Strength:

Play on any disc, low-priced, very quick loading time and very user friendly.

Weakness:

Light weight

My 535 is an Asian version called 535K. The difference is that it can handle karaoke with mic input. In Hong Kong, you can have P.R.C. made DVDs at a much cheaper price. However, in terms of quality, I think this Pioneer is way way much better than those although it is a bit more expensive.
I learnt from you guys that there is a noise problem of the disc tray. Fortunately, my 535K does not! It works really well for more than a month with great picture and sound! Also, I don't find the remote control has any problem. I think its just find.
Finally, as to the only weakness of light weight, the solution is to place a heavy book(e.g. a dictionary) on top of the machine. It helps.

Strength:

Loading speed, ease of use, picture quality, sound quality

Weakness:

noisy disk tray

Very nice player indeed.

I first had the Samsung DVD-611, but my Alien DVD disk resulted in 'cannot read disk' errors on the first day. That combined with the reviews of that machine on this site made me go back an exchange it for a Pioneer DV-530 (same as DV-535 but in silver iso black).

So far it has worked perfectly, very nice picture quality, good sound quality, easy to use, responsive remote, ...

Just one complaint: the disk tray is a bit noisy and I can hear it during quiet parts of a movie.

Strength:

Fantastic picture and sound, multizone out of box, nice remote, fair to good audio CD playback, stylish design.

Weakness:

(Minor only) Slight pause at layer change, visual ff/rew is not smooth. For some, no zoom or mp3.

I bought this for the very reasonable price of AU$599. The player has better picture and sound than my old PC-based player, which nonetheless served me well.

It misses out on some of the gimmicks you can get, like mp3 playback and the ability to zoom. These are the last things I wanted, but you may be different, so I thought I'd mention them. If you want to be able to destroy the picture by zooming it or listen to the inferior audio of mp3, this player is not for you. The jerky ff/rew is something that annoys me slightly. It cannot be hard to make the DVD reader capable of handling more than 1x playback smoothly, but, if that is the biggest complaint I ever have.....

I now have a collection pushing 60 discs and all so far work perfectly on this player, including the notorious R1 Matrix and R4 Toy Story Toy Box bonus disc, which has apparently caused many problems.

Oh, another bonus for some out there, although I don't use it myself, is that this player has the best NTSC to PAL conversion I have ever seen. So, if you live in Europe, Australia or elsewhere with PAL, do not have a multisystem TV and want to watch Region 1 discs, this will probably be the player for you. Some of the cheap Chinese players over here in Oz will drive you to distraction with their conversion. Chances are you won't notice the difference with the 535. If you live in the US, disregard this entire paragraph. :-)

Although I'm going to give this player five stars overall, because of the minor discrepancies I mentioned and for the fact that it cannot do progressive scan DVD playback, it doesn't deserve it. I want to give it five value stars and 4.6 or 4.7 overall stars, but since this site doesn't allow for 4.5 stars, I'll have to round up to 5. It doesn't deserve to be rounded down to 4. :-)

Strength:

great picture quality, excellent sound, looks semi classy, great OSD.

Weakness:

remote isn't that intuitively layed out, feels light, sounds thin on cd playback.

a real gem on pioneer's part, with a very competitive price on what is essentially a well made 3rd generation player. i bought this while on holiday, and scored a very competitive price - AUD$529. pic is great, sound is great, and when coupled to the matching VSX-D509 amp, it is great. the remote can take a little getting used to, and the fact this unit weighs only 2.4kg can be a shock at first. apart from that, great one pioneer!!!

Strength:

Great picture and sound. Easy to use.

Weakness:

Has a plastic feeling. Boring remote, doesn't have the right feeling.

My first DVD-player and what an enjoyable experience. Crisp, clear picture. The sound is goos too (through my Yamaha RX-V496 receiver). Will sound even better when I change my speakers (currently I use a couple of Canton Fonum 400 and they sound a bit too sharp). Plays music better than my 10 years old Sony CD-player, but I guess that was expected. Not much to criticise: Perhaps the build quality isn´t top notch. But I'm sure I'll enjoy this player for a long time.

Weakness:

backlit remote could be even better

This goes well with my yamaha 496 receiver. For USD 240/- this is a great buy. Plays even CD-R format.

Great for a home theater enthusiast.

Strength:

Audio/picture quality, Optical out, Nice OSD menus, Plays CD-RW.

Weakness:

Tray noise when displaying DVD menus. Occasionally skips when changing layer. Plastic and light weight. Can not play mp3-CDR's.

My first impression when I took this player out of the box was how light weight and plastic it was. I guess I am used to metal casing. I also noticed it is not as wide as the rest of my equipment. Only 420 mm to normal 435 mm. The remote does the job but is nothing to write home about. The price is low so what do you expect...
I have it hooked up with my Sony STR-DB940 using an optical cable and then a scart directy to my 10 year old 4:3 TV using the S-VHS setting.
The sound and picture quality is .
I have only played about 5 DVD's on it so far. All of them played just fine. When I played the Gladiator (2 disk version) I noticed that the player skipped for 1 second when it changed layer. The Matrix played without any problems.

When playing movies I can not hear any tray noise at all but when going to the menus on the DVD's there comes a spinning sound from the player. It is not loud but noticeable.

When playing CD's, the sound sure beat my 12 year old Denon CD player :)

Paid price is without tax btw, since the tax in Sweden is 25% atm. My player is region free modified.

Overall I am pretty happy with this player I would recommend it to anyone that want a cheap player that plays most every DVD without problems.

Strength:

this little baby plays anything and looks great to boot!!!

Weakness:

very light but this could be a good thing

Well for a start the girth, height and weight are superb. This baby fits into any hole and keep's going all night long! It has no sync problems, superb picture clarity and tends to put the more expensive European models to shame. Who needs a Harmon Kardon DVD 1 when you can have a Pioneer DVD 535 for half the price? AND STILL PLAY CD-R!!!

Strength:

Excellent DVD player for the money. Plays CDs very well (for a DVD player). Nice multi-region capabilities.

Weakness:

FF/Rew Scan is not terribly smooth.

Yes, as one of the reviews belows says, the FF/Rew scan is not terribly smooth. But that is my only real complaint. All in all, I think this is a very good value DVD player. I bought mine in the UK, so it is a Region 2 machine, but I have the multi-region version. So far, I haven't had any problems playing Region 1 disks.

One very minor complaint - some of the factory settings are a bit strange. Shipped from the factory, my DVD 535 was set to output Dolby Digital signals but not DTS signals. When I put a DTS disk in I got no sound and wondered why. Then I realized that you have to go to the set-up menu and configure the machine to output both DD and DTS signals. If this is available as a menu option, shouldn't it be the default (factory) setting? At least the On Screen Display is very nice and easy to navigate through.

I think the CD output from this machine is not bad for a DVD player. Even a cheapish CD player will play CDs better than a good, mid-price DVD player, however, so one should always bear this in mind.
