I bought this product at $200 and has found nothing wrong with it. I have no idea the difference between the A120 and A120U. So far, there is nothing wrong with the pixelization and it sounds and looks great. So for the price, i have to give it 5 stars.

Strength:

"WHEN IT WORKS" i love this machine, DTS output, nice controller,

Weakness:

Piece of sh^t: won't play cd-r/cd-rw. Will play all of my old DVDs without a hitch but put in anything new and it takes literally 50 to 100 tries to recognize the disk (but it will eventually recognize the disk, AN HOUR LATER!!!!!)

DONT BUY PANASONIC PRODUCTS. "Chris" over at panasonic "customer support" was rude and very unhelpful, He said that he had to buy a new player, (i wonder which brand he switched to?). I have a panasonice tv, vcr, dvd and microwave (doesn't work now 1.5 years). I will never buy a panasonic or subsidiary product again if panasonic doesn't make any restitution for this sub par product. I read that there was/is a legal battle over this. Doesn't suprise me. Screw this piece of junk.

I bought this unit (A120U) two days ago $299.00 at BJ whose sale store. I can not complaint too much. It's a great DVD unit, sound, video... I'll give it a five start.

I've had the A120 about two months and so far it's worked well. I'm using the optical digital output. The manual recommends connecting the S-Video out directly to the TV. The A/V receiver suggests connecting to the receiver then out to the TV. I've tried both ways and see no difference. Picture is good both ways. I've been using this unit to also play DTS audio discs which sound great. I inavertantly bought some widescreen version DVD movies and I don't know if it's even possible but it would be a nice feature if the player had the capability to output these in 4:3 format. Other than that, It's a good unit for the money.

I am very pleased with this unit and rate it 5 stars! I had no trouble reading several disk formats with this unit and found the virtual surround sound feature quite an enhancement over the plain-jane TV stereo sound. Not bad for the price!

Good Player, good video quality. I liked several features of my Sony better, but I do admit the picture is better on this Panasonic. With all the Necessary features and a price of $299, I think it's a great deal. I would love to give it a 5 but it lacks a few things I took for granit on my Sony like auto-AC3 track detection. It has only audio dropped on 1 disc out of the 80 or so I've tried. I'd give it a 4.5, but since this forum doesn't have half points, I give it a 4.

What can I say that others haven't already? Great picture, and a price that should make it affordable to everyone, even skinflint college students. Has enough features for the price range, no complaints about the picture distortion (must have addressed it, seeing as I received the "U" edition of this model). Sound is very good even without AC-3, the VSS is surprisingly well implemented. If you have a HT system all set up with AC-3, then drop this into the mix and enjoy. 5 stars for great value. But absolutely make sure that you get a unit with a newer build date, or you'll be playing video Russian Roulette.

Well, I had the 120u for about 30 days. Construction was kinda cheap, the remote was just average. I popped in the first movie Desperado. Man was it nice. The sound quality was great, and the picture was even better. I tried several other movies within the 30 days and the only problem that I ran into was that it would freeze frame on certain movies, not all. So I decided to try the sony 530 since I'm a big sony fan. I got home and the player looked better than the pana and the remote was a little better. But thats not was I was looking for. Anyway, I popped in a movie, the Assignment and what a surprise. The sould was fine but the picture was not as defined as the pana. I then tried a second movie, Desperado to get another comparison and the picture was also dead. Then I tried Unforgive and I noticed a lip-sync problem. I could not believe that the sound and lips did not match. This onw is going back tomorrow. I'm not sure if I'm going to get the pana again, Its a great unit, other that the freeze frame that I got on only two movies out of ten the sould was great and so was the picture. I might try a pioneer and then post again. I'll give this unit a 4, only b/c of the freeze-frame. Who knows, It could have been that unit, who knows, the next one could get a 5

I just bought the A120U after considering the Toshiba 2109. I went with the Panasonic for a few reasons, and thus far, I have no reason to be disappointed. First of all, I paid $248 at supremevideo.com. THat's the lowest price I could find on the web. ANyway, I chose the Pansonic because unlike the 2109, it has optical and coaxial digital out. So what if coaxial is supposed to be better, I want the option of listening and choosing which connection I want. The unit plays great. No video or audio problems. One neat feature it has which I'm not sure the competition does, is that if you stop play, or shut the unit off, it will remember the spot where you were, provided you don't take the disc out, so you can pick up where you left off. THis is great, because often, you will not want to watch a movie in one sitting, or you'll have to take a snack break, whatever. My laserdisc player has this feature, and I'm happy to see it here.
I also went with the Panasonic because I heard the Toshiba had downconversion problems. No such problems on the Panasonic. I've played anamorphic and widescreen discs, and all look great (Contact, Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Rock, TOtal Recall, Armageddon, deserve special mention). THe unit is light, but seems well built. I mean, at least the case is metal, not plastic. The buttons on the remote have to pressed somewhat hard to register the command, but that's a minor complaint. The onscreen menus are well designed- change subtitles or audio in a second.

All in all, I love it. Good performance, good value.

Setup:
A120U
Samsung txf2889 (s-video connection)
4Q SatelliteS & subwoofer
