Strength:

2 audio outs, audio and picture quality

Weakness:

None so far.

This is my first DVD player and I have been extremely happy with this unit. I bought this player at Best Buy about 6 months ago and have not any problems with this unit unlike the previous review. If fact, it has played every DVD title I have thrown at it - must have played over 60 movies, everything from brand new to greasy fingered rentals, and it has never missed a beat. The picture quality is excellent and the remote easy to use. The unit also replaced my 7 year old CD player and let me tell you that the increased sound quality is impressive. I highly recommend this player.

DO NOT BUY THE PANASONIC A-120U!!!!!!!

I bought this about a year ago from Best Buy because of the good reviews I read around the net. After about 2 weeks of use I was watching "A Bug's Life" and it started dropping frames. It locked up and I had too unplug it. The disc played fine in my housemate's sony 550 and 500. I then noticed a few other discs "Big Lebowski" and "Friday" among others had the same problem about 1/2 way through and with some discs the player said "no disc."

I returned it and they gave me a new one, but wouldn't let me get a different model. They did give me the 4-year extended warrenty for free though.

About 6 months later the new unit started doing the same thing. I returned it, Best Buy sent it out for repair, and 4 weeks later I got it back. It still doesn't work right, so I'm going to back to Best Buy to try to get a different model. My friend's Sony players have not given him any trouble at all and we have played ~300 discs on them.

DO NOT BUY THE A-120U!!!!!!!

Strength:

component video, 2 sets of audio/video outputs.

Weakness:

Doesn't play CDRs, the buttons are too small.

Well I've had this player for about 2 years and I've never had a problem with it. My previous player made a horrible noise when I put a cd or dvd in it plus it didn't have component video so with would be useless to buy a tv with component video inputs. I changed the player for the A120 and the noise problem was over. The A120 plays with virtually no noise plus the display dimmer makes it almost invisible in a room with the lights turned off(specially during the night or when using a projection tv). Plus the component video output is great. The sound is AMAZING and the picture quality is great too. The only problem is having to read the manual which is kind of confusing at first but when you get used to it is like reading a children's book with lots of pictures. Another problem is that the buttons are too small, sometimes I push one button for another. What would really be great about the remote is if the buttons would be luminated but that's just a luxury not a neccesity. Besides this very little problems this dvd player is GREAT! Plus it has a lot of features like VSS (virtual surround sound which is really great if you only have a stereo receiver or shelf system, dialogue enhacer for Dolby Digital movies, plus it plays music cds with great clarity) I got it for $249 at Best Buy which was the same price of the previous model I had. I would really recommend this model to anybody that wants a not so expensive dvd player with excellent sound and picture quality.

Strength:

Great performance, and durabilty thus far. Operates quietly, quickly. Very good price....check on line for some really good deals...

Weakness:

None so far....Other consumers may want more features...but I honestly don't think you would use any of the other features not included...like zoom...you may try it out, but you won't use it much.

Excellent picture, sound, value. I haven't had one glitch with this machine, and everybody that has seen the picture and sound quality have been impressed. I use the machine with a Yamaha 5150 receiver, and JBL center, main and rear speakers...99 model year.

In addition to the positives everyone else is saying, this DVD plays rented - read sometimes scratched - DVDs far better than my friends more costly units.

Strength:

None. A total piece of junk.

Weakness:

There are so many. Where do I start?

I bought the player because I wanted one that would
allow me to watch DTS disks. When I received the player
it began to glitch so badly that it was impossible to
watch. It would get so bad that the sound would drop
out also. Crutchfield shipped me a new unit and guess
what. About 3 months later it did the same thing. This
problem usually happens about halfway through a dvd.
It happens on all disks not just dual sided disks. I
will never ever buy anything with the Panasonic name on
it again. Do not be fooled by the good reviews that
some gave this player. You will find out it is a piece
of crap if you purchase it. I only wish I could give
this player a 0 instead of 1 star. Maybe it will at
least be good target practice for my Smith&Wesson.

Strength:

Very Quick loading! Much faster than other DVD players. Digital outputs, easy design.

Weakness:

Does not play CDR's. Remote may annoy some people.

This panasonic DVD player is solid. I bought almost a year ago for $299 at 800.com and recieved $50 in dvd's plus 5 more free dvd's. For 8 dvd's and a player, that was a good investment. I have not had a problem yet with the player. It has not skipped or froze yet. The remote is responsive but the buttons are hard to read. It does not have a jog dial which would be cool, but then again I usually don't sit next to the thing. Another problem is that it does not play cdr's.
Overall, it is a solid unit and has served me well. DVD's sound great on my Sony reciever in DTS and DD 5.1 .
Recommended.

Strength:

Plays everything that I feed it quite well. Has black level expansion control.

Weakness:

No zoom

I already have a great player, the Toshiba 2109 for my main system.

The open-box special price and my extra 10% discount and reviews I read in Home Theater made this 120U a real steal!
HT rated this player and the Toshiba in the high 90's in performance.

It plays every DVD I rent or own with no gliches. It plays DTS CDs perfectly. Matrix, T2...just fine! Has all the inputs and outputs I need to attach it to my Sony 27"er and Yamaha 5150.

I've had this player for almost a year and have had no problems with it at all.

Sorry to hear about a few lemons out there.

This deck is cheap enough to replace it in a few years with a better similiarly priced player!

I give it only 4 stars in the overall rating because the new players out there have got to be better!

Strength:

Quick loading of DVDs. Optical and Coax audio outputs. Component video + S video + Composite video outputs. Crisp, clear picture. Decent CD player.

Weakness:

Remote is a little difficult to use but not a huge deal. And I suppose it can't play read/write CDs (havent tried one yet)

I have had this for close to a year and have had absolutely no problems with it at all! I browsed thru the review comments on this site before making my decision and haven't regretted it once! Thank you folks!

I have played many "tough" movies on this like Matrix etc and it has performed flawlessly. Sometimes I have found glitches but nothing that cleaning the DVDs didn't take care of.

I have it connected to an HT system comprising of a Denon 2800 recevier + Paradigms all-around and the sound is terrific!

Bottom line - you can't go wrong with this DVD player. Of course, it doesn't have all the bells and whistles like zoom + DD/DTC decoding or multiple disc capabilities but most people don't need those features anyways....
