Strength:

Price if purchased in Canada. Minimal cabinet resonance.

Weakness:

Speaker grill cloth slackened over time due to weakening glue.

I spent about three months looking for a pair of speakers that would satisfy my financial concerns but also maximise my listening enjoyment. At the time of purchase, approxiamtely 3-4 years ago, I had never heard of this company. I spent many hours evaluating them on different types of music and comparing others at a variety of different stores.

My review: Good proportions. Almost ideal width to depth ratio of .625. Bass reflex design gives outstanding bass response for the money. In fact, I had evaluate speakers worth four times as much to find noticeable improvement. My preference is more around a UK style of speaker sound, tighter and deep sounding base rather than a boomy, resonant sound. Not all listeners like this kind of sound, especially younger listeners. Unique flange around tweeter gives great spatial feeling to music. Similar to bi-polar designs, but bi-polars require larger distances from walls which are not appropriate to most dwellings. I found optimium placement to be at least 11" from the side walls and 6" from the rear to eliminate resonant gains produced by surroundings. Speakers really need a high current amplifier with high power output to perform adequately. I was reasonably happy with my home theatre system but were more impressed when I moved to a high current lower watt amplifier. I went from a home threatre receiver of 150 watts to a 60 watt high current amp and found noticable improvements in sound. Since then, I have to a high end pro-amp of 200 watts per channel. I currently use a Bryston 4B with balanced inputs to drive them and they have been reborn. At half volume, I am near concert listening levels with good accuracy. Bass frequencies tend to become slightly distorted at this volume but I do not think it is a result of the electronics. It does however, becomes hard for the ears to differentiate between the frequencies at these higher outputs. I have lost the original manual, so I may be over driving them, but I almost never listen to music at this level anyway.

If using on typical home theatre systems, like Sony, Pioneer, etc. 100-150 watt receivers, then consider purchasing a sub-woofer as well. These type of electronics do not do the speakers justice. They can not supply adequate current to get the most out of the speaker.

Response is amazingly flat. I have measured them in my listening room with 10 frequencies of amplitude calibrated signals and pink noise. My listening room does have some reflections which cause some constructive and destructive interference but it is predominantly in the right channel. I use equalization to reverse this and level balance to minimise distortion.

Analoque recordings come alive and one can appreciate the warmness of yesterdays vinyl from their realistic highs to the deep bass. CD's sound good too although the pure digital ones seem most accurate.

Although I am very happy with my choice, I suggest that you carefully evaluate with a variety of different music to ensure that they are still manufacturing to the same standards.

Take care to break in speakers at lower listening levels for about the first 90 hours. It is well worth the wait.

Excellent value for the money.

Strength:

Great Value (If you don't get sucked in with the sales pitch) Good Overall souding Speaker

Weakness:

Poor Construction, High end to exagerated, Low end to exagrated and slightly muddy.

I have been an audio/acoustical engineer for quite some time part, meaning that most of my job entails listening, and reviewing, and yes I do own a pair of Nuance Speakers. I use then for Pleasure Listening, But they do not have what it takes for Professional Business Use.

When I purchased them I wanted to have some speakers that I could abuse for personal use. Yes as most of you are aware the Nuance sales reps, are clueless and just want you money. Their products are not worth the thousands that they claim them to be worth (I only actually paid $400 can). They are not High end speakers by any means but they do have a personality of their own.

If you are looking for a speaker that will accurately represent a original sound stage and instrumental tonality these speakers are not for you. However if you are looking for a good sounding speaker, that at times exaggerates the sound stage and tonality. These speakers are fine.

These speakers are like many other consumer brands they don’t sound bad but they exaggerate the highs and lows to make the listener feel as if the sound is larger than life. Which they do a adequate job of.

Also many of you people have been cutting each others equipment down saying that this could be the cause of you speakers sounding poor. In actuality the difference (that a Human ear can hear) between high end equipment and mid end gear will only account for 0-10% of Sound quality difference. What you should be more concerned with is you room setup. I find that many monitoring situations can be greatly improved by a little acoustic treatment, and proper speaker setup.

Strength:

They sound unlike anything I've ever heard before!AWESOME!

Weakness:

None that I can think of.

Having spent alot of years in the audio industry,I thought I knew good sound.Lots of speakers sounded good, even great. But they all sounded the same.It has become very stagnant, with very little to differentiate one speaker from another. And then I heard my Spatial3Es.Wow!What an eye opener!Sound in an entirely different way!Instead of the very predictable front stage,I had this incredible 3D sound stage, with sounds coming from all over the place!I had to start listening to all my cds all over again, and while I'll admit that some cds sounded way better than others, they all sounded different. It was like having 150 brand new discs to play. And when used with movies and even just plain television it sounded awesome!I have had many, many people comment on it.But that was then and this is now.And now is so sweet!I used their unheard of trade up option to upgrade my system substantially. After 3 years of doing it in stereo(with an old Kenwood Surround reciever, nothing special),I figured it was time to go digital.I bought a Pioneer VSXD-608 digital reciever and traded my old friends in for a pair of SpatialBabyGrand3E, just under 6 feet of the most impressive thing I have ever heard! Each one has a dual 10 inch,500 watt amp subwoofer built into it and man do those "Babys" pound! And the "spatialsound" imaging?Man I don't know what all you naysayers are doing wrong in your set-up,but mine sound awesome in my living room.Maybe if you spent a little time to measure out your room and find the sweet spot(which all speakers have)you might have ignored all this other crap, and realised what a unique experience they are.2 weeks later I added the center(SpatialGrandCen) and rears(StarSats)and my system is complete(for now;but don't tell my wife that.ha!ha!)Why bother with the huge dollars they want at Silver City when it sounds WAY better at home. As for all that other crap I see in here, what can I say?Lots of people think they know alot about alot, when in reality, they really know very little.Things like specs and magazine reviews mean absolutely nothing to me.Specs can be manipulated and reviewers would probably just trash em for not sounding like everything else.I listened to tons of my own stuff, which the guy here in Winnipeg was more than happy to let me listen to.As for their demo?Seems like a well thought out presentation that shows what the real differences are.And when I asked about Q-sound my sales rep was more than happy to talk about, even admitting that the wood chopping cut(Roger Waters)was a Q disc but that it was just to get my attention. And it did.But when he played some old Zepellin (Whole Lotta Love)and it was coming from all over the place,I was hooked!I think most of these peoples' bad experiences come more from poor salesmen and ignorant know-it-all friends than from anything else.Either that or alot of Futureshop and Visions and A&B Sound salesmen are pretty scared.Just remember that when you have nothing to compete with it,all you can do is trash it.Listen to a few speakers,or listen to a lot of speakers;cheap ones, expensive ones, they all sound the same to me.So what do YOU want?Same old, same old? Or something that blows you away?!I'll take Nuance anyday! There!I've said my piece! P.S.Who cares what they're made of or how it works. It just does and thats good enough for me!

Strength:

Very efficient design, good sounding

Weakness:

efficient design but the spesakers are power hungry, most recievers can't handle long peroids of play without heating up

For everybody out there who is unsure about whether Nuance is a good speaker to buy or not, lets all face it. It's a 50/50 thing. If you listen to them and don't like them, you'll never like them. PERIOD.
By the way if you want a knowledgable sales person go straight to managment or the head of the store. They WILL answer all of your questions. The speakers are paper PAINTED WWITH POLYPERONE making them more efficient, they have a rubber compound surround to better handle dynamics. The magnets are usually 6 oz(there are alot of different designs dso the magnets are different) for the 8 inch wooferes. Internal wiring 14 or 16 guage depending on model.

Q sound? Only 1% of ALL Cd's ever recorded are in q sound. The only q sound recording they DO use is not The Eagles, not the indian dance, but Madonna.

imaging?. Yes they do have a sub turned on(my demonstration never used their Cd's though and I chose what speakers to listen to). You CAN bring your own Cd's in fact they'd like you to. I even brought my own DVD's that I wanted to check out on their system.

The price is negotiable with the sales man. Go straight to managment if yuour seroius, he'll give you the best price with some leeway(like all good managers should)

These speakers are perfect for home theatre because of their design(and you can have the same speaker with built in subwooffers).

Theses speakers are truly AWESOME, and by the way try MUCH DANCE 97, song number 9, with Nuance speakers. The helicopter is very cool.

These speakers are very powerful(enough to make the HOUSE lights go from dimming, to literally blacking out if yu keep them up), they cvan shake the pipes in your roof, or take the door off their hinges(all true its happened to me, course i had a 10" 200 watt Nuance sub hooked up to it, but each of the speakers put out about as much as the sub does)

Listen to the speakers, if you like them, buy them YOU WONT BE DISSAPOINTED

stupid reviewers on here

Hey CanadaGuy,

Have you ever thought about this? The speakers have a grill on them all the way around because that it the look?

They made somethign look different, and now because of that you think they are hiding something?? Did you even listen to the speakers?? I didn't think so...

Odds are I can go to what ever store sells Mission and find you working there can't I?? I thought so.

Heres an idea, all of the people who are competetors against Nuance, stop using this site as a way to make your stuff look better. Maybe then Nuance will get the correct ratings.

Oh and by the way, I do not work for Nuance, if you like I can show you my pay stubs to prove that to you.

Price, Sales Tactics

If you can get a pair of these speakers for under a grand, go for it. Like most people have said here, let your ears decide for you. I like em cause the music I listen to comes through nice and clear. Add to the fact that I took em to a friend's place to compare them against his JBL speakers for sound. Sadly to say, a few cold ones were consumed and my friend turned his amp right up to ten. His blew a microsecond later. Mine rocked hard, distorted a bit, and other than that survived the onslaught beautifully. Haven't yet ever had a problem with them.

I can't think of one

I used to work at a store that carried nuance speakers. Now I work at some crappy financial company. And I will tell you that nuance is not a scam or cheaply made or whatever else people have been saying. Nuance rented a back room from us and did demos of their product. The first time I started to work there I received a demo and from then on I was a believer. What people said about them not letting you use your own music is not true. Many times I've brought my own music from home just so I could see how it would sound in the nuance room. Everytime I was blown away. If you have a chance to get a demo do it. You shouldn't lisen to what others say you should hear it for yourself. If you don't like it then don't buy it, but don't cut yourself short, you might really enjoy it.

Ahem, lets see the construction is good(of the box)

Weakness:

The highs are spit forward, crooked midrange. And the drivers are worth about a dollar.

Ok folks I will not say these THINGS are all bad. They have a
correct construction. And sone models look nice.Yes look but dont sound very very nice.Ha ha.All the Nuance are good is to play some Q sound CD's and make you belive its reinvented
stereo or 3D sound. No folks its Q sound!

The Nuance are as nuanced as a Pro series Vega's or JBL's.
They spit the sound directly in your face and can cause headaches! You can never relax and enjoy the music flow.

The Nuance dont take advantage of anything better than a reciever.Dont waste high $'s on amps and front end. These have auto-damping to ensure owners with cheap(under $1000 recievers)can enjoy the loud screams of the monsters.Ha ha.
Its funny how some LOVE the monsters.Hey its a free country.

To summ all this mumbo-jumbo up these things are worth 2/5 and I am generous here. The only cheaper speaker(High-End poser)are the Joly(make)jokes. These brutus barkers earn a zero.

midrange needs help

I live in Burlington, Vermont, USA. I stumbled upon these when I went looking for a replacement for my old poineer speakers. To keep the story short, I got them for $320 US off the floor -- the local dealer was happy to get rid of them, as it was their last pair, and I was happy to get a rockin pair of speakers to impress folks in my university dorm. So for the price of little bookshelf speakers I got a pair of full-range towers. Of course, I wouldn't pay more than $350 US for them. These are a good choice if you rent an apartment and need a decent pair of speakers you can afford to abuse. On a more positive note, the speakers sound quite good (for a $320/pair), and I've been happy with them for the four years that I have owned them.

Product bashing sites like this one

I can hardly believe the horse**** that i read on this site.
Here you have a great canadian built speaker designed by a respectable engineer, and engineers, and all the sales competition can do is write up all these cheap shot remarks about nuance. If you can honestly tell me that nuance is a terrible souding speaker then why are they selling more speakers than all the others put together. If you think thier overpriced then dont buy them. Go buy another brand that had some of your speaker money line the pockets of all the tweek head magazines out there. Nuance has some of the best imaging ive ever heard in a speaker, and the clarity and crispness of thier music is fantastic. Come on people dont you find it a little funny how badly they get bashed, hey theres alot of pretty lame speakers on the market and you dont see them getting bashed. Clear your mind of all the crap you hear on this site. Go in and have a listen to a pair. Dont listen to the sales rep or anything but the speaker, If you come out of that room totally unimpressed then fine go buy something else. But if you come out with a little tingling down your spine, i think you have just heard what other nuance fans have heard and thats fantastic imaging. If you read in a magazine tomorrow an article written by some speaker guru on how great nuance speakers are all of you would run down and buy them. Because now he says their good and now you can feel all warm and cozy inside about it. Come on, the designer of nuance has been in this business for a long time and he knows what hes doing. Thats why you dont see any reviews in any magazine, they have chosen not to let anyone review them. These guys just say what you want them to and you line their pockets for them. Why not let the customer decide wether he likes them or not, no reviews, no specs, just your ears. After all isnt that what its all about. Oh and by the way i think this site really stinks, hey if you cant sell speakers then leave the cream of the crop alone ( maybe try spraying in box liners for a living or something)Go nuance!!!!!!!!
