Strength:

None, you can find cheaper players that actually *play* dvds, and have MP3 and CD-R playback.

Weakness:

Designed to break after 1-2 years of use, cheap components, frequent errors, will not play discs.

This is a piece of crap. Somehow mine managed to last about 2-3 years before giving me the C:13:00 error. I think it only lasted that long because I wasn't using it that frequently. I've been using it almost daily for a few months and now it's really going downhill. First it would simply freeze in the middle of a movie for a few seconds, but lately it's been skipping around scenes, and momentarily scrambling the picture. I also have a few dvds that it will not play if the subtitles are on. Now it refuses to play about half of my dvds. If I keep ejecting and closing the cd bay and turning the power on and off I can sometimes get a dvd play, but other times this will not work. On top of that, it never supported MP3 or CD-R playback, which is just stupid. I always thought Sony was one of the premier brands when it came to electronics, but I'm so pissed that I'll never give them another dime. So many of their dvd players are plauged with problems and they have made no effort to improve or recall their defective players. I think it's outrageous that they've been getting away with this for so long. The units are designed with cheap and underrated components so that they will break down within a year or two so you are forced to spend more money.

Strength:

I holds 5 discs, and is compatible with our receiver.

Weakness:

It holds 5 discs, so you get 5 stuck at once. Open button has to be pressed repeatedly for the door to open. No error mesg listing in owner's manual.

My dvd player worked great for 2 yrs, then started giving me an error message e 27 and will not open. My discs are stuck inside. The error mesgs are not listed in the owner's manual, which is very inconvenient to say the least. I also had trouble previously with having to hit the open button several times before the stupid thing opened. Seems to be a common problem.

My daughter's Apex one disc dvd player works better and we bought it at walmart for $35. Unfortunately, it's not compatible with our receiver.

Strength:

All the bells and whistles

Weakness:

Skipping, stopping, restarting

Great till it started acting up after about 2 years of use. DVD's would freeze, skip, restart, etc, came online to find some answers. After reading a review that turning the display (dimmer) off helped, I decided to check it out. Turning off the display (dimmer) did nothing. However I messed with the setup and have found that the problem goes away with the right settings. With NO DVD in press the Display button: (you can do this from the remote or at the unit, but can not have a DVD in the tray) Set the Video EQ to Standard Digital Video Enhancer = Off Advance = Off Next option is the Setup: Auto Play = Off Dimmer = Bright Pause = Auto Playback Memory = Off Track Selector = Auto I think the main problem is the Video EQ and the Digital Video Enhancer, however I gave the rest of my settings to show how I have mine setup and working without problems.

I must be lucky then, because my unit has worked alright. No major problems other than when I power it up, it takes several presses of the button to get the dvd door to open. It seems to have basically no compatibility with DVD-R/+R media, as I have had zero luck getting non-retail DVD discs to play. I get the "no disc" error that so many seem to get. If it hadn't been a gift, I surely wouldn't have bought one, based upon the number of complaints about it.

Strength:

Works great, looks good and has all the stuff you need not too much more.

Weakness:

It is very weak in quality, and customer service has much to be desired. But they did at least meet me halfway on the remote.

I am just another of many people who have had a problem with this DVP S560D DVD/CD player. I bought it in a rack stereo package and as everyone else, very pleased with it. I am now figuring out that my local library does not lend out POS DVD's but in actuality the unit is a POS. Thank you for all the other reviews, to make me understand this! Anyway, just bought a CD-RW drive for my computer and burned a compilation CD for myself. I then tried to run it on this unit. It does not read it, "No Disc"... have YOU seen this before, I bet you have. Anyway, the ironic thing is I have had a 15 year old SONY Walkman CD player that I hooked up to the Receiver/Selector... and it works great, same computer written CD that didn't work on the two year old unit! It figures. I also had problem with the remote for this unit, the rack came with two remotes, and the one for the Receiver just went dead one day, but since I only used it for the volume, I just used the one that came with this DVD player. They wanted 42 Dollars delivered for it. AS FOR SONY, to make a long story short, I worked on them for, get this, 1 hour and two letters, and they finally gave me the remote for $20 after two years (one year guarentee) I convinced them that I wasn't lying, and I wasn't, that that POS died about one month after I got it. At least I swayed them into good business practices but I have to say I will think twice about my next purchase.

Strength:

Looks good and works well for about 16 months.

Weakness:

The discription of the unit as a "DVD Player" is a bit misleading. More of a DVD storage device. Won't read anything CD or DVD.

Let me throw my log on the fire that this unit is a peice of junk. The no disk message is a constant companion on the rainy midwest nights when I'd like to watch a movie. Sony's ostrich approach to this problem has made my decision to never buy another Sony product again very easy.

Strength:

Great audio and video output, works well with other components.

Weakness:

Difficult to repair and not a friendly service website at Sony.com.

S560D worked fine for about 3 years and then died. When it worked, it was flawless - the dolby digital, s-video etc. worked great with my other components - all non-SONY. Now, the problem I am having has never been reported by anyone else. I dont have the typical "NO DISC" or C13 00 error. It just doesnt power up. When I press the power switch, it blinks on for a few moments and then switches off. In the process, I see the STANDBY and SONY DVD on the display before it switches off and displays the red light on the power switch. Rather unique problem and goes to prove that there is more than one type of problem with these DVDs. In hindsight, the problem was present for a few months but I didnt realize it. I hit the power switch and then open/close immediately and found that it didnt - thought I pressed it twice. Instead, it was the sign of a "dying S560D".

Strength:

Everything! Built in Dolby Digital and DTS decoder, component, S video, and composite hookups, and coaxial and optical digital hookups! Also great for playing audio cds. Plus, its a freaking Sony!!!!

Weakness:

Came out a little too early to be able to play cdrs and cdrws.

I purchased this dvd player from a local pawn shop and looked up the specs online. After seeing what it cost new, I made the purchase and have had nothing but great service out of this dvd player. It remains my primary player for dvds and is now hooked up to my 51" sony widescreen using its component outputs. It has both optical and coaxial digital outputs as well as a 5.1 channel output. This unit also features great Virtual Enhanced Surround modes for those poor souls without a real home theater. Theres also great tv type options ranging from 4:3 letterbox to 16:9 widescreen. Judging from the other reviewers, I guess I got the only working DVP-S560D that Sony built! While I plan to upgrade to a dvd changer with progressive scan, I will continue to keep this player hard at work in another room in the house.

Strength:

Good at first sight. Though not a something I would call a strength after what I have went through with this thing.

Weakness:

Everything after.

Like many others- played great in the short time it lasted. Can get no real response from SONY except- Warranty still in effect? After that "short time"- "C13" and "No Disk" where the bane I (and my daughters)had to live with. Pathetic!!!!

Strength:

Looks nice. Nice features when it worked.

Weakness:

Reliability is awful! I have other Sony products that have worked flawlessly for 15 years. But after this POS and Sony's attitude, no more Sony for me!

Great product while it worked. But like just about everyone else, it quit after about 18 months. We blamed Blockbuster for bad DVDs until it wouldn't play brand new DVDs. Then we started researching and found out what a POS this thing really is. And Sony customer service is horrible! They tried to blame it on us for playing rented DVDs! We asked them if it was supposed to be a piece of art -- something to look at but never use. What a joke!
