Strength:

none zero zilch nada

Weakness:

that we as consumers are so jaded by the buying the Sony name {guess maybe this is payback for nagasaki}

Its Sony as a hole, I have a POS Trinitron that was junk after a year. now i make the same mistake buying a closeout STRDE-875 but the real kick in the teeth is Sony dropping the p?rice of the PS2 after i paid 3 Bens at Christmas guess what Sony? NEVER AGAIN YOU SUCK NO MORE TRASH FROM YOU

Strength:

Worked good for the first year

Weakness:

Too bulky for a paper weight Too light for an anchor

Don't get the C13 error yet, but definitely have freeze problems, even on brand new dvd's. Tried the F402 fix...no effect. I expect to spend tens of thousands of dollars on AV equip in the future....unless Sony acknowleges this defect and replaces my broken unit, they are never again going to see a single dollar from my wallet.

Well, I had the same problem as everyone else. And I went with the fuse fix. Now my player is up and running again. No thanks to Sony.

Strength:

Great player, excellent Dolby Decoder, great picture and options

Weakness:

None other that the C13 and "NO DISK", also the Sony Service charge SUCKS

I used this player with no problem for almost 13 months, just after the warranty period expired. Then this C13:00 error started with frequent skips and freeze and one fine day the Famous "NO DISC". Found this newsgroup, tried the Auto Calibration fix - didn't work, was frustrated and angry at SONY and their Service centre for the charges, otherwise I am a big Sony Fan. Finally I tried this Fuse 402 fix and guess what it works as before. Just be careful with the soldering, its hard for an unexperienced person to try this but I am lucky that it worked.

Strength:

Great when it worked.

Weakness:

Very bad history. That and Sony needs to learn how to treat their customers.

My roommate and I really wanted a DVD player, and we wanted a nice one. We looked at Zeniths and Philips, but really like all the features of the Sony, and, well....it's a Sony. We split the cost and we've been happy with it until recently. We were watching a movie and it froze and we turned it off and back on and it wouldn't read any disks - DVDs or CDs. Reading the reviews here (the other reason we liked it - it was reviewed well at the time) I'm thinking of trying the fuse fix.

Strength:

My first DVD player so I haven't anything to compare it to.

Weakness:

Fails shortly after purchase.

Hello. I got my 560 in December of 2000. Although I have owned it since then, I have only USED the player less than 10 times. The last 3 discs I've watched is when the screen freezes and chapter skips started. I decided to try "The Fix" posted here below. I opened my player as instructed and discovered I did not have the "F402" fuse at all! The "F401" fuse was present only. Perhaps I had an updated player? Anyway, since my player was on it's way out I decided to pull the "F401". Now when I insert a disc I get the infamous "NO DISC" error. Ha!

Strength:

You can take the thing apart to get to the blown fuse.

Weakness:

SONY product testing procedures and circuit component selection.

Hopefully all the folks who have posted their NO DISC problems over the last few months are still visiting this site. Ben Morris' fix WORKS, and while we all have a right to be ticked off at Sony for their design oversight and lack of accountability, if you can carefully use a soldering gun you can save yourself hours of aggravation and at least the $170 SONY service cost. I'm glad I didn't rush out and get a new player.

Strength:

NONE

Weakness:

After 1 year it is useless. Sony doesn't claim any responsibilty for a DEFECTIVE product. SHAME!!!!

Here is another one. Just after 16 months of use, in the middle of a movie the screen froze. The player was extremely hot. Now we get "No Disc". Called Sony today and they said they could fix it for $170.00. I told them for $170.00 I will go buy and new DVD player but not a Sony. Just for laughs I have a friend who has the same model and guess what happened. "NO DISC" Sony you have a defective product. I have many Sony products, but this is the last one I will ever buy. (since they will not admit they have a problem)

Strength:

Great when it was working. "No Disc"/"C13" problem was simple to fix.

Weakness:

Destroyed itself after warranty period. The fact that Sony refuses to admit that there is a problem, and therefore I refuse to buy another Sony product.

I had no problems with this DVD over the first year or so of ownership. It played everything I threw at it flawlessly, with great sound and video. The honeymoon was soon over, as I then began to experience random lock-ups and the infamous "C:13" error. Finally, about two weeks ago the player just up and died. It completely froze, reset itself, then refused to recognize any discs at all. I noticed that the player was extremely hot when I was checking it out. Go figure, this was during the big exorcism scene at the end of "The Exorcist". I wonder if that had anything to do with it, but I digress... ;) Anyway, looking for an answer on the Internet, I stumbled upon all of the reviews here, which didn't help the disappointment that I was experiencing with this player. I immediately began shopping for a new DVD player, somthing non-Sony (Pioneer DV-353 was my top choice), but decided that I would try to fix using the information contained within some of the reviews that had been posted. Hell, I had nothing to lose. I noticed the excellent post by Ben Morris below, with a link to his web site (http://www.ben-morris.net/dvd/) that contains instruction on what he did to fix the problem. I followed them, except I soldered some small wires in place of the fuses. Low-and-behold, the damned thing was working again! I ran it through the auto-calibration in the service menu, and was watching movies again. I highly recommend at least trying this procedure on your dead player, as it can't hurt, the damned thing is already broken. Total cost to do the repair was about $15, which was to obtain a soldering iron and solder, and about a half-hour of my time. To hell with Sony and their $175 repair charge!

Strength:

Good interface, easy to use. Built-in Dolby Decoder

Weakness:

Its a piece of trash. Spent $300 and now have nothing to show for it.

When we first got the DVP-560d, I thought it was the best of the best. It had the dolby decoder built it, and the GUI was easy to read and follow, it was simply awsome. About 6 months after we bought it, it started giving us those "NO DISC" errors, so we actually exchanged it for the same model. To our surprise, the same thing happened again. I called SONY and they were very very very unhelpful. I told them that this spcific model had a problem, and that a thousand people have posted this problem on the net, the guy i was talking to denied any knowledge. So now i am stuck, so i am goin to try the fix that was posted earlier, i hope it works, you all should try it.
