Strength:

Awesome for home theater, Best bang for your buck, goes deep & loud

Weakness:

drops off around 30Hz

For all you people who wish this sub would sound great for music.
I found a way for it to sound great for music.
This is what you do.
Firts take the woofer out & stuff the cabinet full with polyfill then mount the woofer back on.
After that plug up the rear port of the sub.
It will make the bass more tight play cleaner & fast.

Strength:

Great buy for the price. It sounds just fine for music to me. Looks nice. Small enough to put in small places.

Weakness:

For the price, there are no weaknesses.

Unless you've got lots of money to blow or can find a great deal on a more expensive sub, there's no reason to look past this. Sure, there are tons of better subs, but not for the price.

I was looking at the Sony, JBL PB12, and Cerwin Vega LW12 subs.

My next choice was the JBL from an online retailer for $100 more. I decided to go with the Sony for two reasons: much easier to claim warranty than any online retailer, and it was cheaper. If Best Buy would have had the JBL for $100 more, I would have gotten that one.

I love all kinds of music, and I never have the bass/crossover past halfway. There is absolutely no need to (unless you want to bug your neighbors). Thus, I believe I can say the extra money for more expensive speakers is probably not worth it.

I haven't noticed any lack of defintion yet when listening to music. Sound great!

Strength:

Don't know yet... can't get this sucker to go! Help!!!

Weakness:

No sound... yet!

Well, my first forray into the world of DD/DTS and things have been - uh, unclear. Maybe someone here can help me out. I just bought a Pioneer VSXD-510, a DV-333 DVD Player and a Sony SAWM40 and hooked it up to my very smooth sounding Advent Prodigy II speakers... and it sounds awesome... to a point... no bass!

Although the sound coming from the four mains and the center sound great - there's NOTHING coming out of my Sony SA-WM40... whaaa! I'm severly lacking bottom end! Bought on the reviews read here, I'm dying to get this puppy to work!

The power is definitely on, the receiver is set properly and I've gone over the connections a zillion times. It all looks good, except I might be a bit unsure about the type of cable I need to be using to hook it up (from the sub preout on the deck, to the line in on the sub itself). I get a constant humm with one that I have, and another I tried produces nothing. Is there a special cable I need to hook up to this thing (I'm assuming you just use a standard RCA type cable)? And what about the speaker wire in/out connections at the back of the sub? - I gather they are for Pro-logic systems, and not DD. Is this right? Only one cable (not including the power cord) hooks into the sub?

I have no manual of course (ebay isn't always the best for that), and nobody in this tiny town of ours seems to barely have a clue what Dolby Digital is, let alone how to fix my problem. I've even done the mods listed here (uh yeah - before I even knew the sub was working, ooops) hoping to get the most bang for the buck... but so far... I got nada! Arrrgh!

Anyone out there willing to help a poor, bass deprived soul... any clues?

I give the Sony only one star for satisfaction so far... once I get the thing... um, "working" I'll post a real review, which I'm hoping will be most positive!

12" cone and Auto ON/OFF

Weakness:

isn´t as good as reviewd on this site. Lack of stable bass when listening music.

I read all the reviews here and thought this must be an excellent sub. Well it was very good sub for it´s price, but not really as glory as you may think reading what people have said about it.
Sony works suprisingly good when using it with home theather, but what comes to the music performance it is fairly average sub.
I bought my sony last week and took it back today. I now have Audio Pro B1.35 which is absolutely brilliant. I´m not sure whether you have it in U.S because I haven´t found any reviews of it.

When i took all 3 subs home ( YES I DID ) and compared them side by side you could not tell the difference between the Sony and JBL, the CV was LOUD but to boomy for music and DVDs. the JBL was not worth the extra $200.

Jacek, DD LFE range is 20Hz-120Hz, if you set the cut-off to 50Hz you'll be missing about 80Hz-120Hz.

Boomy sound is not always because of your subwoofer, your room may have a lot to do with it. Since I use gypsum (sound proof board) on my room walls, I can set the cut-off freq. up to maximum, no boomy at all.

Strength:

Cheap

Weakness:

Hmmm....

Could anyone out there write an in depth review on how to modify this thing? I can't decide if I should add foam, get a new driver, or just get a new sub. The price, amp, and cabinet are great, but the Sony woofer falls way under par.

First I was satisfied with its deep bass, DD5.1 demo proves that it rocked my room. I was getting more dissapointed to learned that many DVDs I've seen not many DVDs give deep bass. I thought that nothing wrong with my SA-WM40, the DVDs just didn't give sub sonic sound. Then I saw ESP article about Subwoofer Controller with its Extended Low Frequency principle (www.sound.au.com), I built it and then I had another problem....The subsonic sound was very strong so I had to get rid all stuff in my room that were trembling (I had to tighten my cupboard door, and many other stuffs). I was very satisfied, thanks to Rod.

In "The Mummy", when the airplane was attacked by the desert strom I never could get enough deep bass, but with the Subwoofer Controller, my room's shaken.

If you are interested in using the subwoofer controller, BEWARE going below 20Hz might damage your woofer. I never set the volume above 50%, 25% is too much for my 3x3m room. If you like to watch movie with heartattacking sound, this stuff is good, real good. I guess it's not good for music, but which sub is good? Getting flat response of an active sub with separate stereo speakers, how do we set that?

Strength:

For a nominal price, gets you in the door for home theater

Weakness:

Doesn't seem the greatest for music, but will do till you find one that will.

I've been holding off on a sub for a year knowing that I'd purchase one eventually. After reading the reviews at this site and hearing about this sub from a friend. I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did, because it fills in the bottom for my H/T quite nicely. although I will agree that it lacks some for music, but even some major hi end subs from B&W, Velodine even come up short. I do intend to buy a sub that blows me away both for H/T and music, but untill I can raise the cash this little sub will do fine. I have it set low that it doesn't kick in till there is some bite, then it shakes the floor pretty good. Some reviewers have stated that this sub booms in their set ups, but I have found that room acustics have a big influence on your system. I have rpg profoam acoustic panels from audio advisors, a catalog store. Improved my whole system as far as imaging, echo reduction, and depth. all in all very pleased with my purchase. Can't go wrong for 150 dollars.
