Strength:

Useful as a source of spare parts.

Weakness:

Not actually a functional DVD player.

It'd be great if I could write something here about picture or audio quality, but so far all I've been able to see is the opening graphic built into the player. A few seconds after plugging the player in it becomes unresponsive.

This player was given to us by some friends who had owned it for less than a year. We watched a movie on it at their house, it seemed to play ok except for the appearance of some green lines on the screen. That was the last time we saw it working.

Our friends gave me the player after having to open it up with a screwdriver to retrieve one of their discs. I've only gotten it to work for a few seconds. Everything's pretty well labelled inside (really well labelled, like they thought a lot of them would be coming back for repair), so I checked the power supply output voltages and sure enough, one of them is dead or shorted. This player looks like it was designed by someone copying from the sample circuit diagrams from the DVD chipset manufacturer's datasheets.

Some people take this approach to starting a manufacturing business nowadays:
1. Design a product that is cheap to make and can be sold in high volumes at an attractive price, even if quality gets sacrificeda little.
2. Sell a bunch of them because of the low price.
3. Take that money and sink it into designing & building decent products in the future to people who didn't get ripped off the first (or 2nd, or 3rd) time around. Or just change your name and rip the same people off again. I'm not saying that's what the manufacturer did in this case, but let's face it, a lot of people are posting negative reviews of this product, and they all have a common thread.

The bottom line... If you don't remember the brand being around five years ago, and the price seems really low compared to other products then keep saving up your money for a while longer until you can afford something from an established company that supports its products and knows that its name is riding on their quality. We have had no problems with our Toshiba and Panasonic players. Not one problem at all, no glitches, no incompatabilities, nothing. In this case, you get what you pay for. When I see something low priced from a company I've never heard of, I think "Can I afford to throw this much money away?" Can you?

Strength:

Weakness:

Does not play DVD's.

My only question for you is if you know of a way I can contact someone who can help me. If nothing else I would like to get my DVD out before I throw it away.

I hope that the people who do the purchasing for Best Buy check that the company is able to support what they make. Other wise I might as well be going to a discount place in the city where I don't expect anything after the purchase.

Any help would be appreciated.

I knew I was buying a low-end player so I was limited on features but I expected it to work. It was quirky from the beginning but now (8 months) none of the buttons work on the machine and I can't even get my DVD out of player. When I referred to their manual for "problems" it says that if the buttons don't work you should - are ready for this - push the power button. I tried unplugging and replugging everything but nothing helped.
So my next step should be to contact ORITRON however their manual does not include a phone number, address or web site to contact. In short - no service. This player and company do not deserve any stars.

Strength:

It worked once or twice

Weakness:

It ruined a brand new television/vcr combo. Must be opened with a screwdriver. If I can remember the name of the salesperson who sold me this piece of crap, I hope he sleeps with his eyes open. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!

It makes a great doorstop. Never could turn it off. Had to open it with a screwdriver.

Weakness:

Quality

I was given one as a gift and it suffered a total system failure before it had finished playing the second movie. The manual suggested that I unplug from the wall to reset. When powered back up, the unit locked up with an 'EPROM Erased' message. Now that's re-assuring! It would not even eject my disk, and required a screwdriver to get my DVD back out.

Spend a few bucks and buy a product from a manufacturer that understands the definition of quality.

Everything

Not much more I can say that has not been said by many more people in the review of this piece of junk. I had problem also as soon as the warranty expired - low volume, not working all the time and the latest it won't do anything whether I use the console or remote buttons. I guess it time to throw this peice of junk into the trash after a whole 1.5 years of hardly using it. Even though there may be a few good units, from this review list, it looks like a very few, do not waste your money on this piece of junk. Buy a name brand DVD and search the web for reviews prior to purchasing.

Strength:

After 14 Months of use, none that I can think of.

Weakness:

Can't add anything new here.

Although mine lasted a bit more than 1 year, I began experiencing lock-ups and low volume just after the warranty ran out. Then one day I tried to use it after sitting idle for several weeks and nothing. Tried cycling power, but to no avail. I don't believe I've ever played more than 30 or 40 DVDs in this P.O.C. At the time, I figured for $100, all I was giving up was some fancy features. Little did I know DVD players are not at all like CD players (where reliability is less of an issue). Sure wish I had checked out this model before throwing away my money. Don't waste yours. Like others, I wish I could give this a 0. The rating it has makes it seem better than it is.

Strength:

none that I can think of...

Weakness:

It never worked very well, now it won't read most disks.

It never worked very well, now it won't read most disks. It would lock up on some disks, and the sound and picture would go out of sequence while watching disks. I would have to shut it off to get the sound and pic back in sequence.

I contacted the USA Oritron service center, they told me there was a software upgrade that may help. I received the upgrade 5 days ago (1/5/02) and my Oritron DVD100 won't read the upgrade disk. Oritron offered to replace the unit for $65 (plus shipping). I don't want to put another $65 into this unit. I think Oritron knew that these players were defective, thats why they offered to send an upgrade disk for free.

NO STRENGTHS

I have read most of the comments and I was not surprised to see so many consumers having the same problems as our
family. The DVD player lasted six months, then it just
stop working all-together. Very lite use.

If anyone can tell me if ORITION is doing anything about this poor excuse for electronic equipment.

All of my friends and family has heard my story, And I am still telling anyone who will listen.

NONE, UNLESS WE CAN SUE THEM FOR LOTS OF MONEY

Weakness:

THE ENTIRE PLAYER

This player is horrible, i got it about a year ago and have had problems since then, but about a month ago it started scratching my discs, then it wouldn't eject, now the red light goes on, but thats it, it sucks, it won't work. All I can say is that someone needs to file a law suit.
WE need a class action suit
so we can get the money back for the $100.00 paper weight we all bought.
We'll sue them for the pain of all the headaches we've had trying to reset it just for it to break again, until one day it decides to stop working at all.
