It is my understanding that Aiwa is partly owned by Sony, for this particular model I paid what would have cost almost double for the equivlent sony, knowing that what I have is equal to Sony, having Dobly Digital and 2 optical outputs. Put this scream machine with the right set of speakers and I challenge anyone with a reciever under $500.00 to compete with my Aiwa. I give it 5 stars!

Strength:

I like the face and the lcd display, sound is clear.

Weakness:

120 watts per ch. is NOT TRUE!,video out on each input does not work, power is weak and distorted after 21 it blinks and shuts down. cd input weak and has no phazing (mono)

Power is weak it is equivalent to 25 watt peak before unit shuts down after 21 is flashing. Those video input has output connectors that does not work. Im confused with the feature ex: cd v1 or v2 or v3, what is that for? Surround speakers works like mini head phone, where is the 120 watts per channel they claiming... Im thinking of cuuting the amp out put and use my old sansui dc9090 with real power? Remote is big but I can live with it? What drives me crazy is the luck of true wattage... what Im getting is about 25 watt p/ch (front/peak), and 1 watt (rear/peak) center is 10 watt max, subwooper output is okey. I made my own subwooper and plug into the back..Im using a JBL speaker and 100 watt center speaker, with 60 watt each rear speaker. When I play louder than 21... it blinks and shuts down? Well these is better than my new bought Harman Kardom AV100 (from oxnard outlet) it conk on me after few hours, safety relay never did each job. My aiwa safety relay works fine. Anybody can tell me whats wrong with the amplifier...Anyone from Aiwa here...?

Strength:

bang for buck, dolby digital

Weakness:

remote, user interface

I bought this receiver because it was priced right for me ($275 at Wards) and the features seemed liked they'd be nice to have.
Different sound fields, an adjustable EQ, dolby digital, good power output. So what went wrong? Being able to use the features without having a doctorate in inefficiency. Gosh, none of the tweaking is allowed at the unit itself. The remote has to be used and it's a very w i d e and unwisely laid out remote. For home theater you as a user would want to easily tweak the system to suit your setup and the Aiwa av75 isn't built for it. Even if you wanted to *plug and play* the thing you wouldn't get very far without realizing the remote sucked.
A pet peeve is the unit not having an extra outlet plug so that as you turned on the reciever it could power your sub or CD disc changer.

I returned the AV-75 and got the Sony
STR-DE635 at a different store. Same price, equal or more features, but easily tweakable.

This unit has some nice sound fields, but it is hard to tune and adjust with the remote, they need to put the adjustments on the unit. It has good sound and power, put it with some good speakers and it is a good general purpose unit.

Strength:

Lots of features for cheap receiver. Dolby Digital if it works. supposedly 120x5

Weakness:

Does not sound like 600 watt receiver. Horrible after listening to other receivers. Fryed on me. Doesn't work anymore. No DTS. Too cheap. You get what you pay for. made by Aiwa. No good customer service. Aiwa is not a receiver company. Sound quality is low end. There is probably more.

This is just a follow up review after many long months of not posting anything. The receiver fryed on me only after about 1 month. It trys to turn on but auto shuts off. Power supply of amp issue. Not worth a dollar if it doesn't work. That is just what it comes down too. I realized after looking at other receivers, that it wasn't that special anyway. Couldn't compare to anything a little higher priced. I was just newer to home theater when I first bought it and didn't know any better.

Strength:

I like the entire model as a whole. I have only listened to the tv playing my dreamcast, but for Christmas I hope to get a dvd player. I hope it sounds good on the dvd.

Weakness:

The power. 600 watts? You have to turn the volume to like 14-18 to sound reasonable. The sub is almost non existint while on my model the t-bass does nothing and the sub rattles

I need help with this thing. If you have answers, email me. First of the t-bass button doesn't work at all. When I went to walmart the other day they had an Aiwa minisystem (model?) that I messed around with. The t-bass worked on it and the subwoofer blasted. The exact opposite on mine. The speakers emerse you wonderfully though, making up for some of the flaws. Someone please help me with the flaws!!!! Does this unit sound good with a dvd player? cd player? on anything else? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

My old kenwood prologic receiver crapped out. So I bought this aiwa from a local store for $219, and got the $79 speaker set from onsale. I was impressed by both the sound from the passive subwoofer and the AC-3 from my dxr3 card. The unit is well worth it. I love the multifunction remote control, it works well with my old cd changer (the original remote control died a year ago). The only drawback I see with the unit is that the heat sink on the power supply (not the amps) runs really hot.

Strength:

Great price!

Weakness:

Worst remote I've seen for a receiver.

I got this system at SEARS as part of a home theater package for $499. I was impressed by how much this deal had to offer: DD, Pro Logic, etc. I had a relatively painless installation, although the manual could use a little work. So far, I have nothing but praise for the actual unit and speakers. It is an awesome theater system, and it's got more than enough power to handle anything you dish out at it.

My only gripe is the remote. Oh my God, what a waste of plastic! For starters, it's awkward, too wide and does not have enough buttons (about 60%+ of its surface is bare). Another thing is there is a serious lack of control options. There is no mute button, the interface is clunky, and everytime I want to rewind and then raise the volume I have to go through at least 4 steps! What's worse, the remote doesn't recognize my TV which is a pretty common brand.

I went to the AIWA homepage and saw a picture of the system and it showed a pretty cool remote on it. I am trying to get AIWA to explain to me why I got such a crappy remote and maybe they'll send me the one from the picture. It's worth a try, right? :)

Strength:

price, 600 watt (120x5). AC3 for the money. Around 200 or less.

Weakness:

The volume control blinks after 21 in Dolby Surround modes. I hope this is just a safety feature like Aiwa says, but Aiwa doesn't seem to know much about their products. It really isn't much of a problem though.

120X5 receiver w/Dolby Digital Decoder. Bass and BBE(treble) controls. There is an EQ with some presets for music and you can also customize your own settings. The reveiver puts out a lot of power for the price. The main thing that got me is the cost for a receiver w/AC3. There are 2 optical and 1 COAX. digital outs. Lots of different features. The price is unbelievable.

Strength:

Cheap Dolby Digital

Weakness:

Kind of a big one (read below)

I have had this receiver for a while now, and I am commenting on one of it's features that do not take full advantage of Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. This receiver cannot decode the 96khz sampling rate that other receivers can do. It only decodes things at a 48khz sampling rate, which means that it downmixes most of your DVDs to PCM, which reduces the dynamic range. Kinda sucks, now you know, the more money you pay, the better product you get!
