Strength:

Lots of Power, high current amp, 5 ch stereo, Onkyo quality construction and sound! Brilliant Learning remote control.

Weakness:

Must turn way up to get reference level sounds! Sub output is a bit weak!

I was initially impressed with the sound quality with the new onkyo x version, but I was disappointed at the level on the master volume if you want your speakers on really loud. My earlier Yamaha models and most receivers need to only be turned up to 10 o clock postion to be loud. The onkyo must be turned up almost to the max. Although sound quality is excellent and playback in all surround modes are exceptional. I really enjoyed the 5 channel stereo feature. A great value for the $500 price range. And make sure you get the 575x.... the newer model....it has s-video inputs, binding posts for all channels, and two optical and coaxial inputs.

Strength:

Clean, crisp sound, very user friendly, 5 channel stereo and the remote

Weakness:

A lil expensive

For those of you out there who are looking for a reciver with alot of features and inputs, and still want excellent sound and value, this is the reciever for you. It may be a little on the expensive side, but it is definately worth it. This is my first reciver, but i've set up many others and use them, and i love music (i play guitar) and i'm only 15 years old. This reciever has many features - and 70 watts/channel is more than enough power (i listen to music loud so 70 watts/channel is definately more than enough). It has no distortion when you turn it up loud and a cleaner sound than an alpine car stereo sound. It also has 5 channel stereo which lets you drive 5 speakers at once fer normal listening (aka cds, radio). It is very user friendly and for a device with so many features, it is easy to set up using the manual. My VCR sounds great through it. I have no DVD yet :-(... i am working on it so i can't tell you how Dolby Digital or DTS works yet... i will post a follow up review when i get one. The remote works like a charm. It lights up in the dark when you press a button and it can also use its "Learn" capibility to operate any of your other electronics. Works awesome.

I considered buying the SONY STR-DE545 or the Kenwood VR-407, and i read reviews on this site and did some research for about 3 weeks. Those recievers are good and may have alot of features, but quality and sound wise... they are not even in the same class as onkyo, and not nearly as easy to use. This reciever may be on the expensive side, but it is well worth the money. For those of you who want a great home theater reciever, but don't want to spend alot for high-end mahcines, this is the one for you. I didn't originally like onkyo, but i listened to this one and i couldn't find another reciever that compared to this one. Excellent Reciever - Two Thumbs up.

If you are looking for a reciever and are unsure of what to get, contact me @ cmsx@home.com and i will give you any advice i can.

Strength:

great sound when it works

Weakness:

Very poor customer service and faulty chip design

Bought a 575 at Christmas and had a bad unit right out of the box. C>C> replaced it with a new unit and it lasted about 6 mo. before it developed intermittent sound. It has now been in an "authorized service center" for over 6 weeks and they are still waiting for a new processor chip...this after replacing a IC board. Onkyo/usa has yet to answer my numerous e-mails to complain...I can only assume that they don't have a customer service department of they just don't care about their products. I should have gone with Outlaw or Marantz. Iwant to send it back and get a refund, but you can't unless their customer service ok's it first. Generally they have good quality products, which is why i chose it...but now i am paing with a major headache!!

Strength:

Learning remote. Plenty of inputs and outputs

Weakness:

None

I first purchased TX-DS 484 and returned it for the
TX-DS 575X. What a diffrence for the extra $150.00. The learning remote is the first plus and very easy to program. Setting up the speaker size and distance was very straight forward
There is also plenty of inputs and outputs to satisfy almost everyone. The A/V receiver is connected to a Sony DVP-S560D DVD player, and Polk RM6200 surround sound speakers. DVD's and tapes come alive. The system sound is very clean even at high decibel levels. 5 DSP modes, Dolby Pro-Logic and DTS decoder. A Re-EQ Cinema Re-equalization circuit to take the "brightness" out of the sound, compensating the sound intended for theaters. The A/V receiver with its many features will not be outdated for quite a while.

Strength:

Great stereo sound. Tons of features, like the five channels
stereo. DTS and DD decoder built in. Good honest selection of DSP. Solid built.

Weakness:

I am too dumb for the smart remote that comes with the machine

Good honest AV amp. for HT beginner, with enough power to make great action movie comes alive. Good stereo sound too, but not as good as my old Denon amp, maybe it needs a little bit more time for the Onkyo to 'burn in', for the transformer to settle down. The five channels stereo is fantastic for back ground music.
The Onkyo amp. is also future proof, you can add external decoder later if you want. Perhaps the Onkyo people can make an external THX decoder for this machine.
However, on screen display would be useful and a pre-out to an external power amp. would be use nice, if one wish to increase the power of this already fantastic machine.

Strength:

Great sound, ease of use, very good remote, binding posts on all channels, 5 channel stereo, great value.

Weakness:

Nothing so far.

I've had the 575x for 3 weeks now, and it is terrific. I had purchased a Yamaha HTR-5250 from Sears first. The Yama was good on Dolby Digital, but I didn't care for it when listening to tv stations--it lacked the 5 channel stereo feature. Also I hated the Yama remote--just awful. I also hated that it didn't have binding posts on all speakers. It was powerful, and had a lot of options, but that wasn't as important to me. SOmething about the Yama just didn't excite me--maybe the sound, maybe its features, I don't know, but the Onkyo just seems like a more substantial unit.

The Onkyo is just such a solid all around value. For me, its 70 watt rating was a concern, but not anymore. It easily powers 2 pairs of JBL HLS610, and an S center speaker with ease. Having a sub also probably helps take away some of the burden. I cranked music in 5 channel stereo for about 3 hours, and it didn't get more than warm.

Setup was easy, though I want to tweak it some more. The manual was also easy to read. The remote is great, simple and well laid out, and it is learning, which will be great to consolidate all of my others, plus it can learn 8 macro functions which is also a nice feature.

The Dolby Digital is very good, and the sound really makes dvds come alive. Watched Scream 3 the other night, and the voices just seemed to come from everywhere. The followup trailers had an interview with Wes Craven, and he sounded like he was right in front of me. Credit the JBLs too.

I use the coaxial connection to a Sony c660 dvd player and sound is very good. The 575x has to be one of the best values out there. Very hard to find all of these features in a good sounding, straight forward to use receiver for this price. Separates would be nice, but not in the budget now. If $ is an issue, you can't do better than this receiver.

Also Yawaaudio.com was easy to work with, great service, backs up the 2 year warranty with a new model if anything should go wrong. All is all, I am very happy with this unit, and recommend it to everyone. Happy listening.

This is a great product from Onkyo. It was easy to setup and the sound is excellent. I have a KLH 6 speaker set and my home theater is complete. Movies seem even better than in the theater since the sound is so close to you. The smart remote is easy to program and contols everthing in my house (TV, DVD, VCR, CBL BOX). I am so happy I made the right decision and bought the Onkyo TX-DS575x.

Strength:

Very awesome remote. No distortion at all. Great sound.

Weakness:

Very heavy, guess it needs to be with the heatsink it has.

Just bought it last night. I put on Toy Story (because of the kids) and noticed an immediate difference in sound quality. I have been putting off buying a receive because I wanted the biggest baddest, and it had to be Onkyo because I had a 717 for many years, several moves, and no issues. Even playing the radio sounds cleaner. The remote was actually easy to use, even though it has a thousand buttons on it. I'm sure I'll love it even more as the time goes on. (that 787 sure was nice looking, but couldn't squeeze the extra 300 to get it).

I'm using NHT speakers across the front. NHT Dipoles in the rear, and NHT Sub (10 Inch). Over all, it is a great system.

Great Sound! DTS/DD,Remote,Build Quality

Good purchase. Paid more then I had to for this unit. Letsgodigital.com has the unit for $324.00 plush shipping. The only drawback is Letsgodigital is not an authorized reseller for Onkyo. On Onkyo's home page and Yamaha if I may add, if the unit is purchased from an unauthorized retailer, the warranty will not be honored. Checking all the Authorized retailers, the best deal was picking this unit up from a local store and having the option of a same day return if necessary.

As far as the unit goes, I have had no issues. Setup is easy. Sound is clear and wonderful. The connections on the back are plentiful for your average user. All analog sources sound good. All digital sources also sound good. Even the digital cable (only get digital on digital channels. In my area, the first 85 or so channels are analog and the remaining 125 or so are digital). The thing that surprised me the most was the ease and performance of the remote control. I also purchase a Sony RM2100 during the same time (ecost.com $102.00). The remote layout is hard to beat. Not to mention that it is slim and a perfect ergonomic fit, Backlit and extremely easy to teach. There are no factory codes from non-Onkyo products. You have to teach the function from one remote to another. This may seem troublesome or lengthy, but its not. I was able to teach 6 other remotes in 45 min. To the credit of the rm2100, teaching is also easy. What I did not like is the layout for a few components, mainly the AV receiver (AMP). You could program non used buttons to do for example, change DSP modes, but since the 575x remotes does the same thing, buttons properly label and a hell of a lot smaller, not to mention it comes with he 575x, why spend the extra $$$ on a universal remote. The 575x is well worth the money. Happy listening.

Strength:

Clean and crisp sound, build quality, 5-Ch Stereo et all.

Weakness:

Inability to use DSP when B Speakers are on, a few functions are not controllable on the Remote

This is a Fabulous Reciever. Before purchasing this piece, I compared it to a large selection of products in a similar price range and much higher - nothing comes close in terms of quality or features.
Music handling is budget audiophile level, DD & DTS are also excellent. DSP modes are not gimicky, but exceptionally well executed, 5Ch stereo mode does not introduce any unwanted echo/distortion but cleanly distributes sound across all 5 channels while retaining stereo imaging.
Maintians clarity even when pushed to maximum volume. You do need efficient speakers to produce high volume bass, as this receiver tends to be a teensy bit light on the bass side.
I highly recommend this receiever to anyone who is particular about the quality of their music reproduction, but also wants to enjoy HT through the same system.
