Power cord could be longer?

I started looking for a HT system about a year before I made my purchase. We (my wife and I) listened to many different speakers Mirage (OM-9), B&W (602 s2), PSB (Stratus Bronze), Paradigm (Studio 60), Mission, Energy and literally 10’s of other speakers that after the first listen never got any serious consideration. I liked all of the speakers listed above and prefer them in the order presented, and on any given day could most definitely lived with any of them, well maybe not any of them. While all of these speakers sounded good at first listen, after a while or at different volumes I grew tired of the sound, some of them started to sound harsh.

So why the Def Techs? It was hard to describe but no matter where we listened to them, they sounded excellent. The sound stage was huge, image excellent, bass was always clear and precise, never muddy, if you turn up the built in subs they will get boomy, but the is not a fault of the speaker. The mid range is full and detailed, highs are clear and pristine, but never to bright. While many of the speakers we auditioned sounded great for HT, they were not equal to the Def Techs for music. I found this rather interesting as the Def Techs are designed more for HT than music.

Definitive Technology does a lot testing and tuning at NRC in Canada to get their speakers voiced perfectly. The NRC is a anechoic chamber that alows for real world modeling and analysis. Not many manufacturers do this, most of them just do computer modeling.(This is according to Darryl Wilkinson, November 2000 article in HT mag)

Watching movies voices come through clearly, as you get enveloped in the sounds of the movie, during Jurassic Park III it felt like I was in the jungle and the unseen dinosaur was entering the room, sending shivers up my spine. While listening to Pink Floyd’s intro to Welcome to the Machine, the room shook, Acoustic Alchemy sounded excellent reproducing the guitar perfectly, Eric Clapton’s unplugged sound like your in the same room with the band. I’m listening to all of my CD’s again and purchasing new ones just to listen to my system. In other words, I love these speakers. Physically small but audibly huge!

I’m a musician and have worked with some large PA sound systems (10000 of 1000’s of watts) costing 100 of 1000’s of dollars. I know what music is supposed to sound like live. I understand what to listen for in music and Def Tech delivers.

There may be better speakers out there, but not at this price!

One often over looked item when shopping for speakers is manufactures support. I’m pleased to say that Definitive Technology responded quickly and courteously to my email questions, offering good and accurate advise.

Strength:

Amazing sound and big base for 8" woofers

Weakness:

None for the price

I can't say enough about these speakers. I was in the market for a home theater system and good speakers ware my first concern. I did not have a huge budget so I wanted to find a complete matched surround system that would not break the bank. After lots of research (I think I read about every speaker review on this site, and picked up about every home theater mag) I found these babies. I visited one of the only two definitive dealers in Missouri to give them a try. I was amazed in the store (worst listening environment ever) at how expansive the sound from the two main speakers seemed to be. I was sold on the bipolar design right there. Unfortunately, that store did not treat me very well so I ended up waiting till I could drive across the state to get mine at the other store.
When I got them home I hooked them up immediately. As you know there are an 8" powered sub in each tower (and one in the 2300 center). You can hook them up in two ways. 1)You can simply wire up the high power outs on your receiver to each speaker and set the receiver to "large" or "full" front speakers so that the full range is sent out to these speakers. 2)You can run your sub (use a Y connector) out to a port on each speaker. I chose the first option only because I did not have enough cable to send the sub out to each speaker. According to the dealer both will work fine but if you have the cable I would go for option two.
So how do they sound? In a word, amazing. My roommate is big into rap so we ramped up a few of his favorite base heavy tunes and gave them a run. I was blown away by the amount of base they were able to put out. Pictures in the bedroom were rattling. I also have never experienced any of the problems some people have seem to have with the woofers blowing, and I have had these babies loud! Watching DVD's only makes the experience better. These speakers fill the room with sound. When I put in Saving Private Ryan people start ducking and jumping at the explosions and bullets.
Conclusion - best speakers you can get for the money, it’s that simple. These speakers should be with me for a long time. The great thing about them also is that if you ever what to upgrade you can simply move the BP2006s to the rear and throw some BP2000s up front. These are great speakers that look classy and sound like twice the money. I could not be happier with my purchase. No regrets.

Strength:

Adequate bass for an 8" sub. Turns a small room into a concert hall.

Weakness:

Had to return one because the woofer blew, but was replaced extremely fast

These speakers, along with the entire Def. Tech lineup, kick some major arse. These speakers are a HUGE upgrade to my previous Infinity bookshelf/ sub. setup. When combined with matching center and rears from Def. Tech, this makes movies and music come to life.
The highs and mids bring out little nuances that I have never heard before in recording. These sound great, and the Home Theater Magazine review was right on point. These are worth the cost of admission, even if paying retail.
The only problem I had was one of the woofers blew within a month, but the replacement part was in in less than a week.
These towers look and sound amazing, I can't wait to get a SACD player hooked up to them and test all of the speakers out.

Strength:

soundstage, clarity, size, price

Weakness:

aesthetics are debatable

Unlike most other reviewers of this product I wanted speakers for music only, I use a separate setup for HT. The room is fairly large, 17 X 29 and acoustically challenging due one long wall being glass, the other fabric.

I had a ballpark target of $1000/pr but was prepared to spend twice that amount if a product could convince me it was worth the extra money. I think I listened to every speaker in town in that price range. I was surprised at how underwhelmed I was with most of them. There's a lot of mediocrity out there.

To be honest, I didn't really expect to like the Def Techs. Bipolar struck me as "gimmicky", their ads are a bit hard-sell, and I would have preferred woodgrain cabinetry. But the sound kept bringing me back. I'd go out and audition 2 or 3 speakers, then come back to hear the Def Techs again. The more speakers I tried, the more it seemed a no-brainer. Probably the biggest single difference was the size of the bipolar soundstage. Many of the conventional speakers sounded decent in the "sweet spot" but lost punch and clarity when you moved just a few feet away. The Def Techs sound good almost anywhere.

I thought hard about the 2002's due to my room size but in the end went with the 2006's on price and because the smaller size provided better harmony (of the marital variety--this is my wife's living room we're talking about). I figured I could aways use the 2006's in my HT setup if they bombed for music.

They didn't. I've had them about two months and am delighted. They were fairly brassy right out of the box but smoothed out nicely in a couple of weeks. The bi-polar design really fills the room but still gives excellent stereo separation. Highs and mids are crisp and clean at all volume levels. I'm hearing detail I never heard before (including flaws) on virtually every recording. Vocal reproduction is outstanding. Bass is powerful (for 8 inchers); I've set them well below manufacturers recommended intial setting even though most of my listening is hard rock. And I LOVE not having extra cabinets for the powered subs. I'm guessing they're even better for HT where you want the bass to really rumble. Would the 2002's have been better still? Sure, particularly in this size room, if you aren't concerned with the extra size and money.

Bottom line? Well, I started out not expecting to like Def Tech's but after testing everything I could find I ended up buying the 2006's over speakers costing almost twice as much. Every day I can't wait to get home and fire 'em up, which is basically the only measure that matters. Each listener is different and a lot of people seem to either love bipolar or hate it. All I'd say is I strongly recommend you give them a listen before buying speakers in this price range.

Since my initial review of a first pair of these speakers for great music listening, I now have a second pair and a C/L/R 2300 as a center channel speaker, and am using the five speakers for Home Theater as well. My components are as follows:
Yamaha DSP-A1 integrated amp
Yamaha C996 DVD player
Mitsubishi Platinum Plus WS-55857 55inch HDTV 16:9 Aspect
Def Technology/Four 2006tl Towers, Mains and Rears
Def Technology/One C/L/R 2300 Center
I can't imagine it being any better than this. My listening room is 15 X 16 and I have all four sub-woofer speakers facing outward which broadens the spatiousness and I believe the incredible sound stage. I stand the center channel speaker vertically on top of the TV. It too has a powered sub. This home theater and music listening arrangement is better than any public movie theater chain can even approach. The DTS, Dolby Digital, Anamorphic DVDs will make your heart stop. I can't stop listening to jazz r and my music interests are vast.
My amplifier is 110 watts per channel and this is a good ball park to be in(give or take 30 watts). Happy listening and viewing!!

Strength:

Smooth Sound...Deep Soundstage...DEPTH..They don't hurt my ears after 2 hours..Subwoofers are a plus...The great deal I scored on them...MORE LATER...

Weakness:

I've heard better for two channel music...But what is the definition of better ??? Bass not as defined as I had Hoped

Here's the gig...I looked so Fu.... Long for a speaker that does both two channel music and home theatre perfect...Guess what..they don't exist. These Def Techs are the closest I could find to satisfy me in both arenas. Oh yeah, JUst to be fair, I've only used these babies for about 3 weeks.
BTW...No one wanted to deal on Def Techs...I think def tech wants full price and the status that comes along with that. One dealer told me that def tech sent a memo to all it's dealers telling them not to discount their speakers or run the risk of them pulling there dealership...I've never paid full retail for anything (except gas & food) & I wasn't going to start now.. So I found Ultimate Electronics.

1. I have heard some incredible speaks for music....
If you want an incredible music speaker, go with
Dynaudio 50 for mains (you can't beat these for the price..trust me) and then get a good matching sub..don't ask me how to pick a good sub. Get one that sounds good with the speaks...simple yeah right.
The dynaudios definatley sounded BETTER than my def techs. I had them both in the same room, on the same ht receiver (ARCAM AVR100) and playing the same music. Th dynaudios sounded alive....The def techs sounded full bodied. The dynaudios were so clear and spacious yet seperated the instruments perfectly. The def techs did all of this too, just not as good. I would say about 90% as good. I was ready to take my def techs back & then I said...Lets put on a movie.....

That was when I made the decision to keep the def techs. You can't beat the bi-polar design for home theatre...
For the amount of money I spent, I can't go wrong with these wonderful speakers....Sure I've heard better...monitor one WOW $1000. each WOW WOW...But if you want home theatre, there is no better way to go for the price.

AS for the other speaks I auditioned:
Infinity...Lifeless Boring
Cervin Vega...shouldn't even be mentioned. except for rock, LOUD ROCK..
Polk...Not bad..
Bose....BIG JOKE, those guys are laughing all the way to the bank
Gallo...I would recomend these if space is a problem..They sound great
Monitor One...MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY Honestly, The Dynaudios come real real close to these in two channel music
Dynaudios...Simply superb for music, matched with a good sub
Bostons...My second choice for HT & Music Combined but the def techs just sounded better

I will leave you with this...I wish I could afford two seperate speaker systems...But I can't.

Here's what I bought
Def Techs BP 2006TL (mains)
Def Tech clr 2500 (center..This Kicks Ass)
Def Tech PF15TL+ (Sub)
Def Techs BP2X (rears)
Arcam avr100 (wow BUY THIS)
Marantz Dv7010...(dvd clear and colorful...Sounded better than the NAD 540 cd player for Music..So I bought it to do both)

Happy Hunting...

PS. Ask for Jeremy in home theatre..He will cut you a great deal.

Strength:

These are the best sounding speakers I've ever had.

Weakness:

None that I'm aware of.

Mainly because of the review in HT magazine, I purchased four of the towers and the center all at once. The towers for the left right surround work out simply wonderful. The setup I have is:
Zenith 64" HDTV
Toshiba 2300 DVD
Def 2006 towers(4)
Def center
Def PF 1800 Subwoofer
Def PF 1500 TL Subwoofer
Yamaha back surround(2)
Integra 9.1 reciever
With 1125 watts of bass(towers and center set to large), and
1000 more watts from the 2 subwoofers, man I wannna tell you
when I played "Saving Private Ryan", I flinched a couple times
from the bombs and bullets flying around. My high-end
7.1 channel reciever really takes advantage of these speakers. The bass shakes my couch, and people are just
flabergasted at the sound quality. Me too. I play action
scenes over not neccesarily to see them but to hear them! "The
Patriot" played in THX surr Ex mode made two pictures jump off my wall at the first battle scene.(I had it turned up
a little too loud, I know.) Get these speakers, you won't
be dissapointed.

Weakness:

break-in period

I have now owned the BP2006TL for a month and a half and am astonished at how better and better these speakers are sounding every day. I have always appreciated music but would rather watch television or movies than listening to music. But since purchasing these Def Tech babies I am now keeping the TV off and playing all of my CDs, some which never came out of the plastic cellophane. There are instruments that I am hearing for the first time that I never knew existed in a previously listened to tracks. It is amazing that speakers can play music this well. If I could, I would listen to them on all day.

My receiver, a Sony V444ES, is not a high-end receiver by no means, but the two together produces beautiful music. My music taste runs the gamut and I throw every thing at them: Mozart, String instruments, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Kenny G, Classic rock, modern rock, everything except the kitchen sink and the two together handle them all with ease.

If you like music, then you will like HT more because these speakers can make your neighbors very unfriendly real quick and bring the cops to your door especially if your preference is late night movies on weekends. My set up right now is just the BP2006TL as mains but I am still able to appreciate the clarity and presence of dialogue. There are times when I think a knock at the door or some other sound is coming from outside when the speakers are the culprits. That is how realistic they are.

My first week of ownership I was inpatient wanting perfect sound right away. Believe the Def Tech people, you really need 40 – 60 hours of break-in. As indicated in my first review a month ago I purchased these based on a recommendation in Home Theater magazine and I am beginning to understand why the reviewer raved about these speakers.

The soundstage is huge and my listening area is about 10’ X 20’ and gets overwhelm at times when I play below 40dB. My speakers are slightly toed in with subwoofers facing out. I have them bi-wired with Monster Cable (?)

I like the BP2006TL because of the great natural sound and the value. I am becoming more aware of the kind of discussion that Def Tech bipolar is generating. Some people like them and some do not. As a new inductee to this world, I love them. When I first entered the market for speakers I first considered BOSE, JBL, Polk Audio, Boston Acoustics and Vienna Acoustics. The Vienna Acoustics Mozart would have been my next choice if not for the price. Down the road I would like to buy the BP2002TL or BP2004TL for mains and push the BP2006TL to the rears.

This, of course, is my opinion for I think listening is a really subjective thing but give the BP2006TL a try and see what you think. Here’s to good listening!

My present set-up:

Sony V444ES A/V receiver
Sony DP 660 DVD player
Definitive Tech BP2006TL – Mains
Definitive Tech C/L/R 2300 – (future purchase - in 2 weeks)
JVC 27” Direct view
Monster Cable

Every review that I read was true! These speakers sound better the longer I have them. My main concern was that they played music excellently. Boy do they ever! The bipolar design makes the soundstage huge. The subwoofer makes the sofa shake when I am watching movies and it is perfect when I listen to music. The bass is tight but not overwhelming on music. But on movies it shakes the foundation. These speakers are the perfect combination that I was looking for, dynamite music and killer home theater! Run, don't walk to buy these babies, you wont be dissapointed.
