Strength:
Power. Adaptability. Clean sound.
Weakness:
I'd like to be able to easily adjust the subwoofer level from the remote. I have had the RXV 1200 for a week now and I have to say that I am more than satisfied. Ample power, clean sound, and eminently tweakable. For example, even though my center speaker uses the same driver components as my main speakers, it has always sounded a little brighter and more foreward. With the RXV 1200 I was able to equalize the frequency response on the center speaker and even "move" it back a couple of feet. Now the front speakers are seamless - especially important for music listening. This is only an example. It seems that just about every aspect of this receiver can be custom adjusted to match the room and speakers. Takes some time, but it's worth it. BTW, the default settings seem to be as good as anything else I've heard, so don't be put off if you're not a "tweaker"! Strength:
Clean, powerful, smooth transients. Nice styling, Pro-logic II, very good sound staging and dynamic range, build quality, remote control . I don't regret the choice and would recommend this receiver to anybody.
Weakness:
Binding posts are too close together and somewhat "flimsy". This is a review for the RX-V2200, which is not listed in this space. I upgraded from an old Kenwood Dolby digital 5.1 surround system, I couldn't tune it to my ears. I shopped around (for 2 months), checked out reviews and listened to various systems such as Denon AVR-3802 which I find a little too warm although it has features like dual outputs for back centers, multi room output assignment, and so on. The Denon was my first choice. I tested the Denon with Klipsch SF2 towers, SC1 Center and SB2 backs. The only thing I dislike about the Klipsch speakers, but than again my listening room is square and medium sized, is that they are too directional in the way that if you move over a bit you won't hear audio the same way from one seat spot to another. But the fidelity and dynamics are superb when matched to the Denon. Then I tried the Onkyo TX-DS797 and tested it with the same Klipsch speakers and the sound output was way too clear to a point where it annoyed my ears (even if I took out a bit of Treble), the combination made audio too clear and crisp so I tried different brand name speakers and still again I didn't like the high pitch and crisp sound. Also the Onkyo doesn't have B speaker amplified outputs. So I went to this store a friend had recommended and they had the Yamaha RX-V2200. I tested it head to head with the Denon 3802 switching back and forth and switching speakers around and found the Yamaha more pleasing to my ears than the Denon, it was some sort of in between with the Onkyo and Denon. Then the rep. told me that it is basically priced at the same price level as the Denon AVR-3802, but it so happened they had a promo on the RX-V2200 priced at the same price as the RX-V1200 which made it $500 canadian cheaper than the Denon. So in the end the choice was simple for three reasons: build quality (and sound), price and service. The remote is easy to use and yet compatible with all my audio and video devices, the receiver is feature rich and versatile and the sound quality very impressive (I'm still impressed after 2 months use). My system now consists of: JBL Fronts (very old models but now sound better like they have never sounded before) Paradigm Mini Monitors V.2 Back Paradigm CC-370 Center Yamaha RXV-2200 Receiver JVC XV-S500BK DVD Monster Cable speaker wires Monster Interconnects Similar Products Used: Denon AVR-3802, Onkyo TX-DS797, Harman Kardon AVR520 |

Strength:
remote, looks
Weakness:
can't reproduce natural sound Ok for home theater, but has a long way to go for music. The voices during movies is way to low and bassy, this reciever doesn't produce clean sounds. It is way to loud and boomy. I am going to look for something else. Not sure what else though. |

Strength:
Powerful, good remote
Weakness:
not clean sounding, had problems with sound. I got this reciever, and played with it a bit. It's a ok reciever, not a very attractive one but has some great features. My problem though, was it would cause my speakers to hiss like crazy, and there would be a crackling sound from my speakers at about -40 volume. It's good for home theater, but for music, it is certainly lacking. Very boomy and bassy, thus not a very natural sounding reciever. I took it back for the marantz SR 7200, although not quite as bassy, it is way cleaner sounding. don't get me wrong, my father-in-law has a yamaha RX-V992 and I have a yamaha cd player, so I do love yamaha. I also tried the yamaha RX-V2200. Very good but still not as clear and clean as the marantz. I have heard the denons, harman kardons, yamaha's, onkyo's, NAD's, Integra's and I would have to rate marantz as number 1, then NAD, then yamaha, then harman kardon. Casual Listener
Strength:
Everything.....Not ONE damn disappointment in this purchase!!!!
Weakness:
...I now need to upgrade my speakers.... WOW!!!! I tripped over this thing!!! I was going to go with the Pioneer 711...what a mistake that would've been!!! The sound clarity and tweakability really have me enthused!! I'm currently a 'casual listener', but have now determined myself to become a certified AUDIOPHILE! I'm still trying to figure out all of the remote's capabilities, but that will come in time (noting the 'bugs' in previous reviews. I was 1st amiss by the 80wpc...but that hesitation passed as soon as I listened to a few RUSH selections as well as 5th Element, scene 15 (a MUST for surround sound enthuesiasts!). The connections------!!!!! I don't know how I'm going to afford it, but eventually, I WILL find enough components to fill out the backside connections!!! Strength:
Good clean sound. Power must be underrated. Remote is even better
Weakness:
one problem. I have to switch my DVD to cable satelite because my DVD has coaxial.and not toslink. I cant wait to get my new DVD player with component . I first brought this unit in December. It didnt work at all. I took it back and for a whole 3 months I could not get a unit. I got it in March and hooked It up to some celestion speaker and i thought I was in heaven. The music was very detailed and the clarity was amazing. I am middle age and listen to old R and B and jazz and felt that this unit is the best unit I ever had. I then bought some Mirage OM10'a and I thought that ernie Isley was in my living room. I finally tried it on home theater and was blwn away by Pearl Harbor and the Fast and the Ferious. My unit stolen last year in a burglary and I lost the 596. This unit kick it's butt and then some. I wanted a 100 watt per channel unit but I have yet to go pass 39 dlbs.. I adution denons and Harmon KArdons and though I feel that the Harmon had a slight edge, I am glad of the choice I madeThis unit blew away the Denon I love this reciever Similar Products Used: Sony Yamaha 596, Yamaha 490 |

Strength:
Excllent for Home Theater Nearly Excellent for straight Audio Multi-channel (5 or 6) stereo is a major plus. Ton''''s of inputs Subwoofer output does work in straight 2 channel stereo mode. May have too many adjustments, use the auto input.
Weakness:
Very Large dimensions, may not fit in many entertainment centers. Check the Component in/output''''s for out of whack Chromaince. This is a follow up report on my earlier posting. I previously reported that the Component Input/Output''''s on my new RX-V1200 were problematic. I feel the need to expound on this. Yes, my particular receiver had this problem but according to Yamaha they haven''''t heard enough complaints to make them think this is anything more than an isolated incident. Let''''s hope so as this makes the on-screen display disabled on the Component channel. You can however turn over to another input channel such as one controlled by an S-video input to get this feature to work. And it is a very slick feature that was very invaluable when doing my set-up. Some other notes 1- The Component Video output problem was related to the Y channel (Chrominance) and on my machine rendered the Chrominance throughput signal into a heavily increased signal. Making the other two channels overshadowed, so to say. According to the Tech Support E-mail (Very promptly returned) the Component Inputs from my DVD Player to my TV is a straight throughput with no signal changes. So they recommended my exchanging the unit. 2- The store I purchased this model at was more than happy to allow a 1 for 1 switch out with another model or an upgrade. The store was Tweeters, and they were very good about the whole thing. 3- Sound quality had gotten even better with the month long break in period. My current System: Yamaha RX-V1200 (Excellent) Sharp DVP-740 DVD Player (Not Recommended) Sharp S480 32" TV with component inputs (Highly Recommended for the price.) (4) JBL ND-310II Main L/R and Rear L/R (Excellent for both HT and mult-channel Stereo) JBL S Center (Excellent for HT) KLH ASW8 120 watt Subwoofer (Cheap, but handles LFE chanel OK) Acoustic Reasearch cables, 16 ga. speaker wire, S-Video and banana clip inputs. Strength:
Powerful, Refined sound, Great for movies, Price
Weakness:
None at this price I have been using this receiver for about a week now and I am very impressed with it''s capabilities. It is rated at 80WPC and it seems much more powerful than the Marantz SR6200 that I had been using for the past 5 months. The Discrete DTS-ES is a nice feature and so is the DTS NEO:6. I am also pleased to see that this receiver has Wide Bandwidth (HDTV Ready) Component Video Inputs.
