Strength:

Fantastic sound for the money.

Weakness:

Non removeable grill.

I don't consider myself an audiophile, but I enjoy listening to music. After auditioning several models, I settled on the Titans above several other models, including some more expensive Paradigms (I thought the Studio 20's sounded better, but not $500 better).

They were a noticable improvement above my previous speakers, the Cambridge Soundworks Ensemble III

Strength:

Unbeatable at that price and probably up to twice the price I've paid for my pair.

Weakness:

Won't work during a power shortage, won't operate properly if used under water, makes you think twice before paying three times more for upgrading to a better set of speakers.

Hummm! I've heard a couple of speakers in my life but I was not expected that kind of sound from those speakers, even though I was expecting a lot because of the reviews I've read in the past three weeks.

My HT plan from the begining was:

1) find a decent amplifier or receiver since it's pretty useless to have speakers without a good amplifier. OTOH, I would be able to use my amplifier with my car's speakers (4 ohms) on my Yamaha receiver since it can handle low impedance speakers. So I went with the 595 from Yamaha. A good choice but I hate the remote control. Right now, I feel I have a little bit too much power available and too many I/O so the 395 could have be a better choice. But, one day, I'll move out of this apartment and - that day - I'll appreciate the power that the 595 can deliver.

2) find a decent set of speakers. I've been surfing on the net a lot lately, mostly to find the best speakers available. Went to a liquidation center and found JBL's HLS620. Didn't buy them at first. Went back to home, came back here and verified what was being said about that model. It looked positive so I went back to that place and bought a pair of JBL. Installed them, put different kind of music. The sound was disappointing. No mid-frequencies. The piano that I like so much from George Winston sounded dim, faded, far away and pumping the volume up didn't help. Well, was it just me or was is that speaker?

3) Next step would be to move the "decent set of speakers" to the rear of my HT and put Legend or Monitor 80 at the front. Now back to 2)

Two days ago, I got a pair of Titan and I've put those as my main on my Yamaha HTR5150 (eq. to 595)... What a surprise!! Not only did they have the mid-freq. lacking in the JBL but the tweeter was also much more effective. The JBL costed me $329 CAN + taxes ($379 in all), weighting 35 lbs each and having two 6.5 inches woofer + a tweeter. The Titan costed me $185 CAN + taxes ($212 CAN with the GST and provincial tax.) weighting a mere 10.5 lbs each!

It's like David against Goliath but David wins! The Titan sound is clear, much much clearer than the JBL costing almost twice its price and with three times its weight!

In fact, they sound so good that I think that I'm going to buy another pair as my main. Just have to buy/build a stand for those Titans. The bass won't shake the house but as I'm in an apartment, I can't even use the Titan at the two third of its capacity without disturbing the neighboor below. So I think I'll be okay with 4 Titan all around. Perhaps adding an HSU VTF2 sub but I think that my friends below might start complaining if I do so.

By the way, don't expect to find the Titan at the price mentionned above. It's because I know the right person. ;)

Indeed, I feel uncomfortable having paid what I've paid for those two Titans. I think I should go back to the store and give my friend more money... And he should send half of that money to Paradigm to make sure they keep creating more incredible speakers!

To be brief, I think it would be right to say that Paradigm is to speakers what Yamaha is to amplifiers. (Try this with a Yamaha: put the volume to the max, put the treble to the max, put your ear next to your tweeter, see if you can hear something. And if you do, make sure it doesn't come from the selected device, i.e. leave that device turned off. Then, try the same with any other amplifier and - well - compare!!)

Have listened to the Lobby Scene of The Matrix today, with my Titan as main and the JBL as rear. Pfffff!! It rocks! The song Spybreak from Propellerheads is used very effectively!!!..... Wow!! ;))) Too bad it's not real columns they are destroying. That would have look much more realistic!

And, overall, remember, there is no spoon. ;)

Strength:

Great sound. Imaging is good. And bass...nice bass. Look great too!!! What a speaker!

Weakness:

none so far...A great speaker!

OH MY GOD!! These speakers were a steal at $210. I heard them once and I didn't even need to listen to the other speakers in the shop. I was sold. From all the hype my friend told me and from what I had listened to at the other store, as soon as I listened to these when I walked in I was sold. The depth and clarity is phenominal. The imaging is great. If you get them pretty close to a wall you get amazing bass response. I don't even need to waste money on a subwoofer. They look great too. I was worried that they would be too small which is why I was in the market for tower speakers. To combat this I also purchased nice wooden stands that fix the size problem. Don't be fooled, these speakers are amazing for their cost. Work perfect as home theater and sound system speakers. Buy these speakers!!!

I found the speakers to one of the best I have auditioned in years. Very clean, warm, depth, and range. Clearly a class within themselves. Wide and deep sound. Dispersion is very wide, imaging is reflective.

Strength:

Excellent Clarity at a reasonable price. Any problems with the bass responce can be fixed by ajusting the bass control to -1 and the treble to +1 on your reciever. Make sure the impedence is set properly on the reciever 5 to 8 ohms is recommended.

Weakness:

Too much bass on some bass heavy rock or techno, speakers must be placed away from walls to avoid even more bass.

The best speakers for the money. I have heard nothing that produces such clear highs a room shaking bass from a bookshelf speaker. Do not place them near the wall, mine are about 4 feet away from the rear wall and about 2 feet away from the sides. This helps produce the best tonal accuracy and limiting the overpowering effects of the bass. Some types of cds (those pressed in the 80's) re david bowie, can have a lack of bass. Since my reciever has a bypass feature, I leave the tonal controls set to reduce bass and on albums from the 80's I bypass the controls. This eliminates almost all distortion.

Strength:

Price, warranty, design, richness of sound for the small size, imaging (with good components)

Weakness:

"S" sounds in vocals a bit harsh, sometimes boomy bass

These dudes are so legendary I just had to try them. I was shocked at the richness of sound for the price. My dealer has a tradeup policy so I figured I could always upgrade if I thought they were crap. A few years later and I still have them. I have upgraded my components and filled the stands (also Paradigm) with sand and these guys sing. A subwoofer helps on two channel music but is not necessary especially if you listen to smaller-scale music. Anyway, I can't say anything else that has not already been said. These are a cult speaker and I got the center and sub to mate.

Strength:

Very good value. Great sound considering their cost.

Weakness:

None.

I've heard alot of speakers that sound better than the Titans but they were alot more money! Considering the cost of these speakers I think they offer exceptional value and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for a good entry level speaker. Give them a test audition at a local dealer and make up your own mind. I have the following:

Marantz SR-7000
Titan fronts
CC-170
Atom surrounds
PW-2200
Sony S550 DVD
Ultralink Interconnects
Tara Labs - Prism Klara speaker cable
