I must say I'm extremely impressed at these speakers. For $360 at Circuit City they are a steal and a half. I'm currently in college and these are perfect for a dorm room. If you like rap, rock/metal, and alternative music I highly recommend the DCM's because they can kick out some serious bass. Also, if you are looking for a relatively good priced surround system the DCM's would go great as the main floor-standing speakers. I would give them 4 stars on the sound output but 5 on the value. Therefore, I giving them 5 because 4 wouldn't do them justice.

Cerwin Vega Killers. There are three types of speakers in this world. Ones that attempt to be loud and sensitive, like DCM and MTX. Ones that are serious about lifelike reproduction like NHT, Boston, Wilson, Polk, B&W (just to name a few). Ones that live off there name-- Cerwin Vega and Bose-- and offer half the performance at the same price as all the others. This is why I call the DCM's the Cerwin Vega Killers, because they lots less, and sound lots better. Well, as they say, "you gots some of thems Bosies? (DUH)."

These are the best speakers I have heard for the money. You can get them at Circuit City for 189.99 each. Before I got the DCM speakers I had the Cerwin-Vega VS-120. At the time I thought that the Cerwin-Vegas at Good Guys for 199.99 each were the best speakers for the price, I was wrong. It seems that the DCM KX-12 series two and the Cerwin-Vega VS-120 are supposed to be direct competitors. In this contest, DCM wins. The DCM speakers have tighter and punchier bass. The Vegas seem muddy and mushy compared the DCM. The midrange on the DCM is a different design than the Vega. The larger DCM midrange is designed to play lows and mids. It makes the midrange work harder but the sound is punchier in the upper bass and smoother in the mids, rather than the Cerwin-Vega's rough sounding midrange. I am a little concerned about the fact that the DCM's mid/low driver moves in and out more than the woofer, but it is not a major promlem. The tweeter in the DCM is a horn loaded bullet tweeter, rather than the Vega's dome tweeter. The DCM's highs are a little clearer than the Vega's. Overall, The DCM has a more open sound and is a higher quality speaker than Cerwin-Vega.

If you go back to the first review of these speakers from Nov. 1997, you'll see my original opinion of DCM KX 12 Series 2 speakers. After a year and a half with these speakers, I still must say they are the best for the money. I'm living in a house now and can really crank them up. 3/4 volume on my 100 watt RMS per channel JVC receiver and I can't be in the same room. 2/3 volume is great. I agree the highs are a bit weak for some ears but I just turn up the treble and they sound great. I am thinking of buying another pair so I'll have 4 (just to shake the house to pieces). Go to Circuit City and listen for yourself.

As with other people here, I walked in to Circuit City about 6 months ago expecting to walk out with a nice set of Bose or Infinity. I listened to various types of music and compared these to teh 700 bucks a pair infinity speakers. True, the Infinity has a higher pitch range, but they have NO bass - even with their 12in woofers. I know plenty of people with Bose speakers and they are jealous of my DCM's when we pop in a DVD. There is no need for a subwoofer - these suckers have massive 12 in woofers PLUS dual ports! The windows rattle, teh floor shakes, and ya can't hear anyone else near ya talking...then the neighbors form the next building over in the dorms drop by and tell us to turn em down! Hey, not my fault if Top Gun is my main movie to show these suckers off with. They were hooked up to a low-end Kenwood Dolby Digital receiver, and they still rocked. If ya listen to classical, go with infinity. If ya want movies and listen to classic rock/rock/rap/heavy metal...get the DCM's! Now I have them hooked up to an older Yamaha ProLogic receiver and a Sony CDP-CX300 disc changer (another great buy) and listen to everythign from Tool and Metallica to Van Morrison. Even at low volumes the bass has the tangible punch. I admit the bullet tweeter is a bit inadequare for classical music but you can;t really tell the difference when ya get the whole musical experience form these speakers. You cna always buy a pair of reference speakers to throw off teh higher pittches...or a good center channel. Considering the audible range is about 20Hz to 25kHz, and these suckers go down to 20Hz easily, there is no need for that subwoofer for that .1 channel for Dolby Digital. These can handle the signal being they are rated at 250 watts and with very high sensitivity (even higher than infinity and every other brand I looked at) you don't need a high powered receiver. These things are not bulky at all if you consider the circumstnaces: a)they DO have a 12 inch woofer so you need to put it somewhere - ya can;t fit 12 inches of speaker on a 8 inch face like some pple seem to think you can; b)they are rather deep because the bass ports have to go somewhere; c)they are great for putting things on like a vase or somethign else - preferably something that won't break though when they start to vibrate from bass :P ; d)they look great and fit in with any type of decor (not loud or tacky looking at all). Overall...an AMAZING buy and I still wonder if I will bother using that 1 year upgrade deal from Circuit City....

I agree with Alpha. These may be ok (maybe) for the "receiver" crowd. But because of all their "Grade Creep" these things end up on the reccomended list?
Please a cheap pair of B&W 302's or PSB 300i's sound much better

I've got to agree 100% with Eric. I've had these speakers for about 2 yrs now and still have not heard any other speaker(in the price range!) come close to the DCM's. When I first got them, I hooked both these and my old speakers the my old amp. Switching between A and B the sound level differnce (same vol. setting) was amazing! The DCM's played louder and cleaner (efficiency is quite good).
It seems that some people get so anal about imaging that they lose sight of the fact that these are speakers under $400 bucks. Yeah it is nice to sit in your imported leather easy chair and say "Ohh did you hear that cymbal crash off to my left? Or the ting of a triangle at the 2 0'clock postition?. But hell, for the most part, I wanna ROCK! and thats something these DCM's do very well.

For the price that you can get these speakers for, they are amazing. You don't need a sub if you are using these for just music. These speakers are so effiecient too! They shake the whole house even on a low volume. Great product overall!
