Strength:

Pounds strong bass without needing to raise volume on reciever much, clean lows..

Weakness:

Manual lacks detailed information

I would say now that the new series of VELO's are out, you should be able to get a great deal on this older model if you could find one. It's a steal at the regular retail price. I was a bit hesitant about getting a 10 inch woofer to use with my dual woofer towers that go kind of low already, so let me tell you it was very much worth it. This unit pounds hard !!!...That's all I need to say (throw in the first 10 minutes of toy story 2 and you'll know what I'm talking about).

Strength:

great sound, complements mains without overpowering them

Weakness:

price

The whole system (Infinity RS5's, CC3, RS3's) now sounds great with the addition of the Velodyne. And the CT100 doesn't oerpower them. But sub-woofers are relatively simple devices. Why do they have to cost so much? ($429 at Circuit City)

Strength:

Clean -Great Bass output

I had read the reviews that everybody has given and it seemed that this was the one. I considered a JBL but when I listened to them and rembered the reviews - it's not worth the money. I have a Yamaha rx-v595 with Infinity sm122's, sm185's and sm center speaker. With the Velodyne, it sounds perfect. The tank sceen in Saving Private Ryan shook the walls. The Beatles sound great and Metallica rocks. By the way, abcstereo.com has it for $349, so I went to Circuit City, told them and they matched the price, plus I can upgrade any time in the next year. Overall - Great Sub.

This review is to correct an earlier review on this brand and model. It turns out there are two versions. My first review was on the older model which is lower powered, but better behaved. The second model "rings" (oscillates) at low frequencies if presented with a transient input near its low frequency peak. Looks like the bass boost circuit used to extend the bass range downward has too much gain and too narrow a peak to be stable, so it oscillates if pushed. May be OK for HT, but it's death on music. The earlier model is actually pretty good on music. I think this may be the result of trying to make the sub better for "effects" on HT.

Strength:

Deep, clean, tight base. Excellent contruction and controls. Great for both HT and music!

Weakness:

None

I just purchased the new 2001 model CHT10. The CHT (classic home theatre) models are replacing the CT series sub's. The CHT sub have all the great features of the CT but add additional capabilities for HT. Check out the website for the details. I actually used the Paradigm PDR10 for about a week and was quit pleased with its performance. However, for an additional $50 (I paid $300 for it) I returned it as I was blown away by the CHT10. It not only matches the PDR10 in depth and tonal values (deep tight bass), but exceeds it in power (150 to 110 watts RMS). The real difference is in HT. The CHT10 far exceeded the PDR10 in brut power, shaking and vibrating everything in my house; however, still maintaining a deep tight bass. The CHT10 from a power and sound perspective is very similar to the Paradigm PS1000. The difference is price and size; the PS1000 runs about $75 more and from a price to performance ratio the CHT10 is a better value and comes from the best sub manufacturer in the business. The PS1000 is also huge! I highly recommend this product! For the money and even a couple of hundred more, it is the best sub you can buy and is put together very well!

Strength:

Great response to lows (Not boomy at all)
Relatively small enclosure (For a 10")

Weakness:

None so far...

I bought this sub less than a week ago. I was almost duped into buying the AR 15" sub... I read some reviews on this site and decided against it. The sound of the CT100 is outstanding. I was hesitant at first because this Velo dosen't have the active servo, but it really does the job. If you can pick this sub up for around $375.00 you will be really happy.

It added some much needed umff to my system that consisted of a pair of Polk RT10's.

Strength:

Solid build, goes very deep, musical (I'm not into HT) has an LFE input, necessary for use with an electronic crossover

Weakness:

none found so far

I have this set up with a Paradigm X-30 electronic crossover at the preamp output. Gives a true active biamp setup and puts the sub controls at my listening position.
I am using an 80 Hz high pass and the low pass is at about 65 Hz to get the best blend.

The sub is very musical and plucked or bowed acoustic bass goes down the scale smoothly to the lowest notes (around 41 Hz) with no anomalies. But the sub goes much lower than that and a symphonic bass drum twack is just amazing in its power. There seems to be very little distortion to give false bass clues.

I am using it with a pair of B&W 602 series 2 main speakers and the overall system is just awesome. I consider it to be a very good performer and an excellent value.

Strength:

Great frequency response, clean tight bass to be reckoned with.

Weakness:

It's not an SVS subwoofer

I strolled into CC with a bag full of CDs and DVDS and my SPL meter in hand planning to get the Polk PSW350 or the Velodyne. Luckily, I knew the salesguy so he gave me no hassles and let me set up the room similar to mine (Onkyo 494 reciever and similar speaker setup). I calibrated the fronts, centers, and surrounds to 75 db with my trusty SPL meter, and the sub to an average of 79db and went to work. First I demoed 4 movies with great bass (Titan:AE, U-571, Event Horizon, and SPR) and the Velodyne won the first round. I was pretty happy with the extension on both subs, but the Velodyne's bass was somewhat cleaner and tighter. Being satisfied with my findings, I moved on to music. I tried two DTS dvds first (Peter Frampton: Live in Detroit and Eagles: HFO) and multiple regular CDs from varying genres of music (Crystal Method, Metallica, Bach: Little Fugue, Led Zeppelin, Bjork, Ella Fitzgerald, and others). I can't remember one CD that didn't sound better coming from the Velodyne. I had one more trick up my sleeve to convince me that the Velodyne was worth the extra money. I pulled out a CD that was my ultimate test in bass from music: DJ Magic Mike's "Feel the Bass 3". Needless to say the Velodyne won by a significant margin. After my 3 hours of testing, I was given a nice surprise: they had an open box CT-100 for less than the Polk cost. So I picked it up, added a copy of Point Break in DTS and took my new baby home. Great sub.
