Strength:

Cheap, it but might turn into a waste

Weakness:

Nothing has not been said before. Sound, Skipping, Freezing

Total dissapointment, since the beginning skipping has been the isssue, then freezes. Sound is not that clear, too much bass.

Why Samsung does not recall this product?

Strength:

Looks nice, variety of outputs, plays DVD, Video Cd and Audio CD

Weakness:

Will not play some newer DVD's

I purchased about 15 new DVD's with my player. The Patriot, the newest of the bunch, would not play. Gave me a "NO DISC" error. I returned the Patriot and the same thing happened with the second copy. I called Samsung who told me that due to a change in the way some DVDs are now recorded, I will get that error. Since my unit is still under warranty, I need to take it to a "Factory Authorized Service Center" for the "chip upgrade" to alleviate the problem since it wasn't available when the DVD-611 was initially sold. I wrote Samsung and complained. We shall see what comes of it.....

Strength:

Good clean sound and a sharp picture

Weakness:

player is defective and must be fixed. It is a defective product that must be fixed!

First of all there were many times I wanted to smash this machine to bits. When I first bought this player there were certain disks it just had a bad time plying i.e. Gladiatior, Titan A.E., and the anime film Ninja Scroll. Samsung Knows it's products are defective and thats why it has a one year parts and labor warranty. Now, I have experienced skips, no disc, and the dreaded five minute skip ahead that is really annoying. Needless to say after I took it to a second service center they replaced the laser pickup assembly and now all is fine and instead of loading Gladiator 20 times to get it to play it is now down to 2. Although I think it is the disk because I get a no disc on my sister's Play Station 2. Also, I would like to report that I have not experienced any more skipping, minimum no disks, and no skip aheads.

P.S. I took it to 2 service centers and the total cost to Samsung was $250. You get what you give.

Weakness:

None found yet(keeping in mind the price)

Ive bought this player without knowing the massive bad reviews on this site, but i havent found any flaws with mine yet. I have no skips and freezes and it got decent sound qualities, it plays mp3 without a hickup, so im quite happy with it.
I will try to put an XO Clock in it and some new OPAMPS this should hive better sound and picture, i will return and comment the outcome.
So to summarize it, im quite happy with it. :)

Strength:

No skipping any more !
Cheap, good picture and sound for the bucks !

Weakness:

Skipping problems SOLVED !!!

SInce I read that there are a lot of unsatisfied customers out there (I was one too), I just wanted to tell you that I got my DVD fixed last week.
Samsung changed both the firmware, laser and the MPEG-card due to the difficulty to read newer DVD:s.(skipping problem)
This was done by warranty without cost for me.
I think the technique in DVD:s has been moving forward and that's why the "old" components didn't quite fit the job.
Samsung has realized this and are taking their responibility
against us customers.
My advice is to check in to the dealer where you bought the DVD or to nearest service-center, to get your's fixed too.

Happy viewing !

Strength:

One of the cheapest dvd players with component video, excellent picture.

Weakness:

Yes mine skips too, but not too bad.
Home theater receiver does not detect digital input from player. disc tray opens and closes with a single touch of button

Overall this is not a bad dvd player, for what I paid.
Picture is great.
But My Technics DX930 (home theater receiver), cannot detect a digital signal from the dvd player. I have tried both optical and coaxial cables. It detects the signal from other dvd players and dss receivers but not from the Samsung 611. Also when I go to load a disc and press the open tray button, it opens and closes in one motion. Usually I have to press it like 10 times before it will stay open so I can put a disc in the tray. As for the skipping, it isnt so bad. It happens on occasion. The buttons on the player and remote are lazy. Cdr's, sometimes they play sometimes they don't. All in all, it will serve its purpose until I replace it this spring.

Strength:

Cheap

Weakness:

Skips

My wife bought me the unit for my birthday (which was about 2 weeks after we got married), and that is the only reason why I haven't taken it back. It plays most movies without too much skipping. I have had it skip really bad where the movie was unwatchable only a few times. I would not recommend buying this DVD player. There are cheaper DVD players out there if price is all that matters. If you are looking for a good player, skip Samsumg.

Strength:

Easy to use, nice remote

Weakness:

Skips like a speed freak spinning plates on poles.

For six months, this unit performed beautifully!
Then, the occasional skip. It was newer discs, so I didn't think too much about it. But now there's a definite line between low-feature discs and loaded ones. Every time mine refuses to load a disc, I have three little rituals I perform to make it go.
1) Turn off player. Turn it on again. THis sometimes does it.
2) Put in my supercheap Plan 9 From Outer Space DVD. It loads, then remove and try newer disc.
3) Open and close tray, then press the PLAY button on the actual unit.
THREE KINGS absolutely will not play no way no how not ever, straight from the box, even though it works in other players.
I called SAMSUNG, they said call an official fixer in my area. Since it was 6 months before it became a problem, I was out of luck. The official fixer said it would cost me more than I paid for the player to fix it and that I should buy another. The warranty said one year, but they weren't willing to honor it. I notified SAMSUNG and am still waiting for a response to this.
SAMSUNG will have to start selling the CHERRY 2000 replicants before I give them another dime.
