Strength:

Strong tuner for broadcast channels. Crisp clear picture.

Weakness:

MOIRE - Absolutely the most distracting problem a TV can have.

A televisions primary goal is to deliver a good clear visual display and this set does that very well. BUT, and it is a big but, I find myself watching the sides of the screen for the moire problem rather than watching the content of the program being shown. This so distracting and agitating that I have returned two sets and will replace them with the cn36x81 HD set. Do not waste your time and money on this unit without first viewing some video content such as "The Horse Whisperer" which shows the moire issue very well in the first few minutes of the movie.

Strength:

Beautiful clear picture, vivid colors, great sound, easy to operate.

Weakness:

None that I can find.

I love it. Doesn't have the moire problem noted in other reviews, maybe because it is the 2000 model. The picture is as good or better than the Sony Wega. Sure, the TV is heavy, but the screen is huge and the set is loaded with features. This TV has gotten a bad rap here from some reviewers, but I am very pleased with mine.

Strength:

I used to think there were some...no more

Weakness:

MOIRE, MOIRE, and MOIRE

I was planning on buying thw XBR Wega whan I walked into the store. The salesman had the Toshiba and Sony sitting side by side and they were playing that Sony disk (the one with the lions and other wildlife). Side by side there were subtle differences that gave the toshiba a slightly better picture ( mostly only in the details in shadows )and for about $500 less it seemed like the better of the two choices. The first few days I was quite pleased, then I started to notice the moiré. It has been getting progressively worse and I have had several techs look at the set. All of them say the same thing, de-focus the tube. Unacceptabe! I spoke with Toshiba and detailed the problem and my concerns to them….they did not care in the least. This set will be returned and the Sony will be purchased. Save your self the trouble and DO NOT BUY THIS TV! You would do better buying something from Wal-Mart, as long as it was not Toshiba.

Strength:

Lots of features, good res, good colors, built-in subwoofer

Weakness:

Moire problems, slow tuner

As with the 36H97 and other Toshiba models, this one has the Moire problem. It is not always obvious but is annoying under some circumstances.

The tuner is also very slow. There is an annoying delay when switching channel.

Would recommend caution before buying.

Strength:

So many features it's frightening. Loads of inputs. Great picture when the moire is not there

Weakness:

MOIRE

Simply put this is a love-hate relationship.

I love this TV when the moire isn't there, which is 80% of the time. However, it is something that once you notice it, you will see it everytime it happens.

There is still hope! Toshiba has created a technician kit that is supposedly a fix for the moire problem. The kit number is:

23589030

Hopefully this 'kit' entails a little more than the defocusing of the set. If that's all it does, then I may return this TV.

Strength:

Excellent picture

Weakness:

MOIRE

As with the other reviewers, I've had problems with moire on this set. I'm currently on my second one, and, while the moire is less noticable than the first set we tried, it's still there. For a $1500 set, I don't expect these kinds of problems (particularly when the moire problem on Toshiba has been so well documented on the 'net). I'm exchanging it for the 36" Panasonic Superflat (36sf36) tomorrow. The picture looked comparable, and I haven't heard much about moire problems with that set.

Strength:

Very nice picture, every input you could ask for.

Weakness:

Moire...Moire and more Moire

I was very impressed with this set in the store but got it home and was hit with the Moire virus. I am on my second set and will be returning it in the next couple of days. I payed way to much for this TV to be getting this kind of problems.

Strength:

stunning picture once calibrated, component input, 3D comb filter, cost

Weakness:

slow tuner, input switching

I owned this set for about 4 months. I had to replace the first set because of moire problems. It was pretty bad. Luckily, I bought the set from a dealer (Video Only) with a 30 days return policy and I was able to exchange it within a couple of days. The manufacturing date on this set was December 1999, as was the first set. I guess it doesn't matter when the set was manufactured. It depends on your luck. I had the set calibrated by an ISF certified technician. Now, I couldn't be happier. The picture is stunningly beautiful. Using a set of good cables also help. I am using Canare component video cables.

The set can use a couple of improvements, however. I've never seen a tuner as slow as this one. It can be annoying and downright frustrating if this is your primary TV set and watch a lot of regular TV programming. Please consider this seriously before buying the set. Another problem with this set is the input swithching. It doesn't allow you to select the desire input directly. You have to cycle through to select the desire input. It doesn't bother me as much because my A/V receiver has the video swithching.

The bottom line is, yes, this set has moire problems. Yes, the tuner is slow. But if you buy it from a store with a solid return policy and if you can live with a slow tuner, you will be happy for a long time. And it costs approximately $500 less than WEGA XBR and you don't see any scan lines that you see on Sony.

Strength:

Numerous features- no. of inputs, color temp setting, audio quality, crisp clean picture most of the time.

Weakness:

Picture quality during sporting events. Instead of smoothe curves on objects, they appear flat, jagged or digitized. This may be the moire effect I've read about. A technician is coming out on 01/29/00 to check out the set.

I have owned the set since 11/99. I really like all of the features the set has to offer. However, when the problem with the picture(moire) appears, it very difficult to concentrate on anything other than this problem. A set this expensive should not have this problem. I would not purchase this set again.

Strength:

Kick Ass Picture. Razor sharp clarity & vibrant colors.

Weakness:

Moire.

I recently bought a Toshiba CN36X81 and am very happy with it. I bought this set for my Mom as a Christmas present.

The CN36X81 does not have a Moire problem but this set does. That is the only problem I have noticed. I am going to try and have this fixed. Toshiba supposedly has a solution for this. Even so, this set has an outstanding picture.
