Smooth transition with Monitor 7's Controls Plenty of Power
Weakness:
None found except living in an apartment complex. After years of a no-name sub (100 watts/10 inch) I thought I would finally complete my Paradigm package (Monitor 7's, CC-350,Mini-Monitors, Adp-150, and Titans). I have a Denon 3802 receiver. I was going to buy the Pdr-10, until I auditioned the Ps-1000. I thought the PS had a better transition with the 7's. I also felt that the bass was a lot smoother and deeper than the Pdr-10. Gabriel's new album really shows off this subwoofer. I used the AVIA DVD to set this subwoofer, and have been extremely happy ( I could watch THX test-patterns all day long). I have not really tried to turn it up, or tried any hip-hop like music. But I am sure that when you want it to kick, it will kick. I have been a loyal Paradigm customer for about 6 years. I knew I was going to buy a Paradigm sub. I did not try out any other brands, so I can't speak comparitively with the others. If you are mixing brands, then the only way to judge a combination is to listen to the set-up. But this sub is worth spending the extra $150 over the Pdr-10 Similar Products Used: PDR-10 |

Strength:
Price, sound quality, great craftsmanship, and a great company and if you have fight club you will hear its strengths. I'm very happy with it.
Weakness:
Some may say size but that is not really a problem for me, the only weakness is that I have neighbors. First of all I bought a JBL PB10 thinking this sub would be awesome and it disappointed me so I brought it back. I wanted a more quality sub so I decided on paradigm I already had paradigm speakers so I figured why not match them. My needs where for both music and HT. I originaly was thinking about getting the PDR-12 which is a great sub and a great value that sub would rank 5 in both quality and value, but this sub does not goes as low and it is not as good for HT(well actually it is not even close to as good for HT). I actually did not even listen to the PS1000 that much knowing i was getting quality and I trusted the salesman. Another thing that is great about getting paradigm not online but at a local shop is the fact that you usually can convince the salesman to let you trade up every year so within a year i can get the ps1200 for the difference which is a huge perk. Lets talk sound quality. I heard many people say it is slow or lags a lot, but I found that this is only true if you do not adjust the phase, level, and filter. If you do it is quite fast and it hits the lowest of bass. I listen to some very heavy and fast music with kick bass that is as fast as a machine gun and this sub does not miss a beat. I listened to many different types of music including Ben Harper, Wyclef Jean, Fatboy slim, Eminem, Cake, Slipknot, and even Mozart( not my cd but thought I would try it out, I was not disappointed.) and none of these musicians stumped the sub it performed beautifully, WOW. The sub is very, very efficient this is probably one of the most impressive things about this sub, it really plays well at any volume even at very minimal levels. I have the volume level set at about half and wow I can't even turn this thing up that loud cause I'm worried that the neighbors will think that a tornado is coming or think that a rock concert is going in my apartment. The sub is very nice looking and looks good with my speakers, it is kind of big but not much bigger than my old JBL pb-10. It has a very sturddy box and you can tell quality was paradigm's main concern (along with great sound)when making this sub. The bottom line this sub kicks, it is a great price compared to those overpriced units like velodyne or M&K it actually holds up well against subs priced much higher. The most important thing you must understand is that if you purchase this sub it may sound boomy Similar Products Used: Jbl Pb-10 and Klipsch. None even compared to paradigm. |

Strength:
Excellent styling on the latest version used in this review. Excellent deep bass. Fast pace, without overhang. Tapping the cabinet with a knuckle sounds like marble, indicating solid construction. First rate amplifier performance for this price.
Weakness:
None at this price. I have to say I am delighted with this subwoofer. I have read a few complaints that this sub can sound a little boomy, but as a Designer of Loudspeakers for 27 years, this design is excellent. Firstly, bandpass designs if done corectly can equal or better bass reflex renditions. To prove that try this link written by Dr. Keele, of Keele and Small who have devoted their lives to giving design paramaters to the Industry http://www.toby.com/bpreviews.htm I have to say that when pulled away about 12" from the wall away from a corner the bass is fast and accurate. I have LMS measuring equipmet in my home, and the curve of this modedl and the PDR-12 was identical(+/-.25db). It weighs 20 pounds more than the PDR-12 which is also excellent by the way. Moving the Phase control correctly, and adjusting the x-over level to 55-75hz gave the best results. One human habit is to have the overall level set to high, and therefore ANY subwoofer can produce boom. Spend some time with this classic, adjust the Level control carefully, and break in the suspension for a week or so, and you will be delighted on music as well as HT. A best buy without any reservation. |

Strength:
Accurate, tight & highly flexible. Can be placed very readily in a corner & maintain its accuracy contrary to the owner manual's advice not to place it there. EXCELLENT performance, high value.
Weakness:
BUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. And it's a BIG sub. The buzz calls for an average rating.. the sub is too noisy if you play at low volumes and during quiet music/movie passages. Unacceptable. Excellent sub. I agree on all points that this sub is powerful, tight and can be quite musical. Excellent user controls that allow for an awful lot of tweaking to get this thing to sound just right. Amazing flexibility. Its size is a negative. As is the amplifier hum. And the hum is a HUGE negative. This is not your 60 cycle, ground loop hum. This is NOT a 3-prong plug with ground. This is the amplifier's transistor hum. A buzz - like a toy train transformer hum. Want to hear what I am talking about? Place your ear on the cabinet after the sub comes on, but make sure no music or movie soundtrack playing. You will hear the hum. The problem was, for me, the hum was NOTICEABLY audible in the room during quiet passages in music & movies. I do not go around putting my ear against subwoofers trying to hear humming sounds - I heard the hum & then, found it to be emanating from the sub. All of the accuracy & tightness in the world cannot make up for a noisy sub! It was bad enough that I had to trade it in. I just could not tolerate the hum. Just so you know, the sub buzzed at the dealer's show room, 2 other subs brought to my house buzzed and ALL of the subs on demo in the showroom buzzed. The sales staff were amazed when I had them listen for themselves. Just something to be aware of. If you have very good hearing and can detect very quiet sounds, this sub may not be for you. |

Strength:
Everything, from killer huge looks to house shaking bass. It is also quick and has good timing. Very nice!!!
Weakness:
none I've always wanted a subwoofer, so recently, I decided to buy one. I had a look around, and went for a listen to the Paradigm PS-1000. I went to the demo room, and they had a few subs inside there. I looked at what seemed to be a very large coffee table, until I realised it was the Paradigm PS-1000 sub. Believe me, this one is huge. I took it home, and just about found space to put it in. I connected it up, and started to play one of my favourite dance tracks. "WOW, IT BLEW ME ACROSS THE ROOM". This sub is the most deepest, full, potent, most downright thunderous i've ever heard. My trousers were blowing around from the air coming out of the three large bass ports in the subwoofer. It is amazing, it really is. It is spot on for bass heavy music, like rap, dance and R&B. It is also amazing for DVDs, like Vertical Limit, and Gone in Sixty Seconds. It blows you away, big time. And this review is from listening to it on level 4 out of 10. I dread think what level 10 will be like at the volumes I play it at. Most excellent!!! Similar Products Used: Computer sub, and listened to car subs, but none of them can compare with the bass this Paradigm produces. |

Incredible power, enough to piss off a neighbor.
Weakness:
None One Word.."WOW!" Once as I heard my friends who has the same one I had to go get my own. I took it to school and hooked it up in the dorm room and throughout the year i made a lot of people mad. It would literally rattle the lock box 2 floors down. If you are looking for good responsive power you should buy the PS 1000. Similar Products Used: Sony sub...not shure witch model |

Strength:
Powerful, deep bass. Reasonably priced. If you can find a blem you can save some cash, I got $200 off on mine and I can''t find the blemish.
Weakness:
Not the most musical sub available. First of all, this subwoofer looks impressive. It''s huge and it''s heavy, so if you''re concerned about size, this might not be the sub for you. It''s twice the size of my friend''s 8" Energy and about three times the size of another friend''s 8" Cambridge SoundWorks BassCube. The bandpass design this sub employs is really good for getting to the lower frequencies, but there are tighter subs out there. I''ve found it great for HT. It pumps out massive amounts of bass, and while I realize there are many more powerful subs out there, I can''t see any reason why you would need more than what this sub is capable of. Musically, it''s good for natural music or rap/dance, but when I listen to punk or anything really fast it has a hard time keeping up. My home theatre room is in my basement, and when I turn up Sorry Miss Jackson by Outkast and go outside for a smoke, you can hear the siding on the outside of my house shaking. Sweet. On the other hand, because of the bandpass design, it''s hard to tell if you''re pushing the sub too hard |

Strength:
Good with music and movies, good at a variety of volumes, blends very well with other brands of speakers.
Weakness:
No real weaknesses, but my wife does not like its large size. I have never owned a subwoofer, and since I had some b-day money I decided to add one to my system. After doing research here at audioreview.com, I decided that my choice was the PS1000. I called around to a variety of Paradigm dealers on the central coast and southern CA and learned that everyone sold this SW for $519.00. This a little out of my price range, and fortunately I found one on eBay that was only a few months old for $310.00. I purchased this SW for listening to music, and for watching DVDs. I found that for both, this SW is great. Here are my observations. First, it is larger than I had envisioned. My wife is not all that pleased with this new “coffee table” and wanted to put a plant on it. I don’t think so. I have it placed next to my TV, which is between my two main speakers. The setup for it was relatively easy. I followed the instructions and have achieved very good performance. The manual states that the Sub./Sat. Phase Alignment control is subtle and dependent on room acoustics and my other components. Well, the control is so subtle that I was unable notice a difference in the settings. And it is not just me; my wife cannot tell a difference either (she was my assistant after the “plant” battle). The other two settings, Subwoofer Cut-Off Frequency and Subwoofer Level make a huge difference. Once all the settings were made, this blended extremely well with my current Frankenstein system. I have a Denon AVR-2801 AV Surround Receiver, two Infinity RS-6000 main speakers (circa 1989), and two Polk Audio R10s (1999) for surround. Believe it or not, these speakers sound like they were made for one another. The Denon allows me to cut off some of the low frequencies to the main speakers and have them only going to the SW. I think this helps. I tested the SW at a variety of levels. It sounds equally good at low/medium & medium/loud volumes. I was a little surprised at how well it did in the low volume range. It really helped to fill out the sound without overpowering the mains. This is really important to me since I listen to my music in this low/medium level most of the time. I had read some reviews here about the SW being too boomy. I found this to be true prior to my adjusting it for my room. Once I made the adjustments, it lost its boomyness. Final and misc. thoughts: The auto on/off feature is really nice. It automatically tu Similar Products Used: None, it is my first subwoofer. |
