Strength:

Good bass, nice mid range punch, steroe imaging good, build/looks, cheap.

Weakness:

Finish is easily damaged, front baffle vibrates a little. Tweeter unprotected. Bass driver can be overdriven too easily. Can peak at high freqs.

Bought these Mission 701 speakers for £80 from richer sounds thats $110 at a local hi fi store. Out of box they were kinda heavy, i had to cary them to my car 2 blocks away, hurtmy arms a bit. They looks fine, I would have bought beach as black it a bit underdone. Nice though, they shine a bit when polished, and are well constructed from 19mm chipboard. Inside is a foam back to prevent echoes inside, includes front firing port, about 8cm long at 6cm diameter. Front baffle constructed from ABS injection moulded plastic at 3mm thickness. Tweeter a fabric soft dome at 25mm coil point, and 28mm at surround point. Bass driver uses glas composite material, light but flexes a little, like polypropelene, uses hard plastic for frame, and unshielded but magnet will not effect TVs at 10cm distance. Finished in vinyl rap, the joins come away a little, and can be scratched easy. The front baffle edges are curved, and make it look smaller. Grill uses plastic frame with graphite/coal material colour. Bass driver uses rubber surround for toughness, and screwed like tweeter with four 2mm screws with star heads. Internal crossover is a rated 4Khz or less, uses high quality components copper inductors and copper wireing from crossover to woofer/tweeter. The drive units are both made by Mission, and garantee is standard 1 year P&S. Rear terminals have one pair + & - sockets, at first they seemed not to take bananas but plastic pin can be rmoved. Also take bare wire, or flat heads. Also available in smaller Mission 700 model, but use a smaller woofer, and smaller ports (2). This 701 model uses 16.5cm Mid/bass woofer, with a 120mm cone area. Voice coil is 20mm diameter, magnet is 80mm diameter. Produces 58 ~ 20,000Hz at 89dB/w/m +/-3dB which is pretty good considering reletively low cost.
Sound quality above par, strong bass with out use of tone controls gives deep exursion and a good level of punch, also in midrange which is detailed and strong. Treble a little over done but quite listenable at lower levels, detailed and tweeter performes very well despite simple deisgn. Stereo imaging good, strong left/right pan and deep centre stage, as well as good around the speaker sounds. POrt makes little noise only at peak exursion of driver. Lower levels are better for bass, the driver can become overdriven easy.
Comapred to competion these are well built and good sounding speakers, at the price I payed they are more than worth it. Cost £180 two years ago, so no wonder. Extremesound for little money. Cheaper than the competion aboe and sound almost as good. Well worth the money.

Strength:

Good stereo image

Weakness:

Too much low bass

Couldn't resist this pair of speakers for this price. Probably this model is "end of life". I even didn't listen to them at the store. At home I connected the to my existing stereo-set (I will use the Missions at the office). I expected a lot of difference compared to my Vifa speakers but the Missions performed pretty good. I don't like too much high (it hurts), the 701 are just a little too loud in the high ranges for my ears, but I think you can't blame the speakers, its just my taste. I tried the speakers on two amplifiers, I recommend at least 50W.

What I dont like ís the "mid bass", the speakers really try to do a good job in the low range but now and then they start to produce that "booming" sound. I didn't move the speakers around which is absolutely necessary to find the right spot. Maybe the bass will be better then.

I use to build my own speakers, good sound for less money. But I never will be able to build something simmilar to the Mission's for the same price. Use a good ampfilier and you won't regret buying them.

Strength:

very crisp clear highs,medium lows

Weakness:

lacks a little mid range, cabinet finish not the best.

m-71 new for 2001 replaces 701`s: As I mentioned in my receiver reveiw I was in the market for a new digital receiver. I went to hi-fi center to shop for a speaker and receiver combo, I saw alot of combo`s. I looked at sound design and Jbl, the Mission`s really seem to catch my ear.
They play very well with a sub-woofer backing them up. And another good thing about them they come comeplete with a full 5 year waranty. Very good speaker I would recomend them to anyone who has an ear for good sound.

Strength:

Clear high frequency and smooth. Not outstanding, but good midrange performance. I do not have a problem with the cabinets as reported by others.

Weakness:

Not any audio weaknesses at this price. The cabinet finish is cheap.

Reported over a year ago. Still unbeatable for the price. Amazing how much 'junk' out in the market place for more money! These speakers will easily outplay their 'big brother' M703s and I am not the only one who knows this. The speaker requires at least 200 hours break-in. I have not found these for sale lately, but the Denon line is supposed to be the same product. If you are limited budget, this is the speaker you want.

Strength:

Very impressive clarity in mid-high and in high frequencies. Front mounted port is well received in a speaker of this price range.

Weakness:

No major weaknesses.

Being on a tight budget, I listened to many sets of speakers in the sub-$500 price range (Australian) and eventually purchased this pair of missions for $530. I am very happy with my purchase.

I compared these speakers against others such as Polk RT series, Tannoy Mercury series (namely the M2) and some others.

I found that the clarity of the sound in mid-high and high frequencies was a bit suspect in all but the Mission and Tannoy. The Mission also have a front bass port at the bottom and the bass driver is mounted at the top. This allows bass and mid-bass to be a bit more coherent and a bit less coloured by the characteristics of my room.

I give this speaker an overall rating of 5 because in my opinion it is the best bookshelf/stand mount speaker for less than $600. If you are on a larger budget, I'd recommend other Mission speakers such as the 77 series.

Weakness:

No miracle for me :(

Get the pair emotionaly. Beech in color and at SGD$260, I would say it's rather competitively priced. see(http://dxyong.bizland.com/mission1.jpg)

However the rule of paying peanut you get peanut still apply and not to my surprise, they sound like a $260 should. I had to throw in a 100W KEF-30B subwoofer to increase the depth, but that sets me back another SGD$650(US$370), more than double my initial investment :(

Nevertheless the cube sounds bright and good for vocal and high pitch. If you like warm, this is it. But pop music and Vengaboy lover like me will be dissapointed by the lack of boom. It even gave me clipping sounds when I crank up the volume. Maybe my 150W Kenwood KR990 was the culprit. I need to find another amp before I can conclude anything at this stage. I am actually hunting for a new amp and might post the follow up once I got it :)

Perhaps it's more suitable for smaller room. In larger room like mine(40m2), I advice you to top up some and get a decent pair of floor standing. My 3 yrs old JBL KRV308 has no problem to punch the room without any bass aid. But of coz both of them are in different league. I am just trying to tell you there is no miracle in speaker selection :) In my scenario, I guess I am going to use them for my rear speaker.

Last but not least, if you looking into similar priced and category speaker, I would say it performs up to expection. Nevertheless I recommend this to entry level and budget buyer, you will not find a more beautiful, and better sound speaker than this.

Strength:

Bass, mid-range, high's, incredible punch, quality construction

Weakness:

weren't free ;-)

Bought these for a song on an auction site. Mission is probably the best kept speaker manufacturer secret this side of the Atlantic. First had the pleasure to hear an old pair of Mission 707's in Canada many years ago, and didn't hear of the brand name in the states until recently.

Amazing that such sound can come from such a small box. Someone earlier said that the mid-range was lacking -- I disagree!! Snares never sounded so good. You can hear the wood and metal on a rimshot...Being a part-time musician, I can even hear the "newness" of a bassist's round wound strings, the clarity of new cymbals...I could go on and on -listen to Sting's Nothing Like the Sun and listen to the nylon stringed Spanish guitar on Fragile...surreal airiness

And the air these things move! They seem to have an otherworldy presence in the room. My huge floor standing Wharfedales can't drive air the way these babies do. Just stunning all around performers.

Buy these speakers and you get the same tweeter and woofer as are found on their more expensive 700 series speakers. It really is a great deal as is evidenced by the many 5 star ratings.

Naturally I ordered the 701s to accompany my 704s. They make great surrounds. They have rich bass and sweet mids and highs. Playing music on 5-channel stereo is a plus with these speakers. Although I’m sure they would make great mains, I recommend the 701s for rear speaker use.
