I am extremely happy with the sound quality of this Receiver. But few negative thing I want to say about this receiver: 1. I try to use RCA connector input from DVD and S-video output to TV, but it didn't work and I had to choose either RCA or S-video.
2. The receiver generate a lot of head and I had to install a cooling fan on top of it.
3. The remote doesn't work in a far distance.
4. Too wide to fit into my Audio Rack and I had to put it on the TV stand.
In terms of sound quality, I give it a perfect score!!!! Check Uncle's stereo, I bought it for only $599 compare to $725 in local store. If you are going to buy it from Uncle's stereo, be prepare for it because they are very "RUDE".

My first experience with Yamaha- right channel malfunctioned (static, clipping) within 3 months. I've now been waiting for over 4 months for the part to ship in from Japan. Although the sound quality was excellent and the features per dollar are tough to beat, that kind of reliability was not what I expected from a $900 receiver. Anyone else have this kind of problem?

Hello Scott, I bought my 795 for only one month and now the internal cooling fan is not running or it never did. I put two 4" fans on top of it to cool it down temporary. I have to call Uncle's stereo soon to see what they will do.

Hey Scott, Did you make sure that your DVD is outputing DTS signal? I had the same problem on my Philips DVD 850 when I was watching Patch Adam. Then I found out I did not set up the DVD player right. Read through your manual and you may find the answer. I had to go to the set up screen and change audio output to All. All means both analog and digital. My Yamaha always auto detect the DTS signal for me.

Hi
I just bought my 795 a week ago - what a thrill. The sound is great, compared
with my old NAD AV716. The bass is more controlled, and the defenition in the
mid-range is great. The high-range has a small drawback, because the sound picture is a bit to the bright side - enhancing the hissing 'S' sound on some
bad produced CD's. But in the overall, the sound is in a quite high standard for the price. The amplifier has enough power to control difficult speakers, and can be upgraded with external amps - nice feature. In "cinema" use the sound is just great, Yamaha knows their way around sourround. Even in normal Pro Logic mode the sound is a lot better than my old NAD. The DSP has a lot of programs, most of them I haven't tested yet. The programs I have tested have far better sound, that I would expect from a product in this price-range. The reciever has a 5.1 input for an external decode, for any future upgrade. I haven't heard the DTS part yet, but I am looking forward to. The Tuner-section could have more sensitivity, but sounds good for normal use.

The speaker connections is not the best types I have ever seen, but they do the job. I wonder why there is only one COAX-digital input - for DVD, a lot of CD-player does not include optical output. Furthermore I can't see the logic in only having S-vhs connectors for a VCR - most VCR's dosen't have S-vhs connectors. The solution for this is to connect the DVD-player directly to the TV, wich also gives the best picture quality but no OSD from the reciever.

The remote has been the target for much discussion. The design is nice, but the "wheel" should have been better organized - or replaced with direct buttons. It controls most of my units, but a lerning type is to be prefered. For some reason I can't get it to control my NAD CD-Player, even though there is a code listed for NAD in the manual. I guess the best solution is to by a truely programmable remote.

I would recommend this product to the price-oriented user, with high quality demands. The drawbacks should not prevent the most user's to by this nice piece of hardware.

Lets just say I'm another happy listener. I used this site as a primary guide for receivers then let me ears decide. I was down to the 595a and 795a and went with the newer processor (Y-918). I had little trouble getting a good price. After getting an online I took this to the local goodguys and they beat the price plus i get local warranty coverage($555) I have the unit for two weeks and am still exlporing all the potential sounds. I usually use the cinema settings for movies but stay with dolby digital on TV programs. I usually have effects off for music but sometimes use dolby digital.
My System (in the works)
TV- Hitachi 35UX60B
VCR - Toshiba M-685
Speakers - Take 5 w/ e:xl-s10 sub
CD- Sony
DVD- saving

An excellent unit rating 5 speakers

I got this product for $600 five months back. You can get a better deal now. I haven't used all the features. The amplifier is really crisp both for lows and highs.
The DSP is good to experiment with.
Separate decibel control for the center and rear speakers really help. (For hearing the conversation in the movies and also if you have different set of speakers for the front and the rear).

Haha, you suckers. I got this unit with a 2 year warranty for $298.50 plus $10.50 shipping brand new. For $300 it is probably the best receiver known to man.

Strength:

Sound quality, highly configurable

Weakness:

Heat produced by unit, lack of svideo inputs, sub-out lacking in certain speaker config.

As many have stated, this is an excellent receiver. I am quite pleased with its sound quality and configuration. Both DTS (via 20bit audio DTS CDs) and Dolby Digital (via DVD) are excellent. Therefore, I will just discuss what I dislike about it.

The receiver only has svideo inputs for a vcr. Although an aux svideo input exists, I'd rather not connect my dvd to the front of the unit.

Output to a subwoofer is not sent if you set speakers to large. Sub output is sent if you set mains to large and bass output to both main and sub, output to sub is not sent if you set mains to large and bass output to sub. Center and rear speakers must be set to small for the sub to receive their output. I would prefer the ability to set any speaker to large and still be able to direct bass output to the sub.

The tuner does not seem to have the station signal strength of the adcom tuner it replaced. It is adequate though.

My equipment:
Mirage OM12 mains
Mirage OMC2 center
Mirage OMR2 surrounds
Mirage BPS150i sub
Yamaha CDC-765 cd changer
Yamaha DVDS795 dvd player
Nakamichi DR-3 tape deck
