Strength:

Dual tray, zoom feature, 540 lines horizontal resolution, HDCD

Weakness:

Doesn't play most CDR's, joystick on the remote

After my puchase of the Sony 53HS10 HDTV, I was in the market for a dvd player. I settled this unit mainly because of the postive reviews here and the dual tray feature.

The picture is so clear and crisp with playing DVD's. The The sound is also excellent with both DVD's and audio CD's. I have played over 20+ DVD's and 10+ VCD's without any problems.

Only gripe I have about the player is it doesn't play most CDR's. I tried it with different brands (Imation, Verbatim, HP, Gereric Compusa...)The only brand of CDR it will play is the generic compusa CDR's (go figure).

I had a friend that bought over his Toshiba SD6200 (Progressive Scan)and we couldn't really see any differences between the two players.

Overall, I would recommend this player. I would give 5 stars if it played most brand of cdr's.

Strength:

Dolby 5.1 built-in, 540 lines, various outputs

Weakness:

Can't play the Matrix disk at all, can't read badly scratched disks.

I got the unit at $260 from a local store and it can't play the Matrix movie at all. I was not convince so I brought the disk to the store and it did the same thing or even worst, skipped many chapters. The sales guy who recommended the unit to me was so embarrassed that he immediately asked me to return the unit and exchange for some other model and brand. I returned it but did not buy from him because he did not carry other brands and models I wanted, so I returned it. It is quite sad as I like the zoom feature and the remote is quite well laid out. Unfortunately, I don't recommended it because it can't play certain movies such as the Matrix which is a dual layered disk. This leads me to wonder what other disks it can't play.

Strength:

Well, the audio is AWESOME! It transfers through my Sony like a charm. The video is fantastic as well. It's true that it does restart the movie but then again, I've got the 30 seconds to kill. The video is superb and I've had NO problems as of yet. Actually, I have had an occassional hiccup when watching a rented BLOCKBUSTER DVD but have had no problems with my movies. This has been a GREAT player thus far.

Weakness:

Well, my little cover on the door popped off but I said screw it. It was the last one at Best Buy so I kept it. I've noticed no weaknesses thus far. I've really enjoyed this player. I had to watch American Beauty on VHS the other night...YUK!! But the movie was great!!

Overall, I would highly recommend this player. It's got all the great outputs in the back that are perfectly easy to hook up. The audio is just unreal.

The first movie I bought was...guess.....yep, The Matrix! It played the movie without as much as a hiccup. It was superb and the audio/ video was great. I've just really had a lot of fun watching movies with this DVD player.

I paid $290 out the door at Best Buy. I missed the $219 sale by a freaking day!! Oh well..it's great.

Strength:

Just about everything.

Weakness:

Slow-loading tray. Rather silly dual-disc design is helpful only to those too lazy to replace a single disc.

Having watched about 50 movies with the 2200 in three months, I can vouch for its reliability. I have had no trouble with any of the movies I've rented or owned, even those that were heavily scratched. The player makes the transition to the second layer on a DVD very quickly, and without complaint. Using the component video outputs and the coaxial audio output, I now find that watching movies at home is far more enjoyable than going to the theater.

About the only complaint I have with the unit is the rather silly dual-disc tray, which slows loading tremendously. Still a great deal, though.

Strength:

Solid audio and video performance; nice features at the price

Weakness:

Remote is good but could be better

The Toshiba 2200 delivers crisp video and leaves nothing to complain about. It has no trouble with DVDs that are in decent condition. It wouldn't play the first DVD I rented, but there was an obvious deformity on the disc that could not be cleaned off. The sound quality with video DVDs is very good and that is using Pro-Logic. I can't evaluate the built-in Dolby digital decoder as my receiver does not have a 5.1 input.

The audio performance is superb. Sound and Vision ran a comparison test last year in which the 2200 was included and its CD performance numbers rival the best available CD and DVD players. It allows me to hear details I did not hear before. To be fair, a portable CD player was hooked up to my home theater before I got the 2200, so I probably never heard the system at its best before.

Having two disc capacity is convenient; not as convenient as five disc capacity, but it is a lot smaller that a five disc machine, which made it much easier to hook up in my setup.

Weakness:

Color banding happening when hooked up to a digital tv with a componet cable

Color banding happening when hooked up to a digital tv with a componet cable. This player has been great with my old tv and s video cable. I just bought a HDTV and hooked it up with a monster cable like the other reviewer here, and I see the same problem. I had just assumed it was my Porgressive Scan TV, but alas, its the player!!!!!

Strength:

Plays MP3s as Audio CDs, VCDs, regular CDs, component output for Toshiba Home Theatre TVs

Weakness:

Don't think it supports new DVD-Audio.

Excellent product, plays all DVDs - dual tray for VCDs - even plays CD-RWs (even though the instruction manual says it doesn't!) MP3s burnt to CD-RWs using Nero Burning ROM to create what the Nero Wizard calls an 'Audio CD' works PERFECTLY! The Bitstream output to my AV receiver reproduces a flawless Dolby Pro Logic Surround sound in digital format.

Strength:

Features for price, zoom ability, sharpness of picture, amazing sound quality, dual disc capacity, ease of use

Weakness:

If anything, the remote could be a little more refined, but for a DVD player under $300, this should not be an issue

If anybody is looking to get their first DVD player, or to upgrade form their current model, this 4th generation player is the way to go. You should be able to find it for less than $300, and it has the features that some $500 players don't have. I also believe that the Toshiba 2200 is at that point where a significant increase in money for a player does not wield a similar increase in quality. Sure, you can go ahead and buy a $500 player, but the only thing extra you would get would be a better fast-forward and reverse function, and since I don't watch movies in fast forward, I would stick with the Toshiba. The zoom feature, albeit only able to zoom in 3x, is straight cool. It also has the angle switch feature, and a built in Dolby decoder. The picture quality is far superior to any Sony under $700, and I believe is better than the Pioneers. The sound is absolutely amazing, too.
However, don't let a salesman tell you that it's ability to play HDCD CDs is a big deal. That feature is utterly useless. I don't own any of those CDs, and neither does any of my friends. Still, it is nice to know you can play them if you have to (while your friend's $700 DVD player can't, hah!). Also, the remote's enter button (pressing down on the analog stick) is a little clumbsy, as it will sometimes jump to a different selection before pressing enter, but that is about it.
This is a VERY stong 5 stars in value and overall. Why pay more for a machine that would give you less?

Strength:

Wonderful, inexpensive player with a great picture and solid sound.

Weakness:

Slim on the extra features. Fast forwarding and rewinding is rudimentary.

This is my second DVD player. I was extremely sceptical with the format after my run-in with the infamous A-310 (check out the reviews of that one on this site...) This Toshiba player has fully restored my faith.
It has a MUCH better picture than the Panasonic, never has any problems with any movies (this after about four months of using it fairly regularly), is extremely easy to use and exudes quality for the money.
To put DVD technology in perspective: do you remember when you bought your first portable CD player? They were expensive, fragile, skipped with the slightest bump and then broke after about a month. If you buy a protable CD player now, they are well engineered, tough and so skip resistant you can jog with them. My experience with the Panasonic and then the Toshiba follows this trend. The Toshiba is an excellent, no frills player. For those (the smart ones) who have been waiting for the technology of DVD to mature, your wait is over, and the player you want is the Toshiba 2200.

Strength:

Picture, Audio

Weakness:

Flimsy feel to disc trays

I bought the 2200 over the 1600 for the optical output, which the 1600 doesn't offer (and according to the manual drops 24 bit signals to 16 bit).

The picture is stunning and sound is superb. While I wanted the Sony S7700, I just couldn't justify a $370 price differential.
