    Strength:

2x,8x,and 30x ff and rew, good remote however with small buttons, clear picture, easy menu options, trouble free

    Weakness:

    none so far

I haven't experienced any of the problems that other users have had. I guess I should consider myself lucky because of other users experiences. A very strong unit that has played flawlessly for me. The ff and rew features are very useful. The reliability has been way above average. It also plays DVDs taht my RCA player has problems playing. Although it may be unfair to compare a basic vanilla early stage model to a more current one. I don't use it for music and haven't used the component input yet because my Proscan 50 inch does not have comp inputs. But it is everything I can ask for. Great picture quality although I haven't really noticed a big difference from DVD player to DVD player. Usually the TV has more to do with the picture.

    Strength:

    six disk capacity

    Weakness:

    doesn't work

My DVD player worked for only 4 or 5 weeks then it would not play any disks. I disconnected the power for 30 minutes and it worked for awhile but then started having problems again. I bought a DVD/CD cleaning disk and that seemed to help for awhile but now I can not even get that disk to load. I turned off the power all day and will try again tonight to see if that helps. Email me with any ideas on what to do next.

My Toshiba worked fine for four months and then stopped recognizing disk.
With the carousel full of both DVDs and CDs it would just spin through all six without recognizing any. Sounds like the ‘loading… insert disk’ problem others have had.
    Here’s how I fixed mine:

    1 – Unplug the Unit!
2 – Remove the cover (four screws on the sides and two in the back)
3 – Sit with the back of the player facing you.
4 – Locate the flat ribbon cable running from just behind the player module (rear center) to the player controller (circuit board on the middle left)
5- Unplug this cable at the circuit board
6 – Plug the cable back in making sure that it’s seated well (push near the bottom where the cable is stiffest)
    7 – Replace the cover

    Done.
Once this cable was reseated my unit was able to play all CDs and DVDs again.
I’m guessing the cable/connector assemble is vulnerable to vibration and worked loose over time.

    Disclaimer:
Just because this fixed my unit doesn’t mean it will fix yours.
Opening your unit will void the warranty. Do so at your own risk.
It did turn my 4109 boat anchor into a working DVD player though ;^)

Addition to my last review. I can agree with the recent review that you can "hear" the disc spinning, but more so if the drawer is open. I don't sit near the component rack, so noise is neglible in my view. More so if you have the player in a cabinet with a door.

I used this for CD only use while my TV was being repaired. Playing CDs on this unit has been great! Yes, I've done direct comparisons. I hear things in normal CDs that aren't quite as clear on my old Technics carousel unit. HDCDs are wonderful, but it's a very subtle heightening of the soundstage. Instruments have more presence, but that could just be the mix. Don't expect to hear "hifi" for the first time all over again, just really good sound.

I still give this unit high marks after am month. Points off for the remote. BUT ... I programmed most of the functions needed for CD playing on my universal remote, so I only use the Toshiba remote to watch movies.

    Strength:

HDCD, 6 Disc changer, Excellent sound and picture quality.

    Weakness:

    Small buttons on remote.

I have had this DVD/CD player for 6 months now and I absolutely love it! I use it as my main CD player and I am blown away by how good it sounds. I have put this up against other cd players in the $ 400 - 600 price range and it performs admirably. The HDCD decoding is impressive. Shuffle or random play is not an issue for me because I can't stand noisy interludes while I am listening to music.
I am running the SD4109 through my Denon AVR3200 and Energy Connosieur series speakers. The audio is hooked up using both the analog and coaxial digital input. I find for cd's I prefer using the analog outputs (warmer sound with inproved bass response) and for 5.1 digital sound DVD I use the coaxial digital output. The picture is through the svideo connection ( which is much sharper than the RCA composite input) on my Mitsubishi 27 " TV which is 8 years old but still performs. (although it is a bit small for widescreen DVD.) I just bought a JVC 32" with component video inputs so I am looking forward to seeing if there is a notable difference in picture quality.
I am pleased with the build quality of the SD4109 as it has a good size and weight to it. I have heard rumours that it is made by Onkyo. I like the black enhanced feature when watching widescreen DVD as it makes the black part of the screen less noticable. The audible beep when you press a button on the remote can be turned on or off depending on the users preference. My only complaint is the buttons on the remote are all the same size and are small so operation in the dark is difficult.
One last note... the majority of DVD players on the market will not play CDR's because of the type of reflective surface used on them. Most however will play CDRW's (rewritable CDR's) including the SD4109.
If you are looking for a multiplayer DVD/CD player and random play is not an issue for you this is the best value on the market by far.

a few options yet to be explored

I have used the SD-4109x for over three weeks. Thank God there is no problem with CD unplayable in some slot or unwelcome noise. Perhaps Toshiba has improved their quality control. I had to order and wait for the unit for over one week.

I notice some owners had complained about the unit not having the shuffle option. On the contrary my SD-4109x is programmable to allow a select of up to 28 programs from any combination of CD/DVD and tracks. For those of you complaining about the lack of this feature, read page 28 in the manual. Or perhaps I don’t understand the meaning of shuffle play. The manual is not the greatest but passable.

I purchased this unit without doing any comparison with other brands so I can’t tell if there are any better units. I paid CA$560 for it (including delivery and setup) and am very happy with it so far.

    Weakness:

Failed exactly 365 days after purchaae
    No CD-R capability,

I purchased the 4109XU from a friend who works at Toshiba. The machine worked fine for the first couple of months then was boxed up for about 4 months while renovations were underway (so in a way this time can be subtracted from the over-all system use time).
I found the 4109XU to be very capable in displaying images and I enjoyed all the amenties like zoom etc. It worked well with my Onkyo (TX-DS777). Since this is my first DVD player, I cannot subjectively speak to all it's attributes but I did notice an occasional problem with DVD's - usually nothing turning it off-on wouldn't fix. I had always used DVD's in the machine but about 3 weeks ago I started loading the tray with regular CD's. That's when the real fun started. The first CD to display an error was a Sade best of - I put this initially down to the CD. Things got progressively worse until now I can't use the DVD's either. "..Disk Error.." is the front panel's error message. Toshiba was very helpful and pointed me to a local autorized repair shop. They were very nice and said that it sounds like a problem with the optical pickup. Even though my warranty 'just' expired, Toshiba indicated that they would repair the machine under warranty. I'm crossing my fingers..
Because of obvious problems with this machine - 3 stars for value but 2 overall for the failure. I'll repost later with an update..

    Strength:

Great picture, intuitive interface, easy setup.

    Weakness:

No shuffle play, extremely picky on DVD's that will play, locks up on questional condition DVD's

I realize that many others that have purchased this same DVD player have had no problems whatsoever... however, that was not my experience. I purchased the first one a month ago and had a degrading problem of reliability. First it started taking longer and longer to load a DVD.. then it started scrambling the interface, then it would eventually get to the point where it would take forever (or never at all) to successfully load the DVD's. Slots would sometimes matter, other times, it would work better after warming up. The problems got steadily worse until I returned it. The second one wouldn't play half the DVD's I tried with it. Others would take an eternity to load. I immediately returned this one. I also brought the selection of DVD's that wouldn't play. While at the store I had them try out the DVD's on their demo model. It didn't work for them either. They suspected the DVD was bad (even though it had no visible signs of scratches, pock marks, etc.) We then tried it in a cheap Sony. No problems... it worked great. We then tried it in every DVD player in the store and the Panasonics worked half the time, the Toshiba's never worked and every Sony played perfectly. They then tried their in-store Matrix DVD in the Toshiba... it didn't work either, until the third try.

Perhaps these were all from a bad batch. I have always had alot of confidence in Toshiba. I don't wish to start controversy here, as I'm not claiming that Toshiba makes junk, just that my particular experience has turned me off to Toshiba DVD's for the time being.

I left the store with the Sony 650D (5-disc changer) and have been truly impressed with it.

    Strength:

    Very good picture; CDs sound much better than my old Pioneer CD player; The convenience of being able to load 6 DVDs or CDs at a time;
Excellent support from Toshiba and the retailer.

    Weakness:

    Hard to read numbers on tray; Does not read CDR; ergonomics for the remote are so-so;
    In for repairs twice.

I've had the unit for about six months and I was very happy with both the video and audio capabilities. The video is very clean (I'm using an S-Video connect until I get a TV with component video inputs; zoom and high speed scanning (30X) are handy.

The audio, when playing CDs, is wonderfully warm and detailed (I using a Nakamichi AV-10 receiver and ProAc 2S speakers). For the price and features, I thought it was a very good value. The 6-disk tray is handy to load up with a combination of CDs and DVDs and then sit back and play them.

About three months in, when playing CDs, the player would display "LOADING" and the CD would not play; there was no problem with any of the CDs. The unit went back to Toshiba for service and was fixed.

About 5 months in, DVDs playing would lose their audio tracks for 5 seconds at time every 15 seconds. Unit went back to Toshiba and came back repaired. My retailer (Stereo Plus Kanata) tested the unit in-store before returning it to me and found that the problem persisted. They contacted Toshiba and arranged to provide me with a new unit - the 3205. I will likely go with the 4205, which will enable me to play CDRs; and I'm hoping that the remote that comes with this unit is better than the one that came with the 4109.

So from a service perspective I'm happy; and when the unit was playing, the a/v result was very good. It may have been that I just got a bad unit.

Certainly can be recommended as good value and for the convenience. Kudos to Toshiba and the retailer.
