Strength:

Flexability, Sound Quality and Build.

Weakness:

It's Quite Big.

Richer Sounds in the UK are selling these off discounted for £200 which makes this extremely good value. I have set up a Home Recording Studio and use it to provide low bass that can the be switched off to check that the mix will sound ok in different environments. At the moment my midi gear is routed digitally to a Lexicon Studio system and then on to a Yamaha Digital Amplifier again via a digital link so that only one 24 bit D/A conversion is taking place. The sub is fed via the pre-outputs rather than the specific sub output because it sounds better. It requires careful setting up. I found it comes on song in the corner of a room with the ports firing inward. A previous reviewer found this as well but it is probably dependant on individual rooms. The sound Quality is extremely good coming from this very high quality source. I have owned high end gear previously and this beer budget sub delivers very good bass when positioned and set up properly. I tried for comparison feeding it a poorer quality signal via a commercial soundcards mini jack output and it sounded boomy in comparison to the clean path. It suits better quality equipment. Get some quality gear with good small speakers and buy this for the bass at no sonic cost. A brilliant buy and for the money absolutely ridiculous.

It is impossible to find a sub that plays as well as the Paradigm doesfor $500. I've done a ton of listening to subwoofers. It goes low (25hz)
it plays loud, and it is also reasonably fast. The best part is that,
unlike all other subwoofers around it's price, it provides an amount
of visceral impact that is unheard of at the price. Playing CD's like
"Planet Drum" and Telarc's "The Great Fantasy Adventure Album" (which
have all kinds of earth shaking bass from hell) through this subwoofer
is an absoloute blast. It also has enough subtlety for music. Don't get
me wrong, if you want the best, by all means, buy Linn's $4000 Isbaric
subwoofer because it can't be touched! But for people like me who have
got to have that low end, but are not made out of money, this thing
is truly spectacular. Highly recommended!

Strength:

Incredible Siound, makes the walls and everything around gets blown away

Weakness:

Cost, for me, i didn't thought Subs would be more than 200$ CND but it didn't cost me not as much as the other brand. The adjustement of cutoff frequency and volume are in the back...

I bought a sub for my home theater... I bought the system at Xmas and realized that i had to pump the system too high to get the ambiance i wanted (even though my receiver as a lot of bass already!) So i went into the same brand as my other 5 speaker (who each received some sort of prize...) and wasn't disapointed. My only complaint lies in the fact that the cutoff is in the back so you have to go all the way back too "play" with it... The volume isn't a big thing cause i just crank it almost to the top and adjust it from my receiver...

Strength:

lots of power, excellent for HT

Weakness:

dead spots, slight boominess

I had a PDR-12 that because of a great return policy I was able to trade in after 2 months and pay the difference for the PS-1000. While I liked the PDR-12, I tend to listen to music loud and it sounded to me like it would distort at the volume I was listening. There was also a dead spot in the middle of my room. After returning it and living with the PS-1000 for going on a year I've realized a couple of things. It takes a lot of time to set these subs up properly (room placement, crossover freq, etc). At least to my ears the PDR-12 wasn't near as fast as the PS-1000...if you're using it for music you definitely have to cut back on the volume (mine is at a little under 1/4) but it seems to be fast and in perfect proportion to the levels from my Atoms. Just my two cents, but I'd definitely recommend this sub for someone looking to spend a modest amount of money and get a lot in return. I'm a college student so money _is_ a concern for me...

for those wondering, my equipment is as follows:
H/K AVR-300 Receiver
Sony CDP-CX450 CD changer
Sony DVP-S360 DVD
H/K CDR-2
Monster Interlink 100 digital cables
Interlink 201 Sub Cable
Paradigm Atoms on stands (replacing these soon)

Strength:

Powerful, deep and loud.

Weakness:

Finding a place to put this monster.

Works great for my home theatre and music (hard house and techno. No problems with hissing or transformer humm. So for this machine is all bang for your buck. Checked out the PDR line but it lacked the power.

I was going to post a very positive review of this subwoofer a few weeks ago, but since that time I have removed it from my system. I recently upgraded my digital front end (to a Sony CDP-XA50ES) and amplifier (to an Accuphase E-406V), and did an A-B comparison with the subwoofer in and out of the system. I was shocked to find that the active crossover of the PS-1000 was adding a "harsh" sound to the upper midrange. Has anyone else noticed this problem? Admittedly, it could be that the improvement I heard was due to the elimination of two sets of interconnects -- but I was using a total of 2 meters of Kimber KC-1 (1 meter each way). The CD player and amp are connected with 0.5 meter of the same cable. My speakers are Eminent Technology LFT-VIIIA's wired with shotgunned Kimber 8-TC. I liked the sound of the bass from this subwoofer, but I cannot tolerate the harshness added to the midrange. Actually, this situation has rather damped my enthusiasm for upgrading to a more expensive Paradigm subwoofer. I wonder whether getting one of Paradigm's external crossovers might help -- they seem to be quite reasonably priced.

I recently bought the PS-1000 floor demo at my local retailer, for $375 still with 3 year waranty, yipee. So far I'm very happy with it. I'm still not certain of the ideal set-up though, it has proven to be quite a pain, to get consistent good bass (not the products fault). I have it coupled with a Yamaha RX-V992 and Monitor 5's. I'm wondering if it is normal to always adjust the bass between movies and music and whatnot, to get the right blend or should I just leave it. If anyone has set-up and test advice as to get the optimum set-up please tell me.

Strength:

Very powerful,deep extension,hit's hard (movies),beautiful cabinet,bang for the buck

Weakness:

strictly a hometheater sub,not too impressive on music

I must say that this 10 inch woofer can move alot more air than most 10 incher's.This sub dig's pretty deep also(20Hz in my room). This sub also hit's with authority.I tried out the def-tech pf15tl+ in my home, and in movies the ps1000,hit harder, and deeper(try the scene in THE HAUNTING when the ghost throw's Nell out of the bed,I think it's scene 16 and listen to the def-tech flabber, fart, and distort, while the paradigm pump's out ultra low frequencies with ease),then tell me wich sub performs better.I dont even think the def-tech goes down to 20Hz to be honest. This sub is a steal for only $500.This review was for movie bass only, the def-tech is better for music, serving me no purpose because I dont use a sub with two-channel music anyway. The ps1000 is a great dedicated hometheater sub.

Strength:

Produces profound earthquakes in the Dorm, Rich Deep filling bass. Runs Efficiently, i.e. you dont have to shove that much power down its throat to get loud, (its loud by nature)

Weakness:

the hot girls next door don't like me anymore because of loud noises :(

These compliment my Bose 301's perfectly. Watching movies will never be the same without a sub. Explosions are the best. I've wanted a sub for my system for a long time, and I'm glad I waited and bought the right one the first time.... (NO BUYERS REMORSE HERE)... People say this sub isn't suited for music, but more for home theater...As for me and my diverse music tastes, I would have to say my rap cd's bring out the best in this subs capabilities. Deep and constant basslines For 10" sub is a beast, and goes to show just how important the design, and power source/amp can make a difference. While comparing subs in the soundroom, the paradigm put other more expensive subs that were bigger to shame. I doubt I will outgrow this one, but if I ever feel the need, I'll just upgrade to the PS1200, for the price in difference, and thats the beauty of buying at HiFi. For me, this sub was the highest quaility, best sounding, and best overall value on the market that I could get my hands on.
