UPDATE!!! It's been over a year, and I have had no problems what so ever. I must have got a freak system....but I am very happy with it. |

Strength:
Built in decoder. Smooth scans.
Weakness:
Ability to play cdr and cdrw media. I don't know what people do to their players but I had not had a lick of problems with this machine except fot the occasional skips on rental dvd's where people have abused the media. A swipe with a tissue fixes those problems. Similar Products Used: Philips. |

Like sooooo many others, I, too, have nothing good to say about the Sony DVP-S560D on account of its well documented NO DISC and C 13:00 (dirty disc) problems. I’ve also read a lot of posts (here and elsewhere) concerning the S560D’s problems and fixes that lead me to offer the following observations, for what they’re worth: NO DISC Errors Chances are, if every time you load a disc your S560D always displays a NO DISC error and you never see C 13:00 errors, then fuse F402 on the (early model) MB-86 board has very likely blown and the Ben Morris fix (http://www.ben-morris.net/dvd/) might resurrect your player. If, however, your S560D is still displaying C 13:00 errors intermingled with NO DISC errors, then fuse F402 has probably not yet blown and replacing it may have no beneficial effect on your player’s problems. Such was the case with my S560D. C 13:00 Errors Perhaps the R416 and R418 resistor replacements (from 150K Ohm to 82K Ohm) specified in Sony Service Bulletins (mentioned here in SoCalGreg’s 3/10/02 review and also as a Newsgroup mention on the Ben Morris site) would lessen or eliminate the incidence of C 13:00 errors when such errors are intermingled with NO DISC errors. But, as a practical matter, I would not even dream of attempting to replace R416 and R418 with manual soldering techniques – the components are too tiny (less than 1/64th of an inch at their metal clad ends) and heat damage to existing or replacement components much too likely were one to attempt manual soldering. I’ve also tried to cure C 13:00 errors (numerous times) using the auto-calibration procedure outlined on this site by SonyHacker’s 1/4/02 review – also without lasting results. I’ve not yet tried the fix recently recommended in an 8/29/02 review by ssorrenti relating to heat build up. I’m afraid the S560D and its brethren (DVP-S330, S360, S530D, S550D, S570D, etc) suffer from fatally flawed engineering design and component part suppliers – inadvertent flaws, let’s hope, and not deliberate. This is not what we’d expect from Sony. But it’s what we all got. |

Just dropped dead one day Hi I'm actually looking for some advice, my DVP-S560D just up and died one day. I searched around for a fix and came across some other postings about the fuse fix. I would attempt that except my player isn't even powering up like the rest of the units you listed here. I thought I had a good unit until mine died, but I thought I was alone until i found this website and the nurmous other people who have problems with this unit. Sony should give us all our money back for buying into the sony brand name. A product shouldn't just up and die after a year or two. I'm going to switch to another brand name of DVD player. I'm just disgusted with this unit and the amount of money they want to repair a problem that shouldn't happen to so many people. When a unit dies for one or two people thats a fluke, but this is design flaw. Anyways, if anyone has any advice on how to get my unit to power on I'm open to suggestions. I have the same problem as everyone described below that the unit has No disk error, but I never have C13 error. After doing the fix as described on F402 fused. The problem now has became intermittent. What I mean is that with some disc it will play with no problem, while at other it will display C13 error (new eror code to me). So I have to open and closed the tray couple time to make the player retry read the DVD. Sometime it takes more than twice to do this before the player can read the dvd. anyone has any suggestion on this? |

Works great after vent modification. I found a FIX that has been working for 4 months now!! I like the most of you have exprienced the problems that have been posted here 100x. I am sure most of you have noticed how hot this unit gets after watching a movie. Once my unit started acting up i thought to myself maybe this problem is caused by all the heat thats trapped inside the unit (there are zero vents for cooling). So to test out my theroy i removed the cover off the unit and watched the same movie i did the night before when it acted up. WELL TO MY SUPRISE the unit worked flawlessly! I got thru the movie and 2 others (in the same night) and NO PROBLEMS!! Then to verify i put the cover back on and watched a movie and as before my test it frozze an hour into the movie!! So i figure thats the problem to much heat build up! So i drilled some holes in the top for ventelation and i havent had the problem since. My brother also has the same unit and he hasent had a problem either. |

It worked better than the $99 GE DVD player that my parents have...at least for a little while.
Weakness:
Can't make it all the way through a movie I have experienced similar problems to all of the hundreds listed below. Fortunately (I guess) my DVD player hasn't shut down completely with the infamous 'No Disk' error. Instead, I can never make it all the way through a movie without the player freezing and either skipping ahead several chapters or shutting down completely. This always happens a little after the one hour mark of watching a movie. Needless to say, this thing is a piece of junk. My question is, what DVD player are y'all buying to replace this model? I'm now in the market for a new one, but I don't want to get stuck with another piece of disposable electronics. I'd love to hear about what y'all think of different models/brands that you've switched to. I realize that I can read reviews of other brands on audioreview.com, but I'm just interested in what people who have had the same problems I've had think of other players. |

Excellent video downconversion for 4:3 monitors. Good universal remote. Flawless bass management.
Weakness:
Noisy drive. Somewhat harsh sounding CD playback. Can't play CD-Rs. Only lasted 2 years. My luck isn't usually this bad, but I have now gone through 2 DVD players in 4 years (over $1,000). My first was the notorious Panasonic DVD A-310U then I moved on to this Sony with high hopes. This player is now giving the "NO DISC" error after 2 years of weekend use. I have read about the fuse repair and considered trying it, but I know that if there is a class action lawsuit or recall, a free repair or replacement will not be offered if the DVD player has been altered/modified. This is something I learned (the hard way) after being part of the class action lawsuit against Panasonic and JVC. I boxed my dead Sony player up to await a recall or settlement. This gave me a good excuse to buy a new progressive scan DVD player. Hopefully the new one will last more than 2 years. Similar Products Used: Panasonic DVD A-310U Denon DVD-1600 |

Worked fine at first.
Weakness:
Doesn't work. After about 9 months I started having problems with some DVDs freezing up. Then after 1 yr. I had the "No Disk" error on certain discs. Then I got the "No Disk" error on all disks. I fixed it by jumping the F402 fuse. This was the first and only time I will purchase a Sony product. I bought an inexpensive APEX DVD player for my daughters bedroom and I have had no problem at all. I can't believe Sony will not admit there is a problem with their product. post-warranty issues After viewing the previous reviews regarding this DVD player, I seem to be the only one with a different problem; the player will no longer power out of standby. I couldn't even keep it on long enough to get my disc out! After 18 months, I also recieved a C13 message, but I then got an error of somesort and that was the end. I did not try Mr. Morris' fuse fix, as there was no "402" on the board. I really don't know what's going on, but it is a real disappointment.
