Strength:

Excellent sound, remote and good AV's.

Weakness:

After a year, the picture seems to have lines on the left and right sides of the screen. Gets worse over time.

First, let me say that I love this TV. It was a great purchase for the money, and I've got a lot of use out of it.

It's been a year since I purchased it, but now I seem to have small lines on the left and right sides of my screen on all pictures. Not enough to ruin the look, but when you notice it, it doesn't go away. And it's getting worse. I am convinced that it is becuase of the speakers running along the side of the tv.

Anyway, I'm taking it in for repair next week (luckilly my year warrenty hasn't run out yet)

I'll post another review when I find out what the scoops is!

Weakness:

glare

At the recommendation of a friend and this site, I recently bought the D series 27" 201 model and have been very impressed with the overall quality of this television for the price. Both videotapes and DVDs look and sound amazing. My only regret is that that I didn't have enough cash at the time to upgrade to a larger set. I would recommend the set to anyone who wants a lot of bang for the buck. The only drawback is glare which I've noticed has been mentioned in previous listings on this site. If you plan on doing a lot of viewing with a moderate to large amount of ambient light, it may not be the right set for you.

Strength:

Excellent Picture, Component Inputs, Good Stock Speakers, Price

Weakness:

Glare

After reading the advice here I went ahead and bought this beast at the local circuit city. I actually purchased the 201 model, but I think it is exactly the same thing. As far as the picture quality goes, it is excellent. The WEGA 27 I had before was also excellent, but not worth the the extra money at all. As mentioned, the only real problem is the glare. I'm usually at school during the day so I guess it doesn't matter. I would highly reccomend this TV for the money.

Strength:

color, component & av inputs, speakers

Weakness:

slightly grainy picture detail

TV provides very strong value.

Speakers are excellent, for a TV. (Puts comparable Sony and Panasonic products to shame; only Toshiba's V51 can compete.)

Color reproduction is also excellent: brighter colors than from Sony, without the strong reds found on Toshiba TVs. Seems equal to the nice color provided by Panasonic models.

The picture has slightly more grain (less detail) than Sony and Panasonic models. This seems most noticable with poor video sources. With high quality video sources like DVD, the picture is excellent.

Given the reasonable price, I have to give it 5 stars, as best of class.

Strength:

Component input, Excellent sound(surround and BBE), functions

Weakness:

Color just isn't right, simple remote

This set sounds AWESOME! The BBE and surround sound really
add clarity if you don't use a receiver. Using a receiver and DVD, the component input results in excellent picture and sound.

My complaints are that the color just doesn't look right. It has a save-able color setting, but I just couldn't get it right. I couldn't get the color right in the showroom either. Oh well...it is close enough.

The remote is easy to program and use as a universal, but I feel like I"m going to break it too easy....

But overall the TV is very good!

Strength:

Component video input

Weakness:

composite video input and tuner could be better

After dropping our 27" Sony Trinitron off the back of a truck while moving to our new house, I was in the market for a replacement television. I had been wanting to get a DVD player for a while and knew that whatever I got had to have S-Video to make it worthwhile. I was looking through the Crutchfield catalog I got in the mail and saw the JVC D-Series televisions and saw that they had component inputs. For the price, it sounded like a good deal so I went down to Circuit City and had a look.

The picture was adequate and since it was such a good price compared to the others, I bought it. The picture quality was average, but I guess I couldn't complain. Then I bought my Sony DVP-S530D DVD player (with component video inputs) and used the Video Essentials disc to calibrate the picture. It took me about half an hour to get it set right, and after getting used to the new settings, the picture was very much improved.

I tested several DVDs and was amazed at how reaslistic the picture was. Using the video inputs for the VCR, I noticed that the blank screen wasn't black, but had a bit of a tinge to it making it look like the brightness was too high (it wasn't). On the left edge of the screen, there was a dark line, which was rather odd. But I hardly ever use my VCR anymore, so it's not a big deal. The tuner is rather weak when using an antenna too.

Other than that, it's a terrific value and the only thing I regret is that I don't have space for a bigger one.

Strength:

Component video inputs, without all the other features you don't need to jack up the price.

Weakness:

Universal remote isn't really universal. It only controls an additional VCR.

I researched many 27 inch sets, including the sony wega, sony V and S series, and panasonic superflat. I decided to save my money and get the JVC, since it has the component inputs I wanted and a great picture at the same price as the sony entry level v series. You could almost buy two of these sets for the price of the wega. After 3 months I am very happy with the decision. I set it up using the Avia Home Theatre DVD and love the picture.

Strength:

Picture Quality, Sound, Features, Value for Money

Weakness:

Hyperscan, Some Glare

Excellent value for the money! I looked around a bit
before bying the AV27D201 model. At the price I paid
(less than $400) I did not find a better value for the money. Granted, with another $60 to $100 you can buy a better set from Sony, Panasonic or even JVC, but an additional 20%-25% is not a marginal step-up for any consumer product.

The picture quality is high, with the reproduction of colors being accurate and vivid. The side-mounted, front-firing speakers are exceptional (I prefer side-mounted speakers). The screen is not as flat as Sony's tubes and there is some glare, but what I'm looking for in a TV set at this price range is quality, picture, I/O connectivity and value for money, and JVC offered the best combination.

Hyperscan is pretty much a useless feature, but it seems that JVC think it's a good marketing (selling) point.

I have owned JVC consumer products for many years now and I am satisfied with their product quality. I would choose a JVC product anytime over Panasonic or Toshiba, where their quality is more product specific than uniform.

Weakness:

GLARE DURING THE DAY, MOIRE PROBLEMS FROM THE SIDES, JVC MANUFACTURING

(review for JVC-D201)
This tv provides a good picture when playing dvd movies, but I've noticed that for widescreen movies(which pretty much 99% of dvds are) the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen are not straight, they look a bit wavy on the sides, I consider that annoying, also straight lines on sides of the screen(noticable during stock qutes etc..) are also curving. Third are the moire problems that were really noticable on my first set, and not as noticable on my second but they are still there and that annoys me. Fourth is that this is my second set and besides all the problems mentioned before, this sets platic cover in deformed, on the bottom the plastic curves and the tv doesn't stand straight, it rocks from front to back. Maybe it's just me, being unlucky with two lemons, but i looked closely at the store display model and noticed the moire problem on the sides of the screen.
Note to previous reviewer, you did not get a good deal, I got my set for $369.81(includes tax), and i still feel that I did not get a good deal.

The Panasonic superflat i had before(which i bought for $422.84(including tax) had a much better picture quality from the cable tuner, and a much, much better (and a perfectly flat)picture using the dvd with svideo in, but that tv had a problem of being half an inch croocked to the side and the model was all sold out when i wanted to exchange it for a diffrent one so I got the Jvc.

If you can find this tv with no problems, and you are looking for component inputs(that won't give you any visible improvement over svideo on this set)and lots of inputs, then buy it. I will use my tv for the next 29 days wait for tv prices to come down a bit more and buy myself a diffrent tv, hopefully one with no problems.
