Pure JUNK !!!

This is an update of a previous review. So you think this is a bad product. You are correct The only thing worse is the service you get from KOSS the parent company of crapatron. I had to ship this to their service center at my cost. About 2-3 weeks later I received a new "refurb" unit. To my complete amazement this didnt work either. This didnt work right out of the box also. I anxiously put in The Cell. This one at least started to play, however as I started watching it I noticed the picture go from clear to a grainy dark red tint. This went on and on and on. You would think these idiots would at least send you a new unit or make some compensation. They dont fix these things they recycle it to the next poor schmuck. THIS IS A SCAM and someone should be filing a law suit against this company. DO______NOT______BUY ______THIS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If there was a negative star rating this product would get it !!!!!

Strength:

It worked OK for 8 months

Weakness:

locks up if disk left in unit, audio track glitches,no s-video
or componant out

I got this player free when I bought a projection TV at Best
Buy.For free I guess I shouldnt complain. If you watch a movie or listen to a music CD and leave the disk in for any length of time, you have to unplug the unit 2-3 times to eject the disk.Certain movies (the Matrix got to be unwatchable)would have audio "glitches",dead audio blips
constantly through high action scenes.Even ejecting the disk right after watching a movie, the unit might lock-up.
The unit finally died when I put a homeburned audio CD in.
It played O.K,but when I tried to eject it,no luck.Powering down could only be done by unplugging the unit.Even this
would not let me eject the disk.I had to open the unit, and remove the cover from the dvd reader itself to get the disk out.The unit never worked again.I'm going with an Aiwa xddv730.

It has a life ex

I have always been one to know that you get what you pay for and when it comes to electronics, buy from name brands. But there I am trying to save a buck and getting less. This thing is a pile of crap. Like others I had to un frequently unplug the unit to get the dvd out of the tray. If it would eject on its own, it took around 4 to 5 mins for it to finaly eject. The functions never operated like they should. I could never browse through the menues, only start the dvd. Finaly after viewing about 10 to 20 dvd's, the unit decided to not eject the dvd and stoped working completely. Circuit City would not take it back and would not give me store credit on another purchase. I don't shop there anymore.

Strength:

It seemed adequate enough for the price.

Weakness:

Refusal to play some Disney DVDs

Unit worked OK at first. Had some trouble with Disk #3 from the Toy Story box set. After exchanging the DVD 3 times (not suspecting the player) I got one that would play. Later I bought Disney's Dinosaur. Dinosaur won't play at all and I have to unplug the unit, plug it back in, and hit eject before it starts reading the disk to get the disk back out. I tried 2 Dinosaurs. THEY DON'T WORK. Then I bought 102 Dalmations, doesn't work either.

Ironically, I bought the play with the sole intent of collecting Disney DVDs. Boy did I pick the wrong player. Sadly, I can't seem to find the receipt to return it for a better one.

I have 22 disks, all but one are Disney, Dinosaur and 102 Dalmations are the ones that do not work (Toy Story cause problems but will now work). So I guess that most of them will play, if that is any consolation.

Weakness:

Everything is weak about this sytem. I would stay away, far away from this system as possible. The price is alluring I know, but believe me, it isn't worth half the sale price offered. This was a gift and I am still unhappy with it.

I first plugged this in, and with my entertainment system, it wasn't as easy task. I was pushing buttons, and they kept getting stuck. I thought it was broken, but the cheap buttons was hung up. It does that often. I opened and then shut the door, and it again got stuck, but now the door was halfway opened. I couldn't get it to do anything, and checked all the buttons to make sure they weren't hung up again, I finally unplugged it and plugged it back in. It worked! For a while. I watched a full movie. The second time I tried to use it. I couldn't believe it. The darn thing is messed up again. The text displayed say's "bad disk" I read the trouble shooting on this and all it say's make sure it is a good disk, disk is right side up, and that's abotu it. I haven't got myself to go behind the entertainment center and try unplugging it again. It is too much trouble, and besides, why do I have to keep re-setting it like that? I didn't do anything to the player that would cause it to go out. I just played one disk and it messed up twice. I really believe it is out for good this time. I tried all my disks and it says the same thing for all of them. My advise to all who think of buying one of these DVD players. Save your money and don't buy it and spend a little more and get a better one.

I haven't owned any other DVD player. I figured this would be a good starter one for me. I bought a lot of DVD's to use on it, but never got the chance to play them.

Strength:

Got anything that needs to be held down?? If so...this is the Player for you!!

Weakness:

Crappy sound, worked when it felt like it, WATCH OUT!! The motor that spins the disk burns out!!

Where to begin: i know how about this?

***WARNING: THIS PLAYER IS JUNK!!***

This player was given to me as a Xmas present. When i first hooked it up, it blew my mind: Great picture, good sound, and i loved the way i could just jump to a certain scene if i so desired!
THEN......IT HAPPENED!!
One month later, the sound started getting lesser, problems reading DVDs (Audio CDs worked fine), and it got to the point where i had to unplug the darn thing to eject the DVD!

After about a week, I rented Disneys' "Dinosaur", and that was the end. I let the unit read the disk for about an HOUR before giving up on it, and it wouldn't let me eject it NO MATTER WHAT I DID! I had to take the cover off to get the Disk out.

Needless to say, I took the $140 paperweight back to Walmart, and spent $10 more to get a GE DVD player that has worked E-X-C-E-L-L-E-N-T since i got it.

Just a little sidenote, If you did get this player, and want the Firmware upgrade from the Oritron Website, don't bother, their site has been taken down (coincidence? I think NOT)

All in all....if you see one of these for sale at Wally world, or anywhere else, check to see how much dust is on it, there's a reason for that, cheif!!

Everything

Just thought I add my 2 cents (which this dvd player is not worth it!) It worked ok for awhile when I got it. Then I notice some sound glitches. Then the cpu kept locking up when I turned it on. Then I had to unplug and plug it to reset the darn thing to read the DVD. Well now it is dead and will not go into the opening screen. So I had to open it up with a screw driver and remove my DVD by hand. What a piece of junk. Hope no one else buy another Oritron. If anyone has any tricks to get it to work please email me. Thanks and beware!

Pretty much everything else

I bought this piece of junk at Best Buy in March 2001 and when I got it home and plugged it in it was just as dead as if it were unplugged. Took it back to Best Buy and amazingly it powered on when it was plugged in there. Well, got it home the second time and it finally did power on...no idea why it didn't work right the first time. Since then no more of that behavior but I have noticed in the last month or so it's taking longer to read the DVDs when inserted. Also, since I got the unit I notice the picture goes brighter, then darker, then brighter, and the picture sometimes "rolls"--both at seemingly random times. Have not bothered to try to contact KOSS and from the sound of some of the other reviews here it would do me no good to try. Lesson learned. At least the unit is still working halfway okay but I would never buy another one of these. When this one gives it up I will buy a brand name player. And I don't shop at Best Buy anymore.

Strength:

Cost, size, picture quality.

Weakness:

No s-video output, no display, tiny remote

I bought this player last night and hooked it up. I played the new Phantom Menace dvd. It worked fine, and navigated all of the menus just fine.
I've watched a few dvds and everything seems fine so far. The player has very good anamorphic downconversion. No jagged lines, or other artifacts.
This player is very small and fragile looking. I've read the reviews here, and many of the problems seem to revolve around the player becoming "confused" and not responding to commands. Previously, I've had a lot of experience with laserdisc players. I've come across delays in tray openings when the player tries to process too many commands at once.
I have a theory if you let this player take its time processing commands, then it might not get overloaded. After watching a movie, I pressed stop, and waited for the stop display to disappear from the screen before I pressed open.
I'm hoping if the player is treated gently, and given plenty of time to switch functions, that it might be glitch-free for awhile. The player is very low cost and is as bare-bones as possible. For someone who has a basic tv set and just wants to watch movies and doesn't care about navigating through all of the dvd extras, then this may very well be an ideal dvd player. The picture is comparable to my Sony dvd player, and I was quite pleased with it. I'll post another review if the player starts to develop problems. Walmart claims that they warranty the player for one full year!
