Weakness:

A little expensive. Fairly big and heavy.

This is an excellent DVD/CD player / changer. Awesome build quality, picture quality, sound, features. No trouble whatsoever, I have used regularly for 2 years. I use this w/ a high-end Sony DD receiver and NHT speakers. I am very satisfied w/ sound quality, both on DVDs and CDs.

I bought this DVD player new from Best Buy last summer, and it worked fine for a month. Now, every time I watch a DVD, there are lines that move vertically across the screen. I am using a Harmon Kardon AVR35 receiver, which was purchased around the same time as the DVD player. When I pause a movie, the lines disappear. Also, when I change the volume, the lines disappear. I'm still trying to determine if it's the DVD player or the receiver. If you can help, please email me.

Strength:

Loaded with features, fast access to tracks/chapters, 5.1 channel output, easy to install, many set up options, intuitive menus, good looking

Weakness:

Will not play CD-Rs/CD-RWs/MP3s, joystick on remote and the remote itself is shoddy, DVD/CD wells not deep enough to hold disks, occasional power cut-off when first switched on, sometime will not shut off if disks are not loaded into the tray, no zoom feature

This is my first DVD player. It's nice for what it offers especially since I got it on sale. The menus and picture and sound options are well done but there are some surprising quality flaws considering it's a Sony. For instance, when I first fire it up, it sometimes switches off arbitrarily. Also, if I switch out a disk and leave disks on the other four trays and try to switch it off, it won't turn off because it is still trying to read the empty fifth tray (this is my second one; the first one that I had exchanged had the same problems, albeit not as frequent). The remote gives the impression that it was either cheaply made or hurried. Definitely worth $350, not close to being worth $599. Overall, I'd equate it to going out with a beautiful woman only to find out she doesn't have the personality to match the looks.

P.S.: If any of you out there have had the same power problems that I've had , please e-mail me. I tried talking to Sony about it but it was past the 90-day warranty period.

Strength:

Versatile, great CD player.

Weakness:

So-so DVD player. Lip-sync issues.

It works okay. Music sounds great with the player, and it is 5-disc. But....

1) It does not play CD-RW (at least most brands of them. It says right in the manual that it doesn't, but it doesn't make the absence of this feature any less of a drawback.

2) I have had minor lip-sync issues. Probably 1 out of 5 movies watched. Ranges from a few seconds to the whole movie. It also can be juuuuuust off, or a good bit off.

3) Pricey.

4) Not in love with the remote, particularly when trying to select options in DVDs. Very easy to select the wrong thing.

For anyone considering a Sony DVD 5-disc player, I suggest highly getting the Pioneer DV-C503. I bought the Pioneer after the Sony for my downstairs and regret not having bought it originally. Better DVD player, not quite as good for CD sound, but it does play CD-RWs. No lip sync issues. Much better price.

Strength:

Good Quality DVD player

Weakness:

does not recognize CD-R or CD-RW

Let me first say that I am reviewing the DVP-C653D, which is the international model of this unit, with switchable power-supply, other than that it is identical. It functions extremely well as a DVD player--and I have never had a problem with video or audio from this unit from DVDs. It is one of the last Sony-Japan units made, and the quality is evident. It is also one of the changers, if not the last changer, with two separate lasers, one for CDs and one for DVDs. This, theoretically, should make for improved reading of CDs, but as I said, it doesn't read CD-Rs or CD-RWs. Too bad. The CD sound, if output through the digital output, is really VERY bass-heavy, but this could be my receiver (see my review of the Sony STR-DA50ES). this is not true of DVD performance, or, as far as I can tell, the analogue output. I like the remote, and find it easy to use, and well designed. That's just MHO. If I could somehow get better CD performance out of this machine, I would be very very happy with it. AS it is, I am satisfied with it, but will give it 4 stars, for build quality, and DVD performance, but 3 stars for CD performance.

Strength:

Good DVD picture; lots of features (other than the lack of ability to play CD-Rs).

Weakness:

Poor CD sound quality through analog outputs; cannot play CD-Rs; a little noisy spinning certain DVDs.

This is, as far as I can tell, a very good video player. The buid is typical Sony, which means nice "high-tech" look and good assembly with sort of plasticky feel and parts. I don't have any of the vocal "synch" problems or any other glitches that some others mention. At first I though that it was too bad that it doesn't play CD-Rs, but the CD sound quality through the analog outs was so poor, it really doesn't matter. So I'll keep my dedicated CD player for now. But I didn't buy it to play CDs, so four stars to the Sony.

Strength:

Plays all discs (only one has ever skipped). Pretty lights. Exchange... best of all. Instant Replay (backs up 10 seconds instantly).

Weakness:

Those damn 6 cables for SACD output.

The thing someone mentioned about jamming, then switching to another scene... well, it did it once (and has never jammed or skipped on any other disc). It did it on a filthy rental movie (no, not XXX, just full of scratches and fingerprints). I assumed it was the disc, not the player. I have bought many Sony players because the stabilizer method they use works. Other players have skipped and jammed far worse.

Mine was not made in Japan; it was made in Malaysia.

The SACD (one free with the unit) through 6 ANALOG PORTS!!! Please... could they not send the decoded signal through the coax port? I will not route 6 RCAs (very pricey in high quality) to get a sound that is very much like a regular CD with Pro Logic II (and SACD disks cost more). I am very happy with DVD audio discs (not DVD-A, just DVD stuff like Hell Freezes Over), digitally recorded and DTS (I'm a DTS junkie; DTS rain is WET).

I will definitely return it, either for the Sony 600, which I like very much, or the Harman-Kardon D 50 (despite all the mixed reviews; if it acts up, it'll go back in the 30-day return period. Period.

Value becuase I got a $160. CAD discount. Otherwise, too expensive for analog SACD output. Sony needs to rethink this idea!

Very good product rating because it is a good product. It's just not the right one for me.

Strength:

Very good DVD picture and sound, features.

Weakness:

Cannot play CD-R, a bit pricey.

I've just not had the problems that have been mentioned here
at this site. I feel this is a very good DVD/CD player/changer. The CD quality cannot compare to a stand-alone CD player, but it plays well enough with my Marantz SR8000 receiver. In addition, the DTS sound on this Sony is exceptional I have found. The unit does tend to heat up somewhat, but it has rarely skipped and never had a lip-sync issue (knock on wood!!!). I've had this Sony DVD changer for about two years now and never had a problem and feel its overall a very good model.

Strength:

Its a Sony Product, whic is a powerful marketing tool.

Weakness:

Poor construction, inferior materials. Feels cheap but looks good.

I am very disappointed with sony for tagging their name to this product. I gave up my single disk sony to upgrade to this product and was very disappointed with the performance. It does not play CD's very well, and it constantly skips tracks on my DVD's.

I love Sony products but this one probably spoiled it for everyone.

Strength:

Excellent image and sound quality, and building quality

Weakness:

CD quality weak a little bit when compare with hi-end dedicated CD players

To my knowledge, this is the last multi-tray DVD player made in Japan by Sony. It's quite expensive when we compare today's DVD players market value. However it's worthwhile to spend the extra money for the quality. The later Sony DVD models are built elsewhere in Asia for cheap labor cost. Needless to say, the building quality is not the same.

The C-650D is massive both in weight and in volume when compared with the latest models. However, the image and sound quality are impeccable. On my 36" Sony Tube TV (BTW, I don't like big projection TV), the still and slow playing images are crispy clear. The C-650D can also display bit transfer rate on the screen.

For more than one year and a half, I've played DVD, Video-CD and CD in a mixed way. Everything is to the top performance that was claimed by the salesman.

Of course, the CD quality can not be matched with high-end CD players, because the C-650D is using the same laser to pick-up DVD and CD signal. I believe it is optimised for DVD not for CD (wavelength is different). Therefore, CD quality is comprised a little bit. In the recent Sony DVD models, the CD quality is even poorer (due to low-cost laser chip).

Overall, this is one of the best multi-tray DVD player even in today's standard. Sony should make it compatible with CD-R.
