Just an update...

I had a technician come out (had to before they would do an exchange) and try to eliminate the moire problem. He had never heard of the term or how to fix it (go figure). He was a nice guy though and I told him I had come across info on how to eliminate or decrease it. To simply defocus the picture ever so slightly. Well, he did it and the wavey lines are gone! It softened up the picture just a little bit which is pleasing to my eyes. I also had him do a tilt adjustment to try and staighten out the letter-boxing black bars. Anyways, I just wanted to pass this info on to others. I will keep this TV because it appears to be okay and I don't feel like lugging it back (I've exchanged 3 other various models). Every TV seems to have it's kinks or quirks. You just have to try and figure out how to fix/lessen them or which are acceptable (that you want to live with). I am bumpin' my rating up to 3. Still don't like the menu. FYI...I paid $729+tax locally which I feel is a decent price.

Strength:

great color, multi window channel scan

Weakness:

quality control

I bought this set to bide the time while the HD tv issue settles & the price is reasonable. The first set that I bought had a "pixel" defect. Its like there is "mole" on the screen. I exchanged it for another set & this one had the "moire" problem . I read in other Toshiba model posting that Toshiba is aware of this problem. I will be calling them on Friday & hope they could fix it. Don't get me wrong I love this tv except that I wished it had a "flatter" screen. Right now is one star till they fixed the problem. Has anyone has any update from Toshiba regarding the
"fix-it" for this defect.

Strength:

- Crisp picture
- Composite video inputs
- Easy to use remote
- 2-tuner PIP

Weakness:

- None seen yet

I must have gotten a set built early in the week (versus on a Friday) as I've had no problems in the 6 months I've had it. Based on these reviews, however, I opted for a 5 year in-home warranty.

The 2-tuner picture-in-picture was great during football season. I didn't appreciate the crispness of the picture until a month ago when I (finally) purchased a DVD player. What a differnce digital makes! I no longer rent tapes. Though not quite as sharp as the stratospherically-priced Sony flatscreens, most viewers will be happy with this set.

I found the setup menu to be fairly easy to navigate. I have not used a reference disk to calibrate, but did make some changes during initial setup to soften the picture. The internal surround settings doesn't simulate surround sound, but does broaden the soundstage a bit. It is no substitute for home theater components, though.

For my money and viewing habits, this is a great set.

Weakness:

comb filter

I'll be the first to say I am very disappointed with this TV. After 3 days I am ready to return it! It has the infamous moire (as was explained to me) problem. I did not invest my money into a TV only to sit and watch wavey lines run through the picture during all verticle movement. Extremely annoying!!! If you have cable...the comb filter stinks compared to the 3D Y/C filter that was in a Panasonic Superflat I had before this terrible Toshiba. The menu stinks too. While trying to calibrate using AVIA...the menu blocks too much of the screen. There are 3 modes in the menu: Normal, Memory and Theater. You can't change the settings (contrast, color, tint, etc.) for Normal or Theater. Why??? I'm so disappointed in this TV that I don't even want to write about it! Your money would be better spent on something else. 1 star for the remote and because it's the lowest I can select =)

Weakness:

moire, static (audio)

Man o man. I am losing my faith in Toshiba. First I bought a 27 inch cinema series TV. 30 days later the pincushion circut fries. Returned it and bumped up to the 32. Liked the stylings of the 27 better, but oh well.

No surprise here, my set has the moire problem. Also, (and I'd love to chat with the last reviewer about this), my tv's speakers emit static--even with the volume all the way down. Is this normal? The last tv I owned has a rotary volume dial, and off was off. It's not very loud, but easily audible. I've taken measures to lower the room noise, and this isn't helping things. The 60Hz whine is a bit much at times too.

I'm calling a tech tomorrow. This is insane. I didn't pay $1000 (Canadian) for a tv with static for sound, and wavy rainbow's for picture. AAARRRRGGGGG!!

I'm going to see if maybe he can just snip the wires to the tv's speakers (last resort of course). I never use them and the static really picks my ass.

As it stands, I'm pissed. This tv puts out a nice pic as far as sharpness and vibrancy of color, but the static and moire are a real bummer. As it stands I would never buy Toshiba again. I'll write a review after having a tech out, but for now this tv is WORTHLESS.

Buying a new tv you want to love it. You find reasons to. Things I was able to write off in the beginning have now built up and now really bother me. Oh, and the right side of the picture has a slight curve to it.

WORTHLESS.

Strength:

PRICE, Backlit Remote, Favorite channel quickscan

Weakness:

Nothing at this price-point.

My goal in the purchase of a television was to have a big picture that was affordable enough that I could bin it and by a high-dev TV in 3-5 years. I looked at all the competition. Sony is great, but sucks with normal cable and costs slightly more that a NASA shuttle. The GAOO's were typical at best and the JVC had microscopic buttons on the remote.

I trust the Toshiba brand name from their laptops. This TV has performed well. I never thought I wanted a backlit remote or a 9-channel quickscan, now I use them continuously. I taught the remote by DVD player, now I need not get up off the couch. :) It has component out and S-type connections.

I have not experienced any "moire" or buzzing speakers. I do keep the speakers turned off at all time as I have surrounds through a receiver. I would recommend this as a value purchase, great to bridge the gap until digital cable becomes mainstream.

Strength:

dual tuner PIP, Contrast and Programmable Remote.

Weakness:

Product consistancy - If I would have read the reviews here, I never would have bought this POS!

I'm not getting moire, nor the sound problems, but I have 3 "pools" or fields of purple around the center of the screen. They are best seen when the screen is white, like during a hockey game. I also notice it when a person moves from one side of the screen to the other since their skin tone changes. The pools are slight, but once you see them, they never leave your mind.

When I looked at this set in the store and I did a lot of side-by-side comparisons, this was the best compromise/value. The picture quality of the in store box looked great. I normally would have bought a Sony, but I opted for the Toshiba for it's darker picture tube (for better contrast), slightly sharper image and comparable color.

I've owned nothing but Sony for the past 20 years and always loved the color/image quality. I was hoping I could get a nice mid-sized set that would last me until the price of HDTV came down, but it looks like I should have stuck to my one gun Sony. I'm very sorry I switched.

This is by far the worst purchase I've made in life. I get ill every time I sit down to watch it.

I've had the technician out 3 times. He says there's nothing more he can do. Toshiba has been no help, the Tech and the retailer really don't care. Looks like I'm going to fight with Toshiba to get this baby exchanged.

Any suggestions?

UPDATE:

OK, so I had a tech out and we sorted out most of the problems. He installed a switch for the internal speakers, and now there is no static (when switched off of course). We rooted through the service menu, and my set was a bit off. Adjusted convergence and vpos/hpos. Now I have a good set.

I don't currently use component, but I've tested it out with my buddy's DVD (mine only has s). No green flashes. Looks great. Calibrated it to Video Essentials. What a difference. Don't even think of using the factory presets! Once you've seen what this set can deliver, you'll be amazed.

My cabling is AR all around. Pretty good stuff. Comparable to Monster Cable (at least in my experiences). The 60hz hum is audible, but subsides after the set's been on for a while. The tech maintained that every set produces it; the bigger the set, the louder the hum. I'll buy that.

All in all, I'm not too fond of getting two bummed sets, but I must admit that the Toshiba tech was very accomodating and helpful. He straightened out everything but the moire (which of course I couldn't produce for him when he was over--cursed Murphy ;)

Bottom line: A great looking set when calibrated--probably the best I've seen for the price. Just don't expect to plug it in and run with it. Prepare yourself for the possibility of a bummed unit. Find out the local repair tech's number when you take this puppy home. Odds are you'll be giving him a call.

My ratings explanation: 5 for value as it looks great for the price. 4 overall because of the problems. They were fixable, and cost me nothing, so I'll only knock off 1 point.

Weakness:

none so far.

Great picture on this toshiba.Colors seem very rich and striking compared to other tv's.Cable reception is great and i have experienced absolutely no moire problems or any other problems.Just a great picture.I have the picture setting at cool and all other settings at 50%.Although i have a modest home theater audio setup i usually use the tv speakers for regular viewing and the sound is very good, more than adequate.I will soon purchase a toshiba dvd player and i can't wait.My 11 year old 27 inch sony was a tremendous tv and it was difficult to change brands, but i just liked the toshiba's picture best. The sony wega's have a great picture also but i just felt that the wega picture at times looked to edgy and somewhat artificial and overly bright. All in all i think this toshiba is a fine tv.
