Strength:

Clear sound, good display, handles component video, lots of inputs and outputs, built-in DTR decoding

Weakness:

Will only switch inputs/no conversion ability, remote is good but not compatible with RCA satellite remote. Can't tune radio from remote.

This receiver replaced my old 2-channel setup (Proton amp and tuner). I'm impressed with the clarity of the sound in 2-channel stereo: this unit is as good as my Proton for 2-channel music.

The display is easy to read across the room and the on-screen menu works well also. The all-channel stereo dsp mode is pleasant -- provides a lot of ambiance without being too affected. I don't have much use for the other dsp modes. The ability to attach listening mode presets to each input makes it fairly easy to setup.

The only disapointment is not specific to this receiver: the DTR7.1 doesn't convert between signal formats it just switches them. I'd really love to have the ability to connect only digital inputs from my DVD and DSS systems and have the DTR7.1 convert to analog output for recording on my VCR or legacy analog tape deck. It would also be nice to leave my TV set to component video-in and have the DTR7.1 convert s-video to component for output. Not a big deal but it would greatly simplify wiring and connections if it worked that way.

The remote is very good but I no longer use it. My RCA DSS system remote is not compatible with the DTR remote. The DTR won't learn from it (immediatly gives the "FULL" message when I try). The other thing about the remote that isn't clear from the reviews is that it has no preset codes (except for onkyo devices). You have to teach it everything.

There is one last thing I don't understand: the manual says that you should not assign a digital input to more than one input source. Does anyone know why? My DVD player is also my CD player and I'd like to assign the TOS-link output of the DVD player to both the DVD and CD. Instead I have to use up a coax digitial input for the CD player -- seems wasteful.

I have had this receiver for almost a year now.Everytime I listen to it I am amazed at the clarity of the sound,it blows the Yamaha I had away.I checked some Yamaha`s that were in the same price range when I had bought the Integra and it blew those away too.I would buy it again if it were stolen or destroyed ,I am still in awe of this receiver.

Well I have only had this thing a few days now. All I can say is that it is an amazing receiver!!!! I have a limited budget and after hours and ours of research on this site I had it down to 2 choices. The DTR 7.1 and he Sherwood Newcastle 956. I decided to go with this one because I offered me the extra features like THX and 7.1 channel expansion. I have over 400 cd's that I just stopped listening to because of my JVC 1028VBK quality was just not there. It's like I have my whole CD collection back folks! If anyone gets a chance to buy this thing under $1000 grab it! Thats all for now.

Strength:

Remote, Decoding, power, warranty, build quality, sound, osds, menus. Review is on 7.2

Weakness:

Onkyo drives the Integra line through audio/HT specialty shops only. While this helps attach "cache" to the line - it hurts price shopping ability.

After extensive comparison - technical, sound, price and features, I found the Integra 7.2 unbeatable at this price.

Way more power than I need for HT applications.

The 7.2 is virtually identical to the 7.1 with addition of DPLII

Strength:

6 Channels, All current formats including Pro Logic II and DTS Discrete, Clarity, Extremely "tweakable", Plenty of A/V inputs, 3 yr warranty, THX certification.

Weakness:

No upgradability like the DTR 9.1.

This is actually a review for the DTR 7.2. Since the specs are almost identical to the 7.1 and there is no section for the 7.2 I thought I'd might as well post my review here.

The 7.2 is bar none the best reveiver I've owned. Its sound is solid and clean and it doesn't malfunction like the HK I owned previously. While looking for a replacement for my broken AVR-500, I looked at the Denon 3801, some Yamaha models, the Onkyo TX-DS797 and the 7.2. The 7.2 simply had more to offer and sounded much cleaner than all of the above, with the possible exception of the 797. As far as features it has everything one could need for now and the foreseeable future - at least until Dolby brings out 10.2 for the home!!

As far as I can tell the 7.2 is essentially the same receiver as the Onkyo 797 just with a more refined look and, more importantly, a 3 year warranty rather than the one year that comes with the 797. The 3 year warranty combined with its abundance of features was enough to persuade me to pay the extra money for the 7.2 over the 797. So far I have not been disappointed. I have watched Pearl Harbour and Planet of the Apes so far and the 7.2 had no problem keeping up, it quite simply encompassed my room with every detail, boom, thud and explosion. Dialogue also came through especially clear. I've dreamed of owning the Integra 9.1 or a top of the line B&K, but with sound this good for $1200, I simply can't justify the extra cost, even if I did have the money!

Unlike previous receivers I've owned this unit will be in my shelf for a lot longer than 18 months. Top marks all around. A great buy for the serious Home Theater user that doesn't have $2000-$3000 to spend on a receiver. I only wish I could keep upgrading it as new surround formats are released.

Strength:

A lot of hook-up options, clean power and learning remote.

Weakness:

Took a while to learn the many options and set up.

This receiver is one of the best that you can get for the $. Other receivers that I looked at were Denon 3801,Sony 444es and Nad. I found this receiver had every thing that I was looking for. Many options for various hook-up RCA,S-Video,Digital & component. The unit has Six 100 -watts per channel amplifers. This baby rocks. In fact I over powered the front left and right speakers and smoked them (Energy Encor 2's) Which were rated 125 Watts. It has a Zone 2 output which allowes you to listen to another source in stereo without another Amp. This is great if you what to say watch a movie in the main area of the house and listen to the cd player while cleaning the yard. The remote control that comes with the 7.1 is a learning remote. You can program the IR of other remotes into the 7.1 remote. The wife loved this because she can now see the top of the table again. You can store all other IR remotes. I placed them in the cabinet next to each unit that they control, just incase the 7.1 remote was not near-by the original could still be used. The way my system is set up you can control some of the functions from by back yard. This is where zone 2 is for my application. The unit has many options THX Sourround-EX,Dolby Digital, DTS-EX Matrix,Pro Logic, All Channel Stereo and a RS232 terminal that I was told it could be used to upgrade for example Pro Logic II. I just watched Pearl Harbor on DVD and this was a great test for the sound. It performed flawless. The unit is a bit heavy approximately 40 lbs., but you have got to put all these great functions some place. I did a lot of reading of reviews and this was a highly rated reciever. I glad that this is the one I picked.

Top end

Loking to upgrade my Sony ES, I brought home a Denon 3801 which sounded great but magnetically discolored my TV screen and the 7.1. Side to side, the Denon had much better detail in surround. In fact, the Integra's attempt to provide a detailed sound made the high frequencies sound forced and tinny out of my Tannoy speakers. My wife and I both said "no thanks". I bought a Marantz SR-19. Now I've got the most natural sounding system and a joy to watch movies with. Take some time to buy what suits your other equipment.

Strength:

powerful unit. lots of options: thx, dts-es, dolby digital and a nice amount of inputs. smooth volume control. easy set-up.

Weakness:

huge remote. popping when switching sources. osd menu difficult to figure out. heats up quickly.

overall, i've been very happy with the unit. a few small difficulties as mentioned above. i love all of the options for dvd's. it has them all and decodes smoothly. it's a powerful unit, a fine argument for avoiding seperates. it's got a lot of little features that make it a pleasure to own: dimmer, lit back remote and s-video in front. there are plenty of inputs along with a couple of digital outputs- great for minidisc recording.

sounds incredible, remote, pretty easy to set up

Weakness:

manual instuctions were kind of weak

This receiver blows my Yamaha away.I really liked my Y amaha until I heard the DTR 7.1 ,I was kind of worried about the music not sounding too good from other reviews I had read ,but found the music to sound really good after adjusting the bass and treble a little. With my Yamaha I had to eq the hell out of it to get it to sound anywhere near as good as the DTR7.1 and even then it didn`t sound half as good as this receiver does. The Yamaha was a good receiver and I never had any problems with it ,I just like the Integra alot more .I was kind of concerned with what I had been readig about the receiver running hot,but I haven`t had any problems it stays really cool .I love this receiver and don`t plan on having to upgrade again for quite some time
