Strength:

excellent speaker for the price- got mine at sears for 275.
very good sub for a moderate home threatre systems

Weakness:

dont turn up that power on the self powered amplifiers it get distorted- just alittle and let your receiver do the rest

excellent power speaker for this price make sure you have a good receiver that doesn't push distortion and this will work perfectly

much better than a JBL 12" JUST IN MY OPINION

Strength:

sweet sound, quality construction and nice looks.

Weakness:

Foam edging instead of polyurothane on woofer, bulky.

I bought this woofer at sears on markdown a few weeks ago and love it. It was marked $150 but since it was a floor model I recieved another 10% off. I have no complaints about its sound or proformance. I use this sub primarily for home theater use and it sounds awesome, and i only have the power setting set at half!. I watched Glatiator with this baby and I was blown away. I have it hooked up to a JVC 7010vbk reciever with Mission floor speakers and JBL center and surrounds. Even at full price which when I went to Sears I was willing to pay, it is a great deal. Buy the way a few days ago I saw that the web site www.Accessories4less.com sells this woofer for $189.00 an dthe 10" for $149!

Strength:

Best Boom For The Buck, Baby! The Acoustic Research brand name and reputation for quality sound. BIG, Bold, Clean, 3D-like Bass. Broadens the depth of the bass channel very well. Hands Down ... this is one sweet mutha-thumper! Even Helen Keller would have given this thumper a Big Thumbs-Up!

Weakness:

Had to resort to a cheap-@ss RCA "Y" splitter for the single RCA Sub-out line that I chose to run over to 'Ole Thumper'. Confusion over the low-end range Hz. Even though it's often listed as being 30Hz on the low end, it will reach as low as 23Hz (from what I can tell) and easily/happily works in the 27Hz range too.

I have hardwood floors, so it quickly became a no-brainer to go with a down/floor-firing style thumper. I was actually zeroing in on the Jensen JS1000 10" subwoof -- until I saw the AR S112PS sitting there ... just waiting for me to give it a listen. Sears had both hooked up and within near proximity to each other, so it was easy to tell [hear] the difference. As of July 1st, Sears marked down all their discontinued items (not just floor models, but new-in-the-box inventory mind you). The regular price of the AR S112PS had been $249, but then dropped from the Sears sale price of $199 to $149 ... over night, literally! And the Jensen initially weighed in at $199 but also was earmarked for discount at just $99 on the same day. ("Come HEAR the softer side of Sears.")

Of course, the wife wanted me to get the $99 Jensen, but to me it was obvious that the AR (at 2" larger) was worth the extra $50. Now I use the thumper to purposely rattle the wife's glass of iced-tea whenever she's in the room watching/listening with me (she uses the thumper as an end table out of spite).

As Elvis would say, "I'm verra happy and verra pleased with this here 'Thumper', uh-huh."

Strength:

None

Weakness:

No weaknesses except the lies on the specs and the fact that it sounds like junk

The ranking for this has creeped up to 4.1 and I just can't stand it. I bought it, and was astonished at how bad it was. When I got rid of it I could sleep peacefully again - I felt like such a sucker with this thing in my living room. Compare to any competent sub out there (Klipch, Velo, HSU, etc...) and you will see for yourself. Ignorance is bliss I guess. You really gotta try a real sub.

For example, try a Velo CT100 (28Hz +-3db) and compare to this AR (20Hz +-3db) and you can't escape that AR is lying right in your face! How can you accept that?

I believe some AR reps are putting exaggerated reviews on here to try and unload these things - and a little balance is in order. One star.

Just finnished watching gone in 60 seconds and the bass was awesome so clean and loud tight & low it tends to rattle every thing off my walls end shelfs my wife is mad at me i cranked the perfect storm and some of her mother's china rattled of the shelfs in the kitchen and broke.
This is the best sub you can get for under $400 to tell you the truth this sub can compare to subs in the $500 to $900 range.

Strength:

Strong cabinet,quality built

Weakness:

Low-pass setting of 80 hz is unacceptable

I had this woofer for many weeks before parting with it.What it does have going for it is that is is a quality built sub with a good frequency response, and for many the 80 hz setting would be low enough on the low pass. For me,i prefer to have a low-pass of 40 or 50 on a sub for i only wish to hear bass from 50hz on down. The 80hz setting makes this sub to directional. If only AR would of provided a LFE direct input that by-passed the crossover, this sub would of been a keeper. Oh well...

Strength:

Tight clean bass, good responce 20-220Hz +/-3dB, plenty of bass to fill any sized room. verry heavy 50Lbs, 3"voice coil verry large magnet maby 7 pounds, good build quality.

Weakness:

none

I've been looking for a sub for around 6 months and when i read the reviews about the sony sa-wm40 i bought it at sears for $350 when i got home and hooked it up and placed it in the corner and poped in U-571 on dvd and took it to the part with the depth charges and the sub could not produce low frequency effects that dolby digital provide.
The specs of the sony say it goes flat down to 20hz but with no +/-3dB marking i soon found out that in a magazine there was a subwoofer review about the sony and it said the real frequency responce for the sub was 39-170Hz +/-3dB so i took the sub back and whent searching for a new sub i went and heard the klipsch ksw-10 at london drugs put it was over $600 and it did not give a clear deep bass so i then whent to the brick ( www.thebrick.com ) and heard the Polk Audio PSW-350 it had cheap volume & crossover controls and when it played deep all you can hear is port noise i was getting fed up then i whent to future shop and heard the jbl powerbass 12 and soon found out the amps have a verry short life ( they will blow up verry easy ) so i said forget it i was giving one more shot for buying a lowcost highpefroming sub then i came upon the Acoustic Research ARS112PS i went to sears and heard it i liked it i bought it for $400 canadian i hooked it up and played the same DVD scene on u-571 with the depth charges and it played impressivly loud and verry deep i felt and hear lots of low end punch it was so good it would not distort or bottom out at high levels due to it's 3" voice coil and large magnet thus giving the sub verry high exscursion . So then i poped in some bass cd's thats have seperate frequency responce tracks ( example, it would play 15Hz for 15 seconds then go on to 16Hz for 15 seconds ) i found out that this sub has kinda clean output at 16Hz it had a verry smooth clean output at 23Hz so on and so on, Then after doing that i played some music cd's like Rock, Rap, ect... and found out that this sub is verry musical, i still had to play more dvd's i looked for armagedon i put it on and i was Blowen Away buy this subs awesome performance it rattled every thing in my house and filled my large living room with plenty of tight clean clear acurate bass ( THUNDEROUS BASS ) I then played " THE PERFECT STORM " and ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh the bass whas so clean and you can relly feel that low end impact .
If your looking for a cheap sub that you can get the best performance buy this you will love like i do .

AWESOME SUB , BEST SUB YOU CAN GET FOR YOUR MONEY.

IF YOU LIVE IN THE STATES YOU CAN BUY THIS SUB FOR
$179 AT WWW.DYNADIRECT.COM THE SPECS AT THAT WEB SITE SAY
IT ONLY GOES DOWN TO 30HZ DON'T BE FOOLED BUY THAT I CALLED THEN AND THEY SAID IT'S A MISSPRINT IT'S ACCTUALY 20HZ+/-3dB
I'M TAKING MY SUB BACK TO SEARS AND BUYING IT AGAIN THROUGH DYNA DIRECT I FOUND THAT IT IS CHEAPER ONLY $315 with tax and border fee and shipping all in canadian dollers
great sub.
