Just picked up this sub 2 days ago at Circuit City. I got it for $429+tax. It's well worth the $$. I'm driving this sub with a Yamaha RX-V995 and have matched the sub with the Klipsch Quintets. Feel free to email me with any questions.

Strength:

Tight plentiful bass, with little boominess.

Weakness:

slight thump from amp when in auto shutoff mode, slight buzz when no sound is playing. (Both extremely minor, I'm just very detail oriented)

Can't complain much about this sub. I have a 24x16x10 room and this sub fills it very well at half volume. The power is there, the bass is very tight and musical, as well as being terriffic in HT. I hate boomy subs, and the Paradigm's definetly qualify as boomy. Personally I think they are garbage for music, probably would be a good HT sub however. I thought the B&W sub (not sure the model number, had a front firing 10") was a good performer in my room, but not as good as the CT-100, not to mention it was a bit pricey. The Klipsch sub needs some improvement as well, not much on down-firing subs, for the same boominess issue.
I like the velodyne's flexibility with crossover points, as well as being able to bypass them. The phase switch works well also. I chose the 10" over the 12" because to me it sounded much more musical.
My current setup consists of the following:

Onkyo DS-656 receiver
Kenwood DP4440 CD player (next to be replaced, probably with a Rotel unit)
Paradigm Mini-monitor (4 of them, 2 fronts, 2 rears)
Paradigm CC-350 center channel.

The sub blends flawlessly with my paradigm's, and the overall sound is great. If you are considering this sub, I wouldn't think twice about it. Good power, tight bass, and a great value at under $500.

Strength:

Well built, Reasonably priced, Just great bass w/o being boomy.

Weakness:

Packaging .

There are subwoofers pretending to be like one and there is a subwoofer that needs to be heard to be appreciated. That one happens to be the Velo CT-100. Do you really want to spend your hard earned money on a subwoofer? Don't think twice, and go get yourself this nasty sub. It's just incredible, for the money it's the best! It makes other subwoofer feels anemic when it comes to it's main purpose. You'll find a bit better sub than this, but the question is do you really have to spend that much to appreciate the low frequency of your system? I think not. I decided to go with the CT 100 since for me it's just right as far as price and wattage is concerned. Great for movies and music. Highly recommended......

Strength:

very clean, tight bass; great value relative to competition

Weakness:

packaging

This sub is amazing! I'am using it with two B&W 602s and its a perfect match. Both movies and music sound great and the sub definatly adds a HUGE dimension that was missing in the past. My only complaint is that the packaging is flimsy and there isn't a lot of protection for the speaker. The reviews on this site definatly helped because the clerk at Circuit City didn't know much. For the price, there is nothing that even comes close!!

Strength:

Velodyne quality for cheap. Very nice with music and HT. Plenty of power (vol at "2")

Weakness:

None

I hope I can slip this review in since it's been a while.

That is my review below - and it's obviously a mistake. I was trying to post my review of the AR sub - but was under the wrong product.

I replaced the AR with the Velodyne CT-100, and was so happy with the Velo that I lost my head and posted in the wrong spot.

Please don't e-mail me to tell me the one below is a mistake - I have asked this site to delete it three times, and they won't answer.

I know this "5" can't make up for the rating below - too bad about that, because this sub deserves all the good ratings. It is EXTREME value for $400.

By the way, I originally got an open box for $339, but decided to swap it for a new one because there has been an upgrade (added 50 watts), and so I could preserve my right to trade up to CT-120 if I ever need to. I doubt I will - this sub just ROCKS.

Strength:

Smooth low (LOW) bass, variable crossover, line level in, out, speaker in, out. crossover "out" button.

Weakness:

In this price range (<$500) none, whatsoever...

I basically listened to all subwoofers in the $500 and less range. I also have listened to the Velodyne HGS 18 ($3000), Meridian, Wilson Audio... so I know what the top end subs sound like.

I also have a very big listening environment (>8000 cubic feet). This sub can fill up this room. The sub is very smooth and very low. The variable cross-over works great so that you can add as much mid or high bass as you want. At the lowest setting (about 40Hz), your music better have low notes or the sub sits quiet. Organ music, kettle drums, loud sound effects (car doors slamming, truck engines), have powerful and sustained low energy. I admit that for my room the 150W amp needs to be turned up past the 50% mark to shake the room but the distortion is very low for such a low cost speaker. The Boston or Klipsh would rattle at the low notes and sounded like the speaker literally was hitting the housing of the speaker case. In my mind, there is no other low cost sub worth listening to. This sub has the qualities of Velodyne's top end and is a very good design. Do yourself a favor and listen to this speaker before buying another sub. In the show room, make sure you get to adjust the crossover yourself as well as the volume control. Play something will a lot of LOW information and turn it up loud. Try the same with the other subs and you'll be sold. Show rooms have a tendency to turn up the volume on the speakers they want to sell and try to emphasize the high and mid bass to show you how powerful the speaker is. This is a dumb trick and will not show you the true abilities of a sub capable of going low.

Strength:

Strong, smooth bass, build quality

Weakness:

none thus far

Initially, I thought that I'd be able to buy a decent sub for around $250 - $300 (I wanted to buy locally). However, after listening to the few available in that price range, I knew that I would not be satisfied with any sub in that price range.

Although I don't have any experience with SW's, I did audition almost all the subs in this price range and size (JBL, Boston Acoustics, Klipsch, Mirage, Yamaha, DCM, Sony, Infinity, Polk and others I don't remember). In the end, I was trying to decide between the Velo CT-100 and the Boston Acoustics AV600. In terms of sound, the Velo was easily the winner, but because of the seemingly compact size, and beautiful finish of the BA sub I was having trouble deciding.

I went with the Velo because I was so impressed with its ability to do an excellent job with both movies and music. Also, the positive experience of other Reviewers here helped.

Unless the sub breaks down, I can't see changing my mind about the quality and performance of this unit. More than enough power (the volume control is set slighly above the 25% point). The controls have a feel of quality. The enclosure is a bit generic in apperance, but it is solid and well built.

I would recommend this sub to anyone seeking above average sound and quality, but not interested in spending a fortune.

My modest system includes:

Denon 1801
Sony 360 DVD
Infinity RS5000's
Infinity Entra Center
Velodyne CT-100
Sony SSMB 105 surrounds

Strength:

Good price/performance ratio; tight, non-boomy bass

Weakness:

None

This is one of the best sounding powered subs for under $450 i've heard to date. I like the phase switch and the variable built in crossover point, and the build quality is classic Velodyne. The bass on this unit is reproduced with authority, and does not sound boomy like many other subs in this price range. In short, worth at least an audition if you are looking for a good sub for cheap. One of the best values in audio out there.

Strength:

Lots of bass. Good HT sub.

Weakness:

Not good with music.

This sub pumps out a lot of bass, but at the cost of articulation and quality of sound. I bought the M&K V-75 and did a side by side comparison with the CT-100 playing various music at different listening levels. The V-75 came out on top, way top. The V-75 is amazing. The bass was tight, articulate, and blended wonderfully with my RT55 at all levels. If you are looking for a musical sub, DON'T buy the CT-100, it's definately a home theater sub. Buy the
V-75, which I paid $465 for.

Strength:

Deep Bass with little distortion. Excellent for HT and pretty good with music.

Weakness:

Sounds so so with music, but not too sure if all subs are like that.

Excellent sub for the price. Very deep bass with little distortion.
