Strength:

Bass Flexibility, great flat response, bipolar design, impressive soundstage

I've been testing out DT's speaker line for the past ten years at my local Electronics store and saving my pennies to invest in some of their speakers. My first choice would have been to go with the BP2000 or 2002, but due to the fact that my home is smaller I settled on the PB2004TL (the 2004TL has the 250W built in amp rather than the 125W amp, but still has the 10" woofer).

I've tested out pretty much every line of reputable speakers that are attainable to the working class guy like me, and DT in my opinion is thousands of dollars better in value than anything sonically in the same price class. If my home was bigger I would have gone with the larger subwoofer speakers, but the quality will stay consistent as long as you get the right speaker for the right room. They even beat many of the THX certified speakers I tested, and since they have a bipolar design they might as well have a THX label on them.

I save a lot of money staying home for my movies.

Strength:

Overall sound range and clarity

Weakness:

real bottom end bass

This review is actually for the 2004TL. Great speaker with absolutly unbelievable clarity. Other reviews have suggested that the mid and high end clarity gets even better after break in. But I can't see how it gets much better. The only slight weakness may be that they do not reach way down to the real low octives of Bass, but I am not sure if that is the speaker or the Reciever. I am using the Arcam AV100 Reciever with these, and Arcam is not known for its real deep Bass. Anyways, I am getting all the Bass that I would ever want (The walls still shake!!), but I could see where some would want more. In those circumstances I would suggest combining the 2004TL's with at least a 15 or 18" sub. I would never want to scrafice the clarity these give for the low end bass.

I am using these 2004TL's with a CRS2300 center channel and BP2X surrounds. The reciever is the Arcam AV100 and a Arcam DV88 DVD player round out the system. I could not be happier with the package.

Strength:

Excellent bass, clarity and precision

Weakness:

Definite need to breakin

First found out about Def Tech when I was looking for bipolar surrounds. Really liked the BP 2X. Now have BP2004TL, C/L/R2002, BP 2X and a Promonitor 100 center back hooked up to Onkyo 989 and Toshiba 6200. I had looked at some electrostatic speakers earlier. When I first hooked up the BP2004's, the bass was tight, solid, but overpowering. I thought I had made a mistake. However, after several days of relatively louder playing, the midrange and uppers "blossomed". The speakers now have an excellent range, with definitely superior sound stage , clarity and precision. Best speakers I've heard, regardless of price. I was going to give it a 4 due to the need to break it in, but I think the real low numbers given previously are undeserved, so I am giving thema 5.

Strength:

Very clean look. Outstanding low end. Very easy to setup and fine tune.

Weakness:

They seem a little "bright" at first.

Replaced a pair of Infinityn RS-5. I am using them with a Nakamichi AV-10 and Pro 80's as my rear channel. The manual suggested a setting of 12:30 for the sub output... Way too much.

There is no need for an additional sub with this speaker. You will have far more low end than you would expect with a 10" driver. The speaker, even at very low volumes has a very deep, rich base that you can feel and hear. I have a 15" sub that does not come close in quality or quanity. I have the speakers 13' apart, 15" from the rear wall. I do not have them toed in. They seemed to bright when I had them angled to the listener.

I have been sampleing dozens of CD's as well as DVD movies. They work extreamly well with all types of music. My pipe organ CD's are a real kick.

I always thought that a "break-in" period was a bunch of bunk. After one week, they sound smoother and less harsh. U-571 in DTS is a real good one to piss off the neighboors.

As a Casual Listener bordering on Audio Enthusiast I say these speakers surpass any other speaker in their price range. I get a kick out of my friends reactions, they are blown away. For my small living room I get better results with the bass pointing inwards. Bottom line is I enjoy them tremendously and that's all that counts baby!

Strength:

Strong Bass; Clairty

Weakness:

Not available in Charlotte any more

I guess that wasn't really a weakness. Oh well. I'm actually writing a review for the 2004TL. I have had these less than a week and have enjoyed every moment of it. My biggest problem is being at school and wanting to be home just so I can listen to them. I plan on getting the DefTec C/L/R 2300 for the center chanell and also some of the DefTec surrounds to complete the system. These are far better then Bose 201 IV speakers that were my front speakers (for the time being they are the backs and not doing to bad of a job; they blend in fairly well). The rest of my system is as follows:

Sony Reciver: STR-DE845
Sony 200 CD Player: CDP-CX235
Sony DVD: DVP-S360
Monster Cable Connecting it all

This system is far from complete but not to bad for someone who is still in highschool. And no mommy and daddy didn't pay for it.

I'm having a lot of trouble finding a decent place to audition speakers. The first time I had to figure out how to work the sound room by myself because the Circuit City "help" couldn't be found. I was actually pretty happy about that. Having to argue with a sales rep about why I should listen to MY CD's at MY volume level on MY favorite tracks would have made the experience useless. None of the speakers were set up properly. Most of them were 2 to 3 feet apart. But I was finally able to sample a few speakers using a mid-range Harmon Kardon A/V receiver. I knew the Polks, so I listened to a few of those. But next to the Infinity RS 4's and 5's, I thought they were muddy and lacked a strong enough low end even for punctuated men's acapella singing, not to mention the deep trancy techno of Robert Miles. Later, at a totally different place, I listened to B&W's (which were nice and warm with very enjoyable midrange and highs but not strong enough in the low end for techno) and Polks. I also heard a variety of DefTechs (recommended by the sales person). At last I listened to the BP2004's. They were a good 18 feet apart, so the imaging was pretty bad. But the range of sound was wonderful! Full rich acapella male voices, sharp quick electronic snares with nearly subsonic pounding techno. I heard parts of my music for the first time on nice speakers. But until I listened to it on those 2004's, I thought the low driving bass in one track was just flat droning bass. Turns out, it has a melody with subtle changes in pitch! For comparison, I listened to the Infinity RS10's across the room. I would definitely agree with Gerard Masters about the treble difference between the Infinitys and the DefTechs. But where he felt the bass of the DefTechs was overpowering, I felt the Infinity's treble overpowered the bass. I could hear that bass line melody, but the subtle shifts in pitch were hard to pick out. But I am definitely going back for a second listen. In fact, I'm going to find a different place that has a better set up. Some of this difference could easily have been the setup. I have a very sensitive ear, but I'm not experienced enough to be familiar with the degree to which room accoustics and speaker placement can affect my listening experience. Can anyone recommend a good place to test speakers in Manhattan?
By the way, I must have listen to 10 minutes of that techno track on the Infinity RS10's. Then some men's acapella (Möxy Fruvous: Bargainville). But as soon as we played that techno on the BP2004's, a sizable crowd gathered. I had to answer questions about the CD for a few minutes after listening before the crowd would let me leave! I think the crowd has spoken.

I just bought a pair of the BP 2004 and am I impressed! I looked at Infinity Overture 1 - 3, Eosone 1000, NHT, etc... I was looking for a great speaker to build on for a while... These thing fill my main room with great sound but the best part is that they fill all adjecent rooms with the volume up loud enough with clean crisp music. These speakers are very clean and crsip. In HT mode they are excellent - I heard things I never heard before with my Klipsch.
If your looking at speakers check these out, you won't be disappointed.

Incredible bass, superior clarity, exceptional value.

The Def Tech 2004 are truely a great speaker. The sound stage is absolutely huge! I have my home theater setup in a very large room and the 2004s completely immerse the room with sound. The bass is just as impressive, the room absolutely shakes when you're in home theater mode (e.g. The Matrix). These speakers outperformed many other speakers I listened to and when you account for the 2004s exceptional value - they just blow the competition away. I recommend you take a listen for yourself...you won't be disappointed.

Great sound. Fills the listening area. The built in sub sounds clean and produces excellent bass for a 10 " sub. An adjustable crossover would have been nice, but you have to go up to the BP-2000s for that. Auto on/off on subs is great too. I think these speakers actually sound a bit better than the BP-2002s. The 2002s have the same mid-range drivers and tweeters, but have a built in 12 " sub in each tower. The mid-range seems to get a bit, whereas in the 2004, the mid-response in clear and clean. Paired with a Yamaha DSP-A1, C/L/R 2002 Center, BP-2X Rear Effects, and BP-2X Front Effects, Movies are simply overwhelming, and of course, music is excellent too. For my tastes at least; I have noticed some others posting in this review seem to just like to bash things that son't fit their definition of "Proper Head-IN-The-Vice" speakers. I, for one, won't bash a product that I have not owned or have done an extensive in-home test on. For those looking for pricing, I talked the salesman (Ultimate Electronics) down to $590 each, so the price was fantastic. Just keep trying, you WILL find a salesman hungry enough to make some money rather than no money. Rob.
