Strength:

It turns on. Good picture when working* (see below). clean looking unit.
Sound is good

Weakness:

Does not play a single DVD without skipping the picture, and also is on a continuous contrast adjust: bright picture, dark picture, bright picture...

You definately get what you pay for with this model. it does not support many disc types, has trouble playing the types it does support.
This model gets a 2 for value because it is a cheap model, but even for its price, it should at least work properly.

1 overall because I cannot even watch the menu screen, let alone a movie without the unit having a hernia about displaying the image onto my tv.

Strength:

good pic and sound

Weakness:

sensitive to scratches and dirt so clean DVD first

This is a good quality player. I bought it before I saw all of the bad reveiws here. Plays MP3 well, VCD and all DVD's I have tried. Only problem is it is sensitive to scratches and shit that you get from shithole rentals.

Strength:

Great picture..sound...options for the price

Weakness:

skips..small remote..skips..skips..skips...did I mention it skips

I purchased the samsung dvd-711 first and it did nothing but skip. It skipped on all dvds whether they were new or rented, so I returned it to the store. Now being stupid I assumed that there was just a problem with that dvd player and looked at the samsung dvd-611, great price great options. But it's true what they say, "you get what you pay for." This samsung model was just the same as the last. Non stop skipping that seemed to get worse farther into the movies. It seems that samsung tries to lure the non-informed buyer by offering great options at a price well under the competitors prices. I returned the 611 and purchased a Toshiba SD-1600. I paid $30 more for a much better product that I have had no problems with and no complaints. Toshiba offered a great warranty at a price that is more affordable than I thought and an overall better product. Save yourself the headache of returning and repurchasing a better model, and stay away from the Samsung models.

Strength:

Good sound, good picture, looks nice, nice price

Weakness:

sk ips, and then sk ips some more.

This player is a piece 'o junk. I was reading the reviews here about the 611 (wish I read them before I bought it), and some people said that their Samsung hesitated (skips) once or twice per movie, and I'm thinking "Man, they got a good unit!" My player skips---no kidding---like once every 15 seconds. It was giving me a seizure last night! I couldn't even watch the movie. I was on the edge of my sofa just waiting for the next skip. Bug's Life wouldn't even load until 10 or so tries. It kept saying "Not a DVD-readable disk." Oh yeah? My iMac DVD player recognizes it just fine, thank you. It wasn't even the cheapest DVD we saw at the store---lots cost considerably less, like all the APEX models. We bought this player because Consumer Reports rated it highly and a "Best Buy." I don't see how, unless Consumer Reports somehow got a hold of 1) the only Samsung 611 that really works, or 2) Samsung replaced the inner mechanics with a Toshiba or a Sony, but left the Samsung case. My husband is packing up the 611 right now and we're going to Best Buy today to buy something else. St ay a wa y fr o m this d vd pl ay er!

Strength:

It was black and looked impressive. Matched the rest of my components.

Weakness:

It's a POS. Has picture lockups at least twice during every movie. Sound played fine though. Good for a blind person.

I went into Best Buy to buy a cheap DVD played that could provide DTS support to my receiver. I had a Toshiba SD3108 which had problems playing certain PC-Friendly DVD's. I was going to buy the RCA 2125, but the sales person told me to go with the the Samsung and save $30. I already had a Samsung 709 and it was not a bad unit, so I decided to go with the Samsung... or should I say Samsuck. I tried to work with Samsung to get it fixed and they wouldn't even admit there was a problem. I ended up begging Best Buy to take it back 6 months after I bought it and got the Toshiba 1600. No comparison and it costed me $20 more. Stay away from Samsung DVD players!!!!! Buyer Beware!

Everything about it

The worst dvd player I have come across.
discs pixellize,skips,jumps and sometimes plain
refuses to play.
Everytime I go to the library I wonder if the dvd I borrow
is going to play.
Getting rid of this piece of junk as soon as I can.
And to anyone who's planning to buy it.
PLEASE DONT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Strength:

Cheap. Lots of different outputs.

Weakness:

You guessed it ... skips.

I bought this player because of the combination of lots of outputs (so I wouldn't have as many worries about being able to hook it up to my system when I upgrade it) and the fact that it was cheap. I played two "virgin" DVD's (The Wall and Titan A.E.) and both skipped several times. It's just for a fraction of a second, but it's enough to distract me from enjoying the movie. After searching on the web and finding LOTS of reviews that say how badly this thing skips, I decided to take it back to BestBuy. I traded it in for a Toshiba SD-1600 ($40 more), which was a painless experience (BestBuy rocks). I'll post a review of that one after I've used it for a few days.

Strength:

Inexpensive

Weakness:

Poor picture quality and skipping

I just returned the unit, which skipped twice in a movie. I wish that I did some research on this site before I bought it. I wanted to buy an inexpensive DVD player and thought that brands should not matter much. But I was wrong. You do need to buy a reputable brand. Samsung is no match to Panasonic and Toshiba. After I returned the Samsung unit, I tried Panasonic RV30 and Toshiba SD2200. Both are much better than Samsung 611, but I like Toshiba SD2200 better. Toshiba has very good picture and sound quality, and its picture looks brighter on my TV. Panasonic's picture is not as sharp, bright and clear as Toshiba's.

Strength:

Price, style, plays MP3s

Weakness:

SKIPS like a wild monkey on gin n' juice. Only allows 8.3 file format for MP3s.

I had bought it over the 'net and thought I'd read some reviews while it was being shipped. Everybody said "good price...plays MP3s, but look out cause it skips." I was pretty worried...unpacked it, plugged it in, put in some of my own DVDs - no prob. Played some MP3 CD-Rs no prob (a little hard to navigate when "BEASTI*9" shows up (8.3 format)). So, headed to Blockbuster, rented some films, starting watching American Pie got to chapter 11 and just started skipping and actually stopped...couldn't even skip to later chapters...couldn't finish the movie! Mind you, the CD was scratched like a wild monkey. However, it played fine on my PC-DVD. I am returning this player on Monday!
