Strength:

Great picture. Good remote

Bought this DVD player last December and it has worked flawlessly. I have not had any of the problems several people have written about. Great DVD player with a stunning picture.

My first DVD player, and of course right after I bought it the 2109 came out at a cheaper price. Overall I'm very pleased with it, the picture is great and the remote is very easy to use. Only complaint is that I wish the instruction manual would tell if it's okay to keep a disk in the player when you turn it off..what can happen? Because I am tired of opening and closing the machine everytime I take a break from watching.

I've owned the Toshiba 2108 since November and it's been a great performer in every way. Before that I had the model 2107 ,which I sold to a friend. It also was a fine unit. The video quality can be absolutely film like ( if your TV is properly set up, get a copy of "Video Essentials" on DVD ) and the sound , using the digital coax output, into an Acurus ACT-3 surround processor is wonderful.
I have not experienced any audio or video drop outs with either the 2108 or 2107 DVD players.
A great value.

Just got mine back for "refurbishment". No more audio dropouts! I bought a Pioneer DV414 during it's short stay at Toshiba. I would say that with the fix, this is a better overall DVD player than the Pioneer. The picture is sharper and the unit a bit more substantial. The Pioneer is sooo light. If you can find one w/o the audio dropouts it's a great player

I am having a problem in DTS (and only DTS). I hear a whurring sound (that alternates in and out about 5 times per second) through the speakers in DTS mode. My amp is a yamaha 2095 and I do not believe that the problem is the amp. I've tried different DTS DVDs and they all have the same problem. Also the problem disappears if I switch to another audio mode on the DVD. I use a toslink cable between the amp and DVD. I don't seem to have the audio dropout problem that a lot of people experience.

Has anyone had this problem or know what the culprit may be?

Strength:

Good overall entry level DVD player of it's time. Has played all discs, but not flawlessly. See Review Summary.

Weakness:

Slow chapter skip

This player has developed two problems, although it is difficult to tell if they were there all along.

1)Note DVD is mated to 4:3 HDTV-Ready with 16:9 compress capability.

On some movies the DVD player will cause the TV to switch back to 4:3 from 16:9 when watching anamorphic movies. The problem is repeatable. It happens on certain disc at certain scenes.

2) Memory function only works for CD's, not DVD's.

I recently tested a loaner-new-out-of-box SD 2200. It did not exhibit these problems. The menus were faster and the picture looked better (TV is ISF calibrated).

Strength:

Component/DD/DTS out. Full featured remote with (gasp) rewind and fast forward buttons mysteriously missing from the Toshiba 3109

Weakness:

Inept OSD design. Wouldn't load DVD's for a couple months until it was unplugged and plugged back in again.

I bought this player for my parents this last Christmas. For the features (Dolby Digital decoding, DTS out, Component video, decent brand name) and the ultra low price I got it for ($249), I figured that it would be a great player. After playing 4-5 DVD's on the machine, it stopped loading DVD's at all; it would say "L" then "Lo" and that's the closest it would come to "Loading." After spending a couple months trying to find the receipt, my parents just asked me to fix it. I unplugged it and for some reason decided to try plugging it in one more time just to make sure before I ripped it apart. Well...that worked.
I've managed to use the machine a couple of times since I 'fixed' it and I would have to say it's not a bad player. My problems with it, though, are that the subtitle and audio screens only stay up for seconds after you press the button, the remote is kind of cumbersome for day to day use, and it just doesn't seem to load DVD's that quickly.
For the price this is a very good entry level player, but anyone else will find the absent features and overall design of the units dvd playing disheartening.

Bought unit at Christmas based on glowing Home Theater Magazine review. Have enjoyed a sterling picture and sound through analog outs (currently not DD equipted, but will be shortly). Great sound on CD's and DVD's through Rotel pre/pro and amps and Monitor Audio 700 Gold speakers. Understand new model will be HDCD capable and will ship in February. I may take advantage of 90 day trade-in policy at local dealer (United Audio). Rating is based on my non-DD experience with unit.

I had been following the reviews posted here to check on the general consumer acceptance of this product. I finally took the plunge and bought one after a demo by the local dealer and I'm not disappointed one bit. I owned the 2100 before and this beats it hands down. The picture is stunning and the sound is fantastic! I bought the new Sony TA-E9000ESD processor and with the 2108 playing DTS Daylight, it was the first time I could say the experience was superior to the DTS equiped cinemas in town. Its feature packed and coupled with a giveaway price, this is THE budget DVD player on the market now.

I haven't experienced any of the dropout problems so many others seem to be having. I have my 2108 mated with the Denon AVR3200 receiver. Sound on movies is terrific and very good on music - - I have the Energy "Take Five" satellite/ES10 subwoofer combination. Yeah, I know it's still entry level, but the sound is really good for a home theater sound system that cost only $1800 (speakers, receiver, DVD player and Monster interconnects/speaker wire included).
Picture is exceptional. For the price ($325), I am very happy. For all of you having the difficulty with matching the 2108 with Sony receivers, I know the problem is Toshiba's, but maybe it's an omen that you should steer clear of what is not Sony's forte, receivers.
