Strength:

Clean, crisp and powerful bass without any distortion.

Weakness:

None that I can tell.

This is the one that gives you that clean, yet crisp and powerful bass you've been searching for. I went to Circuit City and Sound Advice in Tampa, FL to compare several subwoofers. Let me tell you, for the money ($429.00), I could not find a better buy and a better sounding subwoofer. Yes, there are more powerful and definitely more expensive subwoofers out there. But for the home audio enthusiasts like myself, this one gave me the most for my money. Do yourself a favor, don't let pressure salesmen get the best of you. Get out there and compare the CT-100 against the competition. You'll like this one.
Saving Private Ryan and old ones like Speed and Independence Day never sounded better. A great buy......

Strength:

Powerful bass, features, BASS!!! Oh, did I mention Bass

Weakness:

none.

This is my first powered sub. I have a passive Infinity sub that runs with my Infinitesimal (sp?) satellites, but I had no idea what I was missing. I am glad that I found this site as it has greatly helped in my buying decisions of late and have yet to be disappointed. Since I currently have a complete Infinity speaker system (aforementioned sub/satellites, IL25C center, and QPS-1 surrounds) I was leaning heavily towards an Infinity sub. However, the glowing remarks for this sub swayed me to Velodyne and boy am I glad. At Circuit City I listened to the Polk PSW350, Infinity IL100s, and the CT100. While all of them performed their task well, even my untrained non-audiophile ear could tell the difference. I had the sales rep randomly mix the 3 different subs into the music with my eyes closed and I could pick the CT100 out every time. The Velodyne just envelopes the room with Bass seamlessly, it isn't directional at all. With the Polk and Infinity subs I could always tell where they were in the listening room. It has taken my 7 year old Infinity sub/satellites and re-energized them, with the added low's the whole system just sounds incredible.

As a side note, I was in the dog house for this purchase. The day it showed up all I heard was "What are you trying to do? blow the roof off....". Once I hooked it up and adjusted it, all I heard was "Wow!!!".

Strength:

Tight bass and plenty of it

Weakness:

None

Used with Thiel 3.5 speakers in deadish 15'x15' room.
Bought this when I went Home Theatrical with my system and I wish I'd done it earlier. More than enough bass for movies, let alone music. The improvement it has wrought in the Thiels is spectacular. Their one weakness was in the deep bass--the design exchanged level for extension (they can do 30hz but not effectively) and the Velo provides more of the latter and tons of the former, while staunchly maintaining personal invisibility (crossed over according to THX specs). The only time it showed its face was when I tried it in a corner, at which time the bass became thuddy and thumpy and clearly localized. It now sits against a wall well away from corners, making the 3.5s sound like 7s. The Thiels' mids are cleaner and more transparent with the Velo--whether this is because the Velo takes so much pressure off the Thiels' low bass or because it's enabled me to get rid of their bass-boost box, I don't know or care.

I reviewed this once before in July but never was put anywhere. So I'll do a review again because this is a very new product. I bought it in July when it first hit the market. I think this is one of the best subs I've seen to date. This sub is very fast, to keep up with music and blends seemlessly with my Infinity 2000.4s. I judged loudness with my test cd. I set the CD player to play a 30 Hz tone and boy did it. This sub was the loudest sub at Circuit City in the 30 Hz region. I should say when not compared to another Velodyne sub. I did direct comparisons with the Polk SW150, 10" Carver sub ( can't remember model ) Infinity BU2, and the very bad, JBL 1200. Well the Velodyne blew all of them away. The Polk was the Second best because of loudness and distortion. The Carver couldn't keep up dynamically, the Infinity didn't go low enough or loud enough without port noise and was a tad boomier, although it had a great punch. The JBL is best suited for cheapo mini-systems. Stereo Review did a test on the big brother, CT-120, and gave it a great review with less distortion and louder output than the VA-1012X which costs more. The nice thing for me is when I bought it, it was on a promotional sale for only $300, now it has gone up to $430. This is still a killer price for such performance. Another thing is this sub offers features that subs at $1000 and over don't. It has a subwoofer lowpass crossover bypass. This eliminates the interference you have when your using your receivers sub out which has it's own lowpass crossover which then is added to the subs lowpass crossover. This can give you early rolloff of some frequencies. It even has highpass crossovers to keep those harmful low frequency signals out of your main speakers. It has " 2 " ! One coming from the speaker level outputs when used with the speaker level inputs. The other is from the line level outputs when used with the line level inputs. Both highpass crossovers are set at 85 Hz which is a good frequency. Of course you have the polarity switch, subwoofer level control, and variable lowpass frequency control from 40 Hz - 125 Hz. Like I said, this is the best subwoofer you can find for the sound and money, especially if you can get for $300 like I did.

I would have to agree with Tom that the Velodyne CT100 is an outstanding subwoofer for the money. If you followed some of my reviews of speakers, you would know that I own the B&W CDM1s. I bought the Velodyne subwoofer because I had worked at Circuit City and departuring because I need to go to school here in the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The CDM1s, like what I wrote in my review, when placed correctly, offer extremely transparent and palpable sound. However, I had to move into a bigger room with one of my brothers. In a bigger room, the B&W lose some of the bass extension and output. I also like playing my music loud; the addition of the subwoofer would save my speaks, so to speak. So when I knew that I was leaving, I looked at CC line of subwoofers (and other stores and lines) and liked what I heard. The Velodynes disappeared better than any other subwoofers (equal to the other Velodynes) and was actually tighter than the CT120. Useful bass in room is about down to 25 Hz. The price was extremely reasonable at cost (benefit if you worked at CC): $251.72! The CT80 were about $190 and the CT120 was about $310. The sound (Tom summed it up pretty well) was much better than the other subs. Although I have to say that the JBL PSW1200 sub which was rated fairly well in a A/V magazine was probably the worst. Upper bass harmonics were coming out of this sub. You can probably hear most of the frequency range in that sub; and you could only low pass at the lowest 90Hz! Stuff is coming out of there that really shouldn't. Anyways, I have my sub set at 42 Hz low pass and volume at 4. This gave me, so far, the best transiton between the B&Ws and the Velodyne. I could write on and on, telling you how good this subwoofer is for the price. My only complaint is that the sub's speaker line is via spring clips (but binding posts on the CT120) and it took a lot of modification to get my Kimble Kables into the slots.

Strength:

loud, clean and tight unbleavable for a 10 sub. What is in that box.

Weakness:

heave a big box for such a little sub

My Infinity BU120 12’ in sub went on me about a week ago and it was not longer under warranty. It was like loosing one of the Family. I got it as a floor model for $360.00. Well the cost saving was not worth it when I was startled 2:00 a.m. by a large rumbling in the night. I figured the boogieman was after me. Sleepy, startled I heard such a clatter, I jump out of my bed to see what was a matter. When I made it to the living room I realized it was my sub that had blown. (No there was not a Jolly man with a red suite) Well, this time I figured that I would lighten up on my pockets and get a better sub. So I went on the net and read about a few subs; however, I did not want to spend the money to get the B&W ASW 1000 which is about $700.00 dollars that I wanted and would go good with the rest of my B&W speakers I have with my home theater; however, wanted to get a good speaker maker at a good price so I looked around and Velodyne, M&K and Polk came to name. So I looked at a few of the local merchants because I could not wait for mail order even I had to pay a little more for a speaker. Surprised to see that Circuit city carried Velodyne so I listen to a few Velodyne’s, Polk, Infinity, and DCM speakers. By Far everyone said that the Velodyne was the best name they carried and the reviews where great and my luck the Velodyne was on sale. However I was worried because the Velodine was only a 10 sub I wanted at least a 12 sub. The Polk had a sub there that was a 12 but it was 50 dollars more and did not sound much different. So I took the Veldodyne CT100 home for roughly 430 or 440. I figured that if I was going to get a good sub I was going to have to give around 500 dollars so that was plainly in my budget for something that would be part of the family. Let me tell you that 10 ‘ sub is louder, cleaner and tighter than that Infinity ever was. I though I might have been me so I looked on audio review and other peoples reviews say it all.

Strength:

WOW!!

Weakness:

Well... it could go to 16hz and make me sick

This is a great sub. I paid so little and got so much. This guy really can shake the walls. The helicopter sceen in the matrix is an eviction notice waiting to happen. I have listened to many subs, even more expensive ones from Velodine, and believe me... this is a great bargin. You can get better subs.. but only if you spend a grand or more. For a great bang for the buck sub, you can't go wrong with this one.

Weakness:

heavy co*ck sucker to move around.

got rid of my peice of sh*t JBL-PSWD-15 which died one me and got the velo due to its raveing reviews here.
There is no contest between the jbl and the velo the velodyne blows away the jbl.
It has deeper louder smoother cleaner bass then the jbl.
It's hard to think that its only a 10" that does all of this.
In the near future i'm going to pick up another one of these subs for a back sub or a left & right sub combo.
Sorry for my grammer i just got home an hour ago with the unit and i'm still too happy.
I will write another review to fill in the story within the next week or two.
GREAT JOB VELODYNE PAT YOUR SELF ON THE BACK

Strength:

This sub offers A LOT of bass in a good size room It was very easy to place and adjust You can't beat the bass for the buck on this sub

Weakness:

For the price NONE at all

I did a lot of shopping and comparison on subwoofers in the market (JBL,M&K,Klipsch and etc.) I picked up a new Denon receiver and the Bose AM10 system from a friend at about half of the retail cost. The Bose are great for highs but have NO real bass at all, in fact the Bose sub is worthless in my opinion. When people say "All highs and NO lows must be Bose" believe it! Because I got such a deal I figured a few hundred or so more for a powered sub was not going to break the bank and would solve my problem. I visited the audio stores and listened to as many as I could. Just a side note: I noticed the audio stores had the subs power turned all the way to max every time they were showing them to me. When I turned them down and adjusted them myself the bass was still present but real weak on most. I was sold on going with the Klipsch KSW12. It seemed to put out some decent bass and was affordable. A buddy who is also shopping encouraged me to look into the Velodyne before I bought the Klipsch. I called around and found one store with the Velodyne in stock. Too bad they didn't have it hooked up for me to hear. They ranted and raved on its performance though. After reading these reviews and calling some other audio stores I found that the Velodyne CT100 got some really strong praise. I decided it couldn't be much worse than the Klipsch and ordered it without ever hearing it. I was a little worried about that but figured how could so many people be wrong. I got it 2 nights ago and set it up with my system. I bought some real expensive sub cable but, based upon my experience with car audio subs the cables can make or break the sound. All I can say is that this sub is absolutely outstanding ! Easy setup, a lot of control, and tight pounding room filling bass at a great price. I wasted a lot of time with some of the other subs I actually considered. This sub sounds great with DVD or music. Most of the others sounded good with DVD but not music. Hopefully, I can spare someone else the time I wasted shopping by submitting this review. This is a fantastic piece of equipment and deserves the high reviews it has been getting.
