Strength:

Zoom, picture quality, truckload of features for a great price, sound of movies and CD's.

Weakness:

It wasn't free . . . (Sorry, It's all I could complain about!)

This product is great. My friend got it and after hearing him rave about it, I had to get one. I'm glad I did. My wife and I played the VCR and DVD versions of "The Matrix" at the same time on our TV using the picture in picture to swap back and forth - what a difference! I was so impressed with both the picture clarity and sound definition. The remote isn't the greatest, but I'm getting used to it. As far as the tray seeming flimsy - I don't agree.

Overall, I am completely impressed with this item!

Strength:

Great picture & sound quality, navigational features, decoder, dual tray

Weakness:

Joystick navigator is annoying; DVDs sometimes take time to navigate; can't skip FBI and other intro messages

I have been looking at Toshiba, and this player in particular for some time, especially since I have had many people convey to me their positive experiences and recommendations. I saw this on eBay and bid for it, finally winning at US$180, plus US$16 s&h, for a grand total of US$196. The product was brand new and in the box. For me, this was a great deal, because the same model was being sold in Canada for CAN$100+ more. (This despite me not being able to take advantage of many deals that came with the DVD player, such as free NetFlix and Hollywood Video rentals, as well as other offers).

The dual tray feature is great, because I collect collector's editions of DVDs, and can watch the second disc after the first without much hassle. Also, I can leave in a CD and DVD, which is convenient when I have friends over - can listen to music during dinner, and then watch a DVD afterwards, with great ease.

While I am only starting to build my home theatre (this is the first of many new components to come), the sound seems great - though I have to turn up the volume on my TV higher than I would if I were watching a VHS video or just the TV (I have no idea why...). The picture quality, on my 27" TV via an S-VHS connection, is excellent - I can't complain.

Two big problems I have are the following: first, it doesn't seem able to play CDRs. I have only tried a few, but none seem to work. Even though there was never a claim made with regards to this feature, the fact that it can't is a major disappointment - attributable to only my lack of research. Second, the remote, while well laid out, has navigational joystick which irritates me. The joystick sometimes doesn't respond, and sometimes responds too much. Perhaps practice will help, but every time I use it I wish it were different.

One feature I like is that you don't have to turn on the player to perform any functions while at the unit. Thus, you can push one of the two eject buttons, and the unit will automatically turn on and eject whatever media is in the designated tray. Similarly, it will play when you push play even when the player is initially off. However, there is no eject button on the remote, which is sometimes annoying, because even though I go up to the machine to insert/remove discs, I often do it in the dark, so instead of using the remote I have to feel for the eject buttons. Also, even though there is a dimmer for the display, it does not dim the three lights that are always on: power (red), disc one (red if in use, green if not), and disc two (same colour scheme as disc one).

Overall, I am very pleased with this product, and have been using it almost daily. While there are a few personal issues I have with its 'ergonomic' design, the meat and potatoes stuff is all there, and fantastic. Given the price I paid, I think it would be illegal to complain!

Strength:

good quality, excellent sound, great picture

Weakness:

fast forward

I purchased the 2200 at www.consumer-direct.com for $259 (wanted the SD3109 but its not available anymore) Got the unit two days after the order was placed and it did not work. Every time I inserted a DVD the player would start to play then go right into pause. Called Joe at sonsumerdirect and had a replacement in 2 days also. 2nd unit worked great! Great sound using S-Video cable and fantastic sound using the Optical cable. Connected to a Denon AVR-1800 receiver and a 32" RCA TV.

Strength:

Picture, and Sound!!

Weakness:

None

Had 2 Sony's and they both worked great at first them they started acting up. I hooked the Toshiba up and I could not believe the difefrence in picture and sound quality. I was always told Toshiba makes great stuff but never tried one. I really like the twin tray system and the ZOOM feature. Toshiba is on it's 5 generation player already which makes them the leader in reliability. Sony is miles behind the competitors in quality and bugs. For someone that wants an excellent player with no troubles I highly recommend this player!!

Strength:

Tons of connection options for audio and video, lots of handy features, top shelf picture and audio quality.

Weakness:

Would have liked a few more options for configuring audio playback via built in DD decoder, joystick on remote sometimes didn't pick up movement

I needed a DVD player with a built-in Dolby Digital decoder for my DD "ready" reciever, and Toshiba had the most to offer. Working with a very tight budget, I was able to pick up the SD2200. Couldn't be happier. Dual tray is nice for double features (or leave in Toy Story 2 for the kids, and swap out disk one for the parents...). Remote is quite nice, but not perfect. Video playback is stellar, and the audio via built in DD decoder is quite nice. Very flexible design, with enough features to satisfy most needs. Highly recomended!

Strength:

Component output, S-video output, 2 disk tray, optical and coaxal output.

Weakness:

None. The remote complaint is unfounded.

This thing is great. Thank you to everybody who reviewed this player. I have absolutely no complaints about this DVD player. I paid $550.00 Canadian at Future Shop. I went back to get one for my dad though and I can't find it anywhere. Was it taken off the market or what? Although it's a little bit pricey on the Canadian side, this thing will play anything that you can throw at it flawlessly. I have played many, many movies on it without a hitch. Now and then there is a slight but negligable pause as it changes layers but it is definately nothing to complain about. The images are crisp and clear and the optical output is amazing for audio. Coupled with my HT, I enjoy watching movies at home more than the theater. When I tried out the THX intro I was blown away. This player is THE player to buy. I spent months looking at JVC's and Panasonics but in the end this was the smartest choice. It even has a DD decoder if you need that kind of thing. Some people seem to have a problem with the remote but I don't understand the complaints. It works great, it's ergonomic and the little joystick is really, really easy to use so don't even think about those comments when considering this player. I guess some people can never be completely happy because it works just fine. If you're looking to buy a great DVD player that you can truely rely on and enjoy buy this one and rest assured that you made a great choice. I would definately buy this player again if I had to. You'll love it.

Strength:

I think this dvd is awesome
I like the remote, it is very easy to use

Weakness:

None so far

I love using this dvd
But someone in my family hates the widescreen
Does anyone know how to set this to play in full screen?
I know this is probably not possible but I have to ask, since this has 5.1 output, can I plug speakers directly into the dvd player, or do I need a reciever?
I can't wait to get surrond sound!!

Weakness:

Remote Button Placement

For the System I have. The reciver is a Yamaha 795A and the speakers are All Clements 308di's for the fronts, Center is the 266c and the sourounds are the 2206bps bipolar
and do they ever rock. I have had this DVD player for 3 weeks and has yet to do me wrong. I was to get the SD-1200 but by the mistake of the shipper I got the SD-2200 for only 159.00 (Score) and boy am I glad they messed up on this one. :) Lets just say it's where the more people buy the cheeper it gets. Ok lets get on with it. This unit works without a flaw and the duel tray is just what I wanted, because my CD player really sucks. The Optical out is great and the remote would be better if the placement was laid out better. Example the play is on bottom to the right and the forword and rewind are on top to the left. Whats that all about. Thats all I have to say about that, other than that the SD-2200 is great I love it I love it. The picture is sharp and the sound is crisp. If you have to pay full price for this thing you wont be disapointed at all. This player may feel light and feel cheep, but it looks great. Who says it has to be heavy to be worth alot and be the best. (Cough Sony Cough)

Strength:

Great sound and picture quality; doesn't skip at all

Weakness:

None

This machine is probably the best value on the market. I can't stress enough how dependable this machine is. DVDs that skip on my other machine (Samsung 909) play with no problems. The two trays comes in handy, but is not absolutely necessary. The remote, albeit different, is actually pretty good, if not, completely adequate. All in all, this DVD player does what other players cannot do; play DVDs with consistency and quality, giving the owner a real sense of confidence in the machine, that nothing is going to go wrong. I have had much experience with DVDs that skip or can't be played without missing out on material. When you watch a movie, worrying about skips, etc. is the last thing you want to do. Put simply, this DVD player "kicks butt".
