Strength:

Worked great while it lasted.

Weakness:

Lasted two years. Could be a business school case study for planned obsolescense and lack of customer support. Sony Home page told me $132 for a flat rate fix, or the cost of a new decent DVD player.

My S560D lasted 26 months!!! The adjustment program said I had a whopping 188 hours of use. Same problems as everyone else has stated, skipping, dragging in places, error code C13:00 and finally no disk. I thought I'd abused the machine until I discovered the dozens of other dissatisfied users on the net. I too bought the 32" wega, sony amp, and DVD player simultainiously for standardization. I very surprised the product is such a piece of dung, haivng owned Sony Trinitron TV's for over 20 years without problems. I drilled holes in the cover and base, tried the adjustment menu, and finally the F402 fuse bypass. A word of warning to those considering bypassing the fuse: I had access to a professional electrical shop and all the tools, 25X lighted magnifying glass, professional tweezers, flux, etc... I still had a heck of a time getting the wire soldered back on the board. It is only 1/3" in length, and soldering two joints is not for the faint hearted (or shakey). None of it worked until I did the adjusment menu after the F402 fix. I used the option 2 manual alignment adjustment and boom, it just started working. Another word of advice for those who attempt the 4 Jan 2002 "Sonyhacker" adjustment: Let the machine tell you which DVDs are single layered and which are double layered. There is a disc detection option. I could not find any markings on the DVDs telling me single or double layered. For those wondering, single layered discs can hold about four hours of data, double layered about eight. Don't be confused by double sided discs vs double layered. I had to look up the definitions on the net. BOTTOM LINE: My DVD player is funtional again, but wouldn't bet money on for how long and am already looking for a replacement. AVOID SONY DVD PLAYERS!!!

Strength:

Picture quality, Sound quality, remote features.

Weakness:

Manufacturing defect with Fuse overheating causing picture freeze and pixilation for many users after 1-1.5 years of use.

I have had picture freezes and pixilation with my Sony DVP-S560D only after it has been on for 2 hours or more. It is 2 years old & this has been getting worse the last 6 months. It will respond after a few seconds to the remote commands but freezes again in a minute or so. If I turn it off for ½ -1 hour it again plays normally. During these freezes there is NO error message displayed. Most users report the freezes WITH a C: 13:00 error code. After reading the other reviews and the repair web site: dvdfix@benmorris.net I decided to open it up & see if my 402 fuse was burned out. I saw that the green board was ½ hidden underneath the disc tray & mine has different markings than the picture on Ben's web site. Also, I have poor soldering skills. I was wondering if my player has NOT yet burned out that inadequate fuse but will soon. Maybe the fuse gets too hot after 2+ hours and “trips” causing this freeze problem? After cooling down (by powering the unit off 1 hour) it works properly again. So, I was reluctant to disassemble & rip off the 402 & try to solder. One person on this site had mentioned drilling ventilation holes. I did an experiment. I removed the cover & reconnected my player. I played movies for 19 consecutive hours! I actually watched the last few hours when it was plenty warm. No freezing at all. It worked perfectly. So I drilled 56 ventilation holes in 4 rows of 7 about an inch apart measuring so no holes were “wasted” on top of the disk mechanism. Plenty of holes around the green board. I also continued to place the unit on top of a Video tape so it is raised up 1” for air circulation underneath where I can feel it get warm (I had done the raising a few weeks earlier but it would still freeze after 2+ hours.) Result of ventilation holes – No freezing during 3 consecutive movies! So, it was on about 5 ½ hours straight with me watching & worked perfectly. I think the problem is solved. I had purchased a new DVD player (Toshiba SD-4800 $189 sale Best Buy) as a back up in case ventilation holes failed & my next step fuse bypass failed. I didn’t even open the new player & will return it. Drilling ventilation holes may help some without the more difficult & drastic action of fuse bypass. I won't buy Sony again due to poor customer service and ignoring issues that affect many users while denying they have ever heard of the problem. If you already have this DVD player and have had a few freezes -- raising it up and drilling some holes may allow you to avoid the problems so many have experienced.

EVERYTHING

I have been reading and reading about this F402 fuse fix and I can't get it. I have opened the damn thing up COMPLETELY and nothing says F402 on it. I owned this peice of crap for over 3 years and it spits the No Disk word at me like it's cussing me out. I'm thinking about going to the top of a sky scraper and droping it. Just in case anyone was wondering I replace the DVP-Sux560Dix with a Zenith DVB216 and I love it. Oh and by the way I will NEVER buy another SONY again!!!

Just a quick note for those of you that may have missed a very early post. I have all of the same issues as the rest here and have been preparing to try the fuse trick since my player gradually worked up to 100% error 0% working. I found a post dated January 4 2002 by sonyhacker with a diagnostics program on the player. Figured I would give it a try and GUESS WHAT!! Everything is working perfectly again. Have run several dvd's in a row just to let it play. All seem to be working fine with no problems. I am still going to drill vent holes in the cover, but think the fuse trick can wait. May work for you, may not, but is was very simple to do and it just might fix your problem. Good luck to you!

Luckey I was desperate enough to find this web site before I tossed it in the GARBAGEOOOOOOOO!!!:)

Well All I can say is that all the people who got the good ones; they were luckey. I think I got my remedy off this site. VENTILATION-VENTILATION-VENTILATION!!!!!. Sounds like an odd fix but, drill holes in the top of cover. Try this before the fuse blows. So far,So good.

Sony....makes decent equipment Good interlaced player Nice menu set up Easy navigation Works great with other Sony equipment

Weakness:

Sony....made decent equipment Two year life limit No ventalation Seems like it may have been thrown together with wrong or cheap parts.

When I first was looking into the DVD market 2 years ago.....I plunged in head first. I didn't even know a site like this exsisted. I went out and bought every component in the Sony brand. First off was the Wega Tv. Out of the box the TV was a mess. Had to recalibrate the whole beast. You would have thought this would have told me somthing. Then I got what I thought was the best interlaced player for the buck ....the 560. About six months into the purchase I found this site. Low and behold the 560 had terrible reviews. So for the last year in a half I just sat there and waited for this DVD player to crash. Then one week before it's two year anniversary, it crashed. It performed all the system errors as all of you guys have explained. I will admit this player was pretty nice until it crashed. I can complain my arse off, but it won't change anything. Sony will no longer be in my future upgrades. I can see Sony having a faulty product, but not standing by their name and fixing it. I won't even try to get there attention. The company already has my money. As for the DVD player, I took it to the local electronics shop and got it fixed.... (fuse). I will not plan on spending more than $50.00 dollars to fix it. I just can't see trashing a $300.00 unit. Another thing that really gets me is I bought my father the AV2100B remote two days before my player crashed....so again Sony has got my money. I'm glad there is a site like this....so when your ready to spend your hard earned money you know what your buying. Just remember guys and gals.... DO YOUR HOMEWORK!

Weakness:

Constant random skipping around DVD

Unit worked most of the time ok, but would like to skip to random parts of the DVD (just when the action started getting good). After almost 2 years of service the unit decided not to recognize any DVD's, but would always recognize a CD. Took unit back to store for service and the store stated that the logic board was bad. At least I purchased the 4 year extended warranty for $50. The store said they would give me back the purchase price towards a new DVD player. May not get another Sony.

Strength:

Great picture

Weakness:

Short span life

After 3 years of intensive use, my Sony finally died on me. I couldn't believe all the negative postings. It seems Sony should have stopped making this player after the first year. They had to have known about the problems, and yet they continued to manufacture the unit. This will be last time I purchase a Sony dvd player....
