Strength:

Picture, flat screen, color, built in degauser

Weakness:

minor bending of geometry, holding black level, no composite in

Well, Ive heard good and bad about this, but I am leaning toward good. Ive put this tv through the video essential test, and with some of the test patterns I have noticed the geometric distortions. This is the second tv I've had, the first came with a damaged picture tube, (the rep at Circuit City said it was a degauss problem *idiot*) the first one I had, had a great amount of distortion. The one I have now is alot better. I tried watching tennis and have no complaints. I just notice around the corners, lines will bow somewhat. Comparing this to a normal tv, which always has a bow completely across the screen since the screen is not flat this flaw doesnt not bother me to much. Correct me if I'm wrong but Ive been told the tube is pretty much the same as with the normal curved sony, and is the reason for the distortion, since the beam is not perpendicular to the screen at all times. The one qualm I have is that black level is not held very good. Im having a tech look at that tomorrow. It should be better for a tv of this price. Over all, when watching movies, and that is all I do with this TV, i couldnt go for a regular curved screen. I payed 700 for this, and probably wouldnt have got it for the retail 850, i think. Oh and ppl, that loud noise you hear when you turn it on, that is just a built in degauser, and from what I hear a very good one.

Overall It is a very good TV. I just hope Sony can fix the problems with it in the new generation. Id wait, but I probably wont be able to afford one, so Ill keep this one.

I bought this television at the beginning of September, and I must admit that I was skeptical because of all the poor reports regarding Wegas that have been circulating in newsgroups.
Well, after spending $1500CAN on this television, I can't help but feel a little short changed. My biggest complaint about this television is that lines weren't straight. It wasn't noticable with regular broadcasts, but anything that had straight lines in it was just unbearable. Watching tennis was horrible as the lines would bend as the camera panned. I know that I could have complained and probably had a Sony tech come in and take a look, but the people I talked to at Sony gave me some bull about my set being within specified limitations. Blah.

Other qualms I have are the lack of component inputs, and the poorly placed second SVHS input on the front panel. It would also be nice if all the main remote keys were backlit vs. just glow-in-the-dark.

After spending this amount of money on a television, almost $400 more than any other 27", I expected a television close to perfect. The set went back after 2 weeks... I will admit though that ignoring the bowing I observed, the picture was amazing. Still, I must reiterate that I expected more for my money. I think that I'm going to wait for the Samsung Tantus Pure Flat 27" set due out this month. It has everything the Wega has, but it is also capable of displaying 480p (then I'll just need a progressive scan DVD player!) and has component inputs. Maybe this set will meet my expectations.

To anyone else thinking of buying a 27" Wega, I would recommend just saving the money and buying a Panasonic Superflat.

Strength:

Vivid picture

Weakness:

Slow tuner, lound noise when you turn it on

I got my first unit and within the first four days it went defective. Got another unit and it seems to work fine now.

This is the first tv with a PIP that I've used and I think the PIP is sorta weak. You can't swap between Ant and cable and I don't think you can do that with other video modes as well.

When channel flipping, the tuner seems to take its time and the picture goes to black before the new channel appears. Very annoying since I can't flip channels quickly and it flickers on and off when I try to.

Another thing is that when I turn the unit on, it makes a loud noise. It's just the little things that bug me.

Strength:

Great Picture/Colors...True Flat screen; Great with DVDs

Weakness:

Bit on the heavy side

Have had the TV for about a month and have to say that once I've gotten used to the high quality of the picture that Wegas produce is when I REALLY notice how bad other TVs are... (Not necessarily bad, but way below in quality). It's perfect for watching my DVDs; the default video settings that the TV has (Standard, Movie, Sports, Vivid) needed just a tad bit of tweaking, but was very good as is. Not sure why a few people complain about the s-video in front, but it's perfect for all my videogames as well as for videocameras (I wouldn't want to move the TV around each time I felt like plugging in a Dreamcast, way too heavy). Would have liked component, but after seeing how the fs12 sacrifices a s-video input for it, I really don't mind. Besides that, the TV design itself is cool, giving it an appearence that it's bigger than 27. Overall, I'm very happy with the purchase...800 bucks including the stand...

Strength:

Picture quality, sound, PIP

Weakness:

No Component Video Inputs, too wide and it is a little pricy but worth it!

I can't get over it not having a component input. AH! Other then that I really have no complaints. Oh yes there is... It's to damn wide, if it was the standard width I would have been able to fit a 32" Wega (w/ component too!).

Just picked up this model and what a joy. Picture quality is great (after a little tweaking of the color controls, out of box too bright and blue). Waiting on my DVD and Video Essentials to calibrate the system. This Sony replaces a JVC 32D800 I had for 2 weeks. What a bad (I could use a lot stronger words) TV (I will post a 1 star review for that TV later). The only thing missing from the Sony is component inputs. The KV-32fv15 had the inputs but was twicew as expensive ($1399) I got the Sony at Sears (the only place that had it is stock and I had a New Home Buyers Disc.) of $729.00. I would like to give the TV 4.5 stars, taking off .5 stars for no component inputs but you can not give half stars So I will give the TV 5 stars.

Price

I've had this TV for a few days now, and have to say that I am very impressed with it.

This site has been great for helping me sort out the pluses & negatives of the Sony Wega. I must say though, I almost didn't buy the Sony due to several negative comments about bad geometry, warping / edge dis-coloration, inability to hold black level.

I have not encountered any of these problems.

Fact is, every store I went to that had the Wegas on display with a DVD demo disc...well, there was just no comparison.

One of the problems inherent with all chat / review forums is that those people who have had bad experiences (maybe 5 to 10% max in reality) tend to be the most vocal...which can taint the overall consumer opinion poll.

When I first setup the TV, its refresh rate was very noticable...a slow horizontal banding crept down the screen. This was at first alarming. THEN... I changed a few more settings...

...I changed picture quality from Medium to High, set to NTSC Standard, turned brightness up, sharpness down, and color-correct off...

...and voila, perfect picture!

DVDs are absolutely stunning, with an S-Video hook-up to the DVD drive in my computer.

Even basic cable channels look good. Yah, there is one channel where the reception is less than stellar...but that same channel never tuned in well on my old TV either. Bottom line, you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. If your cable reception sucks, no TV in the world can fully remedy that! : )

This TV costs a pretty penny, but I don't regret my purchase at all.

Thanx again to all those who contributed reviews. Getting several thoughful, informed opinions really helped me reach a final decision.

the channel changing can be a little crazy.

I just love everything about it. Great picture espcially with DVD. I just love it!!!!! Hey for just less than $600 I am not stupid to jump on that.....:)
I could have gotten a 2000 36xbr but I am not into really big screens and plus the bigger the tv the more my eyes hurt.

Strength:

Picture quality is the best advantage of this product.

Weakness:

Price is quite a bit higher than other brand models.

The last time I bought a TV was in 1991 and didn't really feel the need to get a new one until I saw this particular model.

The price of the unit is quite high, but it is well worth it.

I was ready to pay for the full retail price at a local store when I realized I probably should check the outlet store. It is true that the unit is refurbished, but you couldn't really argue with $250 saving! The unit works just like new with same picture quality.
