Strength:

Brilliant, crisp, picture. Only 27" set with 2 component inputs.

Weakness:

Not the easiest setup I've ever seen. As others have stated, this set is pretty heavy.

I love this TV. I purchased it after reading review after review that praised the JVC l'Art line of televisions. Many have said that they feel this set is superior to the VVegas. I was considering buying the Sony VVega KV27V17 which is also a really nice TV. What proved to be the tiebreaker though was the second set of component inputs. Unless you're a video gamer this probably would'nt matter but I am, so it was important to me.

I upgraded from an 8 yr. old Magnavox 27" that was still performing pretty good considering its age. But when I popped in a DVD played on the JVC my jaw just about hit the floor. Even more striking was my Playstation 2 hooked up with Monster component video cable. I popped in a game that I bought recently and I swear it did not even look like the same game. I will never watch a DVD or play a game without being hooked up through component.

If you're someone who has decided to upgrade your TV but can't quite make the leap to HDTV this set is a great option. I really wanted a Hi-Def set but I feel that it is just too early to jump on that bandwagon. I have been burned too many times by being an "early adopter". I'm going to wait until the price of not only the TV's but also the set top boxes come down to earth. I also need more than 15 hrs. a week of HDTV programming to convince me to spend over 2 grand!! So for now I am thrilled with my new JVC AV27F802. Highly recommended.

Strength:

Amazing picture - great reception

Weakness:

My TV died after 28 days!!!! The dealer stated that the chances of that happening were one in a million. Has that happened to anyone else?

Never want to leave my house - the picture is incredible! I chose this TV over a larger rounded screen picture because of the incredible quality. I just hope this 2nd TV lasts longer than the first one!!!

Strength:

Tuner, lots of video inputs, advanced comb filter.

Weakness:

Sound, hard to get good color adjustment.

I purchased this set after returning the Sony KV17 due to color uniformity problems. My initial impressions of the JVC were good, nice picture & very low noise on analog cable channels compared to the Sony's I had. After using it for several weeks the sets limitations bothered me too much. Back to Sears it went :(. Too bad, I had really wanted to like this TV after all the positive reviews.

The first problem was the sound. Very thin, no Bass compared to the Sony sets I've had. Sounded poor unless I turned on the BBE enhancement. This made the sound acceptable but then I got a buzzing out of the speakers at moderate listening levels. Unless you route this TV's sound thru a stereo or home theater system you will not like it very much.

The picture is softer and subdued compared to Sony's. Some say this set produces a very natural color but I just couldn't get it adjusted to my satisfaction. The colors are definatly not as vibrant as other manufacturers sets. To me it seemed kind of dull & lifeless compared to what I was used to. Softer picture than the Sony's, less detailed. This is appealing to some, I tend to like a more detailed, sharper look. I also couldn't get flesh-tones to look good no matter how I adjusted the controls. Most of the time faces looked washed out, when I adjusted the contrast & brightness to make them look acceptable the rest of the picture looked too dark, loss of details in shadows, etc.

This set is expensive for a 27" model, for the price I think the sound should definatly be better. The picture is really kind of subjective & may appeal to some. The contrast problems might have been bad low level adjustments at the factory on the particular set I had, but I really didn't want to take that chance on another one. The poor sound really clinched the return. For what you get the regular price on this is expensive.

Strength:

Sharp, high value, great color, tons of inputs

Weakness:

Sound is only fair.

It's all been said. This is a great TV at a great price. I have always had a problem with the color on TV but this set does a great job. The "theater" setting warms things up even more. I liked the set so much, I got a second one (the 702) for another room.

Strength:

Picture Quality, Geometry, good looks

Weakness:

Sound-its a joke

After reading up on flat screen CRT TV's, I took the plunge and got the Wega KV-27FV17. I thought I would be lucky and get one without the geometry, color distortions etc. I was wrong and sure enough even after the service guy coming 2 days after to adjust my TV it still had unacceptable geometry, so back it went. I got my money back and went to PC Richards and saw the JVC, I imediately noticed that the Color on this set trounched the Sony. The Jets game was on and the color of their Uniforms was dead on. I wound up getting the TV for 700 bucks out the door WITH a two year warranty extension with in home service. How can one beat THAT?!!! This is my first TV that hasnt been a hand me down from the parents. I am now going to get a DVD player in the upcoming month once i get the cash- I am leaning towards the Panisonic RV31 something or other. I don't need Progscan so I htink the Panasonic will be fine. I recomend the TV without reservation if you dont need a tv for the sound but wnat a great picture, and if you can get a price like i did, then its probably one of the the best tv's that is 27 inch on the market

Strength:

Great picture quality, 2 component inputs, Flat screen

Weakness:

remote, av compulink doesn't work with my JVC receiver

I actually bought the 32 inch model AV-32F802 but it's not listed as a product yet so I thought I would write a review here since it's the same model only bigger. The best advice I can give you is search for the best deal online, print it out and take it with you to Sears. They matched the online offer and i got 0%finacing for 9 months then a few days after I purchased it I called back and they gave me an additional 10% off the matched price. The guy who sold it to me was very helpful and told me how to do this. The TV was special ordered and delivered within the week. Don't try and move this tv by yourself get it delivered, it almost 150lbs and very bulky.

It is the crowning touch to a great system. I also have a JVC receiver (8000-VBK), a JVC DVD (XV-D701), and a JVC S-vhs vcr (u4800). The picture quality is amazing, although not HDTV but it looks just like it using the component input from the DVD player. The flat screen makes all the diffence, if you're thinking about D-model vs the F-model, spend the extra and go flat it's well worth it. Can't really comment on the sound since I use my receiver and bose speakers for that. the standard, theather and choice video options are also nice touches, the menu system is pretty intuitive as well. Not crazy about the remote for audio purposes. It works well with the other JVC video devices but does not have any features available for my jvc receiver, no way to switch inputs on the receiver. The PIP is a nice feature and the remote has bunch of buttons devoted to it on the remote, not worth the extra$ though, I rarely use it. Also the av-compulink feature doesn't turn off the TV when I turn off the receiver and vice-versa. Overall, I very impressed with the quality, features and price of my jvc system. Sony has nothing on jvc!

Strength:

Clarity, Inputs, Ease of Use, Price, No scan lines visable

Weakness:

Not HDTV

I was really used to a Sony 27inch TV from 1993 and it was the bomb back then. It was valued around $700 but I bought the floor model for only $400 I always noticed a funny thing about the TV though. It's sides would bend in a bit on images. This was apparent during the THX intro but I figured, oh well....$400 for a 27 inch back then. The Sony is still as good as new though almost 9 years later.

I am basically reviewing the Flat 27 inch 702 model not the 802 because I was told there's 1 difference...PIP and I could care less about that. I admit 2 component video inputs is nice but I'm sure there's a component video switcher out there somewhere if I ever have 2 component sources.

As the cable guy installed the cable I was getting excited, so the minute he was done I hit the ON button to see how great this new TV was. Well....I was pretty amazed that even normal cable was sharp and clear. The colors are much more vibrant and robust without any bleeding what-so-ever.

It also has an awesome DVD/Component video picture. DVD movies have a crisp, film like quality that normal TV's do not have. The one thing that really stands out are letters and words. They almost look computer like, they are that easy to read. Film credits used to be hard to read, even with s-video, well not now. Colors with DVD are very seperate and vibrant. Red's are so lifelike it almost makes me think the movie makers are putting more red in the movie, but that can't be. Not every movie can be symbolic, sure a few are, but it's so apparent now that it looks like EVERY movie is putting more color into their movies.

I barely use the speakers but they do a normal job of what TV speakers do. They obviously have no bass but they are fuller sounding than most TV's I have heard. The surround sound feature was actually a bit more obvious on my older Sony but almost a bit too much. The JVC is best used as a monitor in a Home Theater application where you have 5 other speakers and a sub to handle the audio.

Tv's are good at one thing.....Video....They cannot logically give you bass or really high end sound unless you get a huge widescreen TV with subs underneath the cabinet as I have seen some Sony's.

If you want to save some cash, go with the 702's because PIP/1 extra component video are about the only differences.
Peace out!

Strength:

everything

Weakness:

heavy, remote could be better (number keys too small)

This got to be the best TV in this price class, period. Compared the Sony and Pansonic TVs I've owned, this set produces by far the most natural colors. The screen is very flat and has a good contrast.
The only sad thing is the NTSC system that we are stuck with. Sadly, almost every generic PAL TV costing half the price produces better colors and sharper images. But my compliments to JVC, they did the very best out of the situation. Especially compared to Sony, scan lines are less visible and colors are more natural, most prominent when comparing skin tones. Most Sony produce pig-like purple skin tones instead of natural tones (this is an NTSC problem, by the way, but obviously JVC found a way to improve it).

Strength:

Excellent picture, color correctness, white balance.

Weakness:

Only slightly cheaper than Sony, less aesthetically pleasing than Wega.

I haven't actually received my T.V. yet, but I've spent a lot of time comparing the Sony Wega 27 FV17 and the JVC F802. Thought I would provide some additional info for someone in the same shoe as me. I had the chance to compare the Sony and the JVC right next to each other, with the same signal.

For sharpness, I would have to say Sony has a slightly sharper image, especially if you're looking at words that's displayed on the screen. However, if you don't compare the two, you won't be able to tell the difference. The sharpness will give picture a better 3-D feel to it. However, I find the color to be much better with the JVC, this is especially true with contrasting color. If you look at the Black and White color on the JVC, you can see this is almost exact. For Sony, the White always have a tinge of pink color to it. For other picture, the JVC provides a more correct color.

One of the biggest problem I find out about the Sony is the "line" on both side of the screen. I believe this is due to the fact that the Sony tube is not perfectly flat, thereby creating some distortion/refraction giving you this horizontal line that will be very apparent if you have a picture that has lighter color.. you will always see if if you have white color on the screen. When I saw that, there's no way I would pay more for a Sony. While it maybe a little sharper, but this "line" will be annoying if you ever start noticing it. Interestingly, all the Sony models have the same problem!

So, overall, I would have to say JVC has a better picture. However, Sony does look more solidly built and has a better menu!
