I tried this receiver this weekend ... the sound is great. I was considering upgrading from a RX-V592. I did notice an improvement in sound with the same speakers and same DVD.On the downside, I have trouble believing that Yamaha would give both a coaxial and optical input for the DVD audio but only provide a composite video for the DVD video. If you have a VCR with SVHS and have to use the composite video for the DVD, how to set up your system withn your monitor allows for SVHS (and composite)? There is a switch on the back of the unit that sets the on-screen menu for either SHVS or Composite Video. Hence, in my opinion, one is forced to downgrade to composite video for both VHS and DVD to allow simplicity of operation. As a result, I returned the RX-V795 and am waiting for the RX-V995 - same great sound, a bit more power, much better connectivity, a macro remote, and only a few hundred more. And that is my recommendation ... look at what deal can be gotten on the 995 before settling for the 795.

I called Uncle's Stereo today and 'yes' they do wish you to buy asap, however when queried about the warranty they told me 3 years (although Yamaha only has 2 yrs for parts & labour).
Any ideas from anyone who has recently purchased from Uncle's?

Cheers...

Got this recently. It is amazing. There are no words left - you have to listen it only.
By the way - does anybody here have Pioneer DV-414 connected to it? I can not make Yamaha's remote working with DVD Menu properly. Please, e-mail.

I really love the sound from this receiver. I was pleasantly surprised witht the quality of the FM tuner. This is a component that has been "cheapened" by many manufacturers. I am also using the DSP modes for movies more than I thought I would. They really do add to the movie-watching experience. I like the simple remote as long as you remember to spin the right dial. The only negative comment is the lack of sufficient S-video connections. I don't forsee needing any for quite a while. I S-video the DVD player directly to the TV and it works fine.

This receiver is an upgrade to last years model the RX-V 793. Since then, Yamaha has added DTS and 6 channel inputs. In addition, they added a slightly larger power supply to yield 5 more watts/ch and they added a new DSP processing complex that is superior to the RX-V 793. What is amazing is it has the same retail price of last year's model ($799) The only corner they cut was to put a scaled down remote in the package. I consider this no loss since you can buy the awesome backlit Marantz remote for about $100 or less.
The best thing about this receiver is it can be had for $599 !!!!

That is a whole lot of receiver for the money that no other company can match when the price/performance factor is an issue.

Just got the 795. Incredible sound and excellent features for the money. I agree with the other reviewers regarding the remote - it is kind of cheap - a surprising poor companion piece for such an elegantly designed receiver. I was looking at the Sony 925 and the lower end Sony ES units. The 795 edged out the ES and is in a totally different league from the 925.
I highly recommend the 795.

Message to GIB from Seattle:
I, along with many others, are wanting to buy this terrific receiver at a good price. But a lot of us are unsure of mail order companies like Uncle's. How was your experience with them overall? Was the receiver you received a brand new, U.S. unit? What is the warranty situation with it? Any feedback on this would be VERY appreciated by all of us.

Thanks much

Got the 795 from Uncle's Stereo for $585 plus $20 shipping. I think I got a great receiver for the $$$. The bass management is great, you can even have the bass routed to the fronts AND the subwoofer simultaneously and this works great. I am not so wild about the DSP's, but hen again I have not tried them out extensively and my rears are at ear level until I get them on stands. (Yamaha says they should be 1.8m above the floor) Was considering the HK 65, but it was about $150 more and the salesman at Uncle's said he heard both and he liked the Yamaha. He didn't say why, though. I figure I can use the savings to upgrage to a HK PA-5800 (which J&R has for $399!) and I will have this nifty thing as a DSP-Enhanced pre-amp. For now, though, its 85wx5 is doing ok with my NHT's. I give the 795 five stars (mainly for value).

just got the rx-v795. love the sound that comes from it. i just wish they had another s-video plug for dvd instead of the composite. but i worked around that by plugging my dvd directly into my tv's s-video. i think its actually better if you do that because you dont have to go through another hoop. the only thing is, you have to have a TV that has a s-video plug (mine is a mitsubishi). rx-v795 -- great sound, ok remote, great product
