Strength:

Very good color rendition. Good image clarity. Audio quality. AND ZERO PAUSE AT DUAL LAYER TRANSITION!!!

Weakness:

Horizontal lines throughout image. Muddy, blotchy shadow detail. Lip sync problem (sound is approx 4 frames late)

I was impressed with this player until I noticed the lips-ync problem. It's definitely there. Try watching Jrassic park. Note the cut to Hammond's helicopter as it comes in for a landing as Dr. Satler walks up the hill. Sound and picture should cut simultaneously. Listen carefully as we see the helicopter, then hear the Helicopter perspective change a beat later. Unacceptable.

The picture and color are good, but on my 60" rear-projection TV (in essence a magnifying glass), horizontal lines are visible throughout the picture, especially in solid color fields like a red wall.

The best feature on this player is by far the 4MB buffer which eliminates the pause at the dual-layer transition. Very impressive, but useless to someone who wants a crystal clear picture and perfect sync.

By the way, the first one I bought came out of the box broken. The second one was returned for a refund.

Strength:

Ability to play CD-Rs very well; Most excellent video quality

Weakness:

None, really

I have to agree with Blackie. This machine works just fine. I think too many bad reviews come from knee-jerk reactions from singular bad experiences, and don't reflect the machine's true ability at all. I, too, get sucked into reading user's horror stories, but I've tested this machine on certain dvds that have given many users problems only to find that it's most likely the fault of a shoddy digital transfer, and not the player. It's like the early days of CD music, when old discs were transferred without being remastered first. They sometimes sounded worse than their vinyl counterparts, and the same goes for movies! You can't go back in time to make an old recording better; you can only try to enhance what is already there. Even some of the new movies look bad, and I think technology has a long way to go before the digital transfer process is perfected. If this player is on your short list, don't hesitate, especially if you have any burned CDs. This machine plays every one in my collection. Try that with a Sony! Don't get me wrong; the Sony's a great machine too, but for me, I didn't want to have to buy a CD player as well.

Strength:

Good Specs and every sort of output possible.

Weakness:

......Lip synch!

The lip synch on this machine is embarrassing! I bought new surround speakers at the same time and was stoked to finally have a home theater. Had some friends over to watch The Matrix and had to turn it off. I returned it and picked up the same model, assuming that I just had a bad unit, but, the new unit had the same problem on Jurrassic Park. I contacted a Denon Service Center via e-mail to find out if there was a remedy and they indicated that they were not aware of any problems or available upgrades to fix the problem. I'm giving it one star because there is nothing lower. There is no point in owning this machine.

Strength:

Good (not great) sound quality, better build quality than most, looks

Weakness:

severe lip-synch problem, remote is terrible, flimsy and slow drawer, very poor quality menus, no screen saver, shuts off after sitting idle for 30 minutes, poor picture quality

Well now, I have always thought of Denon to be a company that produces very high quality units. I , however was extremely dissapointed in this unit. Several of the movies I watched durin the week I owned this unit had really bad lip-synch problems. ( Booty Call, Hurricane, Deuce Bigalow, Out of Sight...Booty Call having one scene almost a full second off!!!!) To me this is ABSOLUTELY unacceptable. Also during a scene in Deuce Bigalow, there is really bad pixelization: the wall in the background has large squares on the wall in the background. The menus in this player look like they should be on a $200 Panasonic, Even the menus on the Panasonic DVD RV-30 look like a million bucks compared to this sloppy nonsense. The remote on this unit is just plain silly. You almost need a pencil to push the tiny buttons. I don't know if I got a bad unit or what but this is just ridiculous for a $400 unit. I bought this player to upgrade from my Proscan, guess what. I downgraded. I have a Sony DVP-S7700 now. Look for my review on that coming soon.

My system consists of:
Onkyo TX-DS575 Receiver
Sony DVP-S7700 DVD player
B&W 602s2 Mains
B&W LCR6s2 Center
B&W ASW-1000 Sub
Boston Acoustics T830 Surround (soon to be B&W)
Maganavox 27" (upgrading soon also)

Strength:

Good CD Sound and Picture

Weakness:

sound doesn't sync

Purchased the DVD-1000 today and it's going back tomorrow. I can't believe Denon continues to sell a DVD player that syncs this badly. I read the reviews and thought that maybe I would be lucky and get one with the "updated chip" thats supposed to fix the problem because I wanted good CD sound as well as good DVD playback. Obviously I didn't an updated model or there's no such thing. If you buy one, get the Gladiator disk and go to scene 19. Watch as he sticks his sword into the sand. I bet you take it back the next day too.

Strength:

Solid drive mechanism, excellent sound and video reproduction, simplicity of layout and use.

Weakness:

None to mention.

Have been very impressed with the performance of this Denon DVD-1000 and its beautiful pictureon my big screen TV.
So far I have not been able to replicate any of the lip sync problems that I hear some have been able to note. I have tried many DVD's both purchased and rented but have yet to find this flaw with this player. Have experienced some of the lip sync problems that have been reported with the Sony s365. I kept that player for one week before returning it.

Weakness:

lip-synch

Purchased player last week at Sears for a fantastic price. However, i began to see the lip-synch problems as previously mentioned. Instead of returning to Denon, i'll go back to my 2 year old Toshiba. The Denon has superb audio and average video. Misson Impossible II uncovered the worst lip-synch.

Strength:

Too many but picture reproduction is intense.

Weakness:

Not a one.

I've been very impressed with the DVD-1000 beginning from day one. Actually that's not true. At fist I made the mistake of using an old S-video cable that I had used with my old VCR. The picture was horrible and at fist I blamed it on the DVD-1000 but after figiting with the hookup, I quickly realized I had an interconnect problem instead. Ran out and got a new set of Monstor cables and have been impressed since using them. I can't believe how great the picture and sound truly are! This is my first DVD player and I chose it on the strengths that many of your reviews
gave it. Thanks to all of your effort and time spent reviwing this one.
