Strength:
slim profile, when new it had excellent picture quality, great sound, everything you could want in a mid priced player. It will also make one fine looking bookend.
Weakness:
the lack of mp3 support, and lack of compatibility with other formats as well. And the big one, NOT RELIABLE. Everything was hunky-dory with this machine up until about 6 months ago. We started seeing the now infamous C13 error that everyone talks about. I of course assumed that this was the rental DVD's that were causing this problem. (scratches, dirt and the like). But after cleaning and checking disks relentlessly I now find that I've been wasting my time. It's now gotten to the point that it will happen 2 to 3 times through the course of every movie I put in there. And now I can see it will eventually die. All I can say is that Sony better do something about this, it isn't good for their reputation. I will be going to the top for this one. I think their are a lot of loyal Sony folks like myself that really need to be reassured that this company stands by it's products. And if they don't, well- I think it's time to move on... |

Strength:
good picture, ease of use, simple
Weakness:
skips / doesn't play some DVDs as though they were dirty/scratched Never really liked Sony consumer products over other brands, but I figured they were all the same once you got beyond the features and went with the one they had in stock. Picture is great, sound is probably great (but only now have I gotten the cash to buy a good receiver). I'd say in mid 2001 the player started having issues with American Beauty. We figured the DVD was scratched or dirty, never paid much attention. It happens alot on rentals too. I just happened to come across this site and now I'm aware that I'll have a nice doorstop in the months to come. On a related topic, I've also had TWO Sony cd players crap out upon first using them. I've also had Sony portable phones stop functioning after a year. I figure they practice planned obsolesence. Sony is not a brand I will be using in the future. None.
Weakness:
Doesn't work. Constant hanging, skipping, and the C:13:00 error. I was driving myself crazy cleaning DVD's and the player to try to eliminate the problem until I came here and found out the model is a lemon. Instructions for attpemting to fix the problem yourself can be found here: http://www.benmorris.net/dvd/ Worst $300 I've ever spent on electronics. |

Strength:
Headphone jack with volume control, two audio out connections, Two S-Video connections.
Weakness:
Length of time before failure Bought in November 2000, the unit has lots of features not found on most players on the shelves today. I used the unit infrequently, so I was disappointed when it failed December 2002. I sent the player for repair, and got an estimate of $370.00 plus labor to repair. Reading experiences from others on the internet, and mine, I would suggest selecting another model or brand. Similar Products Used: Panasonic |

Strength:
DVD-R playback
Weakness:
Breaks down and stops working. $130 to fix, but easier to just buy new one. I, Like everybody else have had problems with this DVD player. I kind of feel lucky to have had a functional one for about 2.5 years now. From what I have heard alot of people have gotten the infamous nodisc/C:13 error. I suggest to anyone who wants to keep a sony DVD player for more than 3 years to get an extended service plan. Similar Products Used: None. First DVD player. |

The Sony Name
Weakness:
Watching DVDs. When working the picture quality is great but I have had the same problems as everyone else, it rarely works well. For a long time I was foolish enough to think that what I was experiencing was as good as DVDs got. I too have been devoted to Sony Products and on balance I have been well served. This player however has really brought down my opinion of their practices. I can no longer trust the name. I am looking elsewhere for my new DVD! It hasn't killed anyone
Weakness:
big waste of $300.00 no value what so ever I have had this dvd player for a little over 1 year. I have yet to be able to watch a movie without some kind of problem. I have had the skipping, c13, no disc, frozen picture, and distortion. It is now no longer working. Sony will no longer get any of my money. They know this should be recalled but they don't care. I would suggest anyone thinking of buying Sony products, should think again. Similar Products Used: i have a number of Sony products but I will never buy Sony again. And I have convinced a number of people to do the same. |

Strength:
Great picture and sound when it works
Weakness:
Rarely functions appropriately now, after 18 months Same problem that a lot of others are experiencing. Doesn't recognize disks, ultra sensitive to smudges or scratches (i.e. won't function unless disk is pristine). Don't buy it. I can take a disk that doesn't function on this DVD player, walk down to my son's room, put it in his $80 player and it works perfectly well. |

Nice when it works.
Weakness:
Piece of crap. There should definitely be a recall on this machine by SONY. I lost a lot of faith in them after wasting some hard earned cash on this. This thing is a complete waste of money. Paid around $300 for a big ass decoration on my shelf. It worked well for a year or so and then I started to get the C13 error. Now it won't play disks at all. I'm about to tie it to my car and drive around the block a few times. |
