Strength:
Easily configured to play VCD''s plays CD-R and CD-RW. Firmware updates are readily available on the web or via the ORITRON website. To allow MP3 compatibility. The player can also be easily hacked. Not only to select all regions, but also individual regions can be set. It is not a no region player, it is multiregion.
Weakness:
LED light on all the time - Not a problem in the UK almost all outlets come with a switch. And for the US would it really hurt to get up and un plug the thing. Other weaknesses are the locking of the drive bay and small amount of heat and drive noise. Sounds like all the other reviewers had a really bad experience with ORITRON macines. I found mine to have no problems. I have used the machine in the US and in Europe. At the time of purchasing a region hack was available via the ORITRON website. Now in my book any company that actively helps to overcome the unashamed profiteering of the movie distibutors is OK by me. I have had a few problems with locking of the drive but this is far outwighed by the ease with which the palyer can be hacked. Plus, although it is an ''always on'' supply, no converter is needed at all. THe player works in all counties at all domestic supply voltages. Overall at the time of purchase the ORITRON 100 was less than 1/2 the price of all other DVD players and offered similar features. It palys dual layer disks fine. And particularly data intense discs such as the mummy and the matrix. The only disc that won''t play so far is Proof of Life, and i count that a s a blessing. Although at the time the oritron was good value with cheaper more reputable compnies producing budget players i''d have to say I''d probably choose them over ORITRON. But still I''m happy with my purchase. Similar Products Used: RCA, GOODMANS, JVC and PANASONIC dvd players. |

Weakness:
Very low quality - not worth buying at any price The DVD worked for a couple of weeks before I had a problem. The sound does not work at all now, only a squealing noise can be heard. I also did not like the fact that the power LED light is always on and very bright. My opinion is to STAY AWAY from these DVD players and choose a slightly higher priced but quality one that plays all types of DVD and CD''s. |

I picked up one of these refurbed from a local liquidation outlet last December. Price was right - and I figured it was going to be a real cheap unit from the get go. Here''s the kicker - you can make these units actually work! This model has a power supply that never really shuts down - It''s a 25 watt assembly that is in constant stand-by mode. This type of power supply generates a substancial amount of heat. When the unit is in use, the heat level rises as the drive is also generating a fair bit of heat. Combine this with the apalling lack of ventilation - you will guarantee a heat generated failure every time. This is why these units take a dump so quickly. The fix is fairly simple. This modification requires some soldering so if you are unsure of what to do - then don''t. 1) remove the top cover. 2) the case is a generic. Look at the back chassis cover, you will noticed that it was prepunched for other outputs that are never used. The back of the unit is covered just a thin plastic lable stuck on the the back of this generic chassis. Using an exacto knife, cut out the plastic cover to expose the holes. Trimming all the holes out will dramatically increase the air flow that the unit desperately needs. 3)You''ll need to add a small 12v fan, approx 1 inch in diameter. You can solder the ground and the power to a set of small pads on the right of the drive. The main power supply connects to the board via these pads. There a couple of pads - use DGND and 12V. Just add an extra drop or two of solder onto these pads. Then solder the ground wire to DGND and the power to 12v. 4) You want to mount the fan on the right hand rear corner of the unit. Using a hot glue gun you can glue the fan to the mainboard. Don''t worry about the fan shorting out any circuitry as the board has no active circuits in the position I have suggested you mount the fan in. Once this is done, and the fan is secure, replace the top cover. The fan will only be on when the unit is in use. And your failure rate will drop dramatically. |

Strength:
Apparently good as a FREE give-away item, 3rd base, or anchor for a very small boat.
Weakness:
I''m afraid to plug it in, let alone connect it to my other componets. Sorry, It''s going in the trash. Hope they accept. Mine came in factory box inside earthlink carton. It included two "Earthlink return /exchange request" tags with names and addresses (etc.) of others who had returned the darned thing. It never worked. But that didn''t stop them from rewarding their subscribers with this supposed $129.00 value. Similar Products Used: Apex AS-660. But it actually powers on if you |

The price that it could be purchased at the time it was availible, MP3/VCD capable, and coax digital out (though it seems some models vary).
Weakness:
Many, poor build, poor interface, picture quality (grainy, worse than a VCR), composite video out only (at least the one my former friend bought), poor analog audio performance (shouldn''t be used with DPL AVR audio solution, should only use the digital out since these DACs really sucks),and locks up (the only solution I saw that worked was to repeatedly plug/unplug this thing). www.dvdsettlement.com is a class action settlement involving Panasonic and JVC, so if any of you are wondering about if a company making such a pos can get sued now there may be a standard to base this on. This player really does suck as not only have I seen this player in the home setting (compared to the Toshiba 3109, we had to hook up the composite cable since the Oritron didn''t have a better quality connection availible!) but have seen 3 other players brand new fail at a pawnshop (was wanting to buy a Technics DD/DTS decoder but couldn''t demo it as all three dvd players kept locking up!). A former friend of mine bought this for his niece (Christmas present) and we decided to open it up and give it a try to make certain it wasn''t defective (locked up twice while checking it out, not very good first impression). My advice for first time budget buyers, buy a DVD-rom instead and go to a computer parts recycler to find an old PCI video card with TV out (assuming your current card lacks TV out), and a SB 5.1 live card as well. Similar Products Used: Can''t really say, all the other DVD players I''ve used actually work but can say the video was worse than a friend of mine''s Toshiba 6 head hifi VCR. |

Pshaw.
Weakness:
Um, let me see... EVERYTHING. Um yea... Like everyone else reviewing this stupid piece of carp... I am quite disappointed. The only reason I am posting this review is because I just got done TRYING to watch one of my DVDs and the thing is being blatantly idiotic, and I needed to vent my frustration. You shall die, little Oritron. Your little ''binary lady'' at the load screen shall suffer most of all. Similar Products Used: Creative DVD 6x (DVD-ROM) |
