies, and Home Theater builders on a budget -you will be hard pressed to find a better TV value for your dollars.

Strength:

Perfect Geometry, great detail, and resolution.

Weakness:

Dark contrast horizontal lines everywhere on motionless or stable reds, oranges, and gray backgrounds. These lines are even more noticable on every background during vertical pans, and still there for a couple seconds even after scene is motionless or stable. These are not scan lines but seem to protray them on vertical pans. These horizontal lines are spaced much more than the typically small spacings of scan lines. Even at 13', these lines are distracting, very apparent.

Picture is tuned more green than blue than what I've seen on my other 3 televisions. This is a negative since I more partial to an emphasis on blue.

This set offers the best detailed, dynamic, and punchy picture I've seen, with velvety blacks.

Unfortunately, the above statement means nothing when the picture is riddled with the very distracting horizontal lines mentioned in the weakness section. These horizontal lines seem to be more of a distortion of the tube or perhaps the scanning circuit. Regardless, these lines render the television useless to me, as it's very irritating trying to watch a scene covered in vertical lines. Also, as these lines get closer to the right and left screen edges, they becomes arched, arching down toward the bottom.

I've seen these horizontal lines on 2 sets, thinking this was a defect of the first set. I've called and emailed Toshiba with them stating no knowledge of these lines. Since these were brand new televisions, I expected more and am not going through the hassle of repair people trying to figure out what these lines are, and how to get rid of them.

BTW, in a highly lit area, as demo areas are of superstores, these horizontal lines are very hard to see with the reflections of the picture tubes. Once in your living room with low tube reflection, these lines jump out at you, and plague your television with a raked look.

Definately not what I would expect from a $400 36", and definately not from a $1100 MSRP 36" television set.

This television is going back for a refund, as it's unuseable to me, in everyway.

Since these lines can't be overlooked, essentionally destroying the picture when there are scenes of orange, red, and greys, all at low constrast scenes, I can only give this the lowest rating possible.

As much as I hate Sony, I may end up going back to them after my disappointment with JVC, Panasonic, and now Toshiba. Can no one engineer and manufacture a good set anymore?!?

Strength:

picture quality, sound ain't too shabby

Weakness:

menu button in the middle of the remote

It's hard to believe that this product could be as bad as the reviews have said. With such a distict difference between absolutely hating this model to thinking that it is better than the Sony Wega, I would have to only assume that the 1 star ratings that this television has gotten is just plain ol' bad luck that those people have experienced.

I have been using this tv for well over 8 months on a daily basis. In fact, I usually end up falling asleep with it on just about every night for the first 6 months. Because of that, this set has had more than extensive use and I have not had a single problem to date. I have a Sony DVD player hooked directly to the inputs in the back of the set using Component video cables. The quality is phenominal!! My friends come over and marvel at it's great quality. I also have Digital Cable which works just as well, without problem.

The sound is decent, but really, if you want great sound from a TV, you'll never find it. Get some sort of HT package!

This is the best TV I have ever owned!

Toshiba has always been great with televisions! I will stay with them as long as I can!

Strength:

Great Picture. Either go with this or go Digital. A big-screen projection isn't worth it, a nice 36" works better if you ask me.

Weakness:

None that I know of.

Great TV, nice picture. As said above, go digital or go with this TV. You can't really beat this TV, the only thing that might compare is a really nice $1500 Sony. Overall, I haven't had one problem with this television. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Weakness:

Location of Menu button & Exit button on remote control

I looked at various TV's and I realized at the time I did not want to spend around $2000 for the HDTV-ready TV's. Therefore, I looked at standard pictures and decided on buying a picture tube because they just impressed me more than the standard rear projections. The only TV that I considered other than the Toshiba was the Sony Wega because these were the only TVs that had Component hookups. However, I did not want to spend $1,500 for a regular picture TV (overpriced & overrated).

The Toshiba's picture is wonderful and it truly looks wonderful when playing DVD's using the Component hookups. The curvature in the tube is minor, not to mention you have to pay twice as much for the flat Wega. I have no complaints with television watching and the sound is fine for watching normal TV (I use my DTS/Digital receiver for movies).

The price is very nice for the quality/price and I have been a happy user for over 6 months.

Green Box around PIP

I too started out looking for a small projection TV. After planning on spending $2500 and researching for months I just could not bring myself to spend $2500 for a TV. I started looking at 36" TV's and was drawn to the sony WEGA, it did have a great picture but again it was $1500. I did some online research and a lot of browsing and decided on the Toshiba for $900.

I love it! The picture is remarkable, I was especially drawn to the componet video connection that this model offers. The clarity when watching a DVD is amazing! The remote is well designed and can operate the VCR and cable box.

The only negative I have found is that when using the PIP there is a green border around the PIP and it casts a green tint to the surrounding picture, it is very bold. It is really a minor annoyance because I rarely use the PIP function.

One word of advice, when you are shopping fo a TV in a warehouse store, Best Buy etc., TV's appear mutch smaller than actual size. I was disapointed that I settled for the 36" insted of the 52" big screen, however once I unloaded this 250 pound monster and drug it into my living room it looked huge!!! There is no way a 52" TV would have looked right.
